Chapter 49

“What have you figured?” Tang Xuhai asked when he saw Fu Shiwu remain silent.

“Hm.” Fu Shiwu raised his head to look back at him and said with a serious expression: “I’m thinking that with an ox this big, how many days would it take to finish eating it?”

Hearing his words, the whole group fell into utter silence.

Aren’t you digressing a bit too fast?!

Tang Xuhai coughed dryly: “What you’re thinking makes sense. Hunting on the road is also one of our plans. This ox is too big and it won’t be easy to preserve its meat in such hot weather.”

Tang Xuhai quickly turned the topic to a serious side to cover up Fu Shiwu’s thinking that was way out of the box.

Wen Zhaoming instantly played along: “But it’s too big to be wasted here. We can take some meat from its back and four limbs, then I’ll use my fire power to dry it as much as possible. In that way, it can be stored for longer.”

“Okay!” Hollande agreed with this idea: “I’ve been eating buns and vegetables for too long! I haven’t touched any meat for two months. In any case, this is meat from a special ability ox, we must take away as much as possible!”

Huo Enting also said: “The energy from meat is much higher than that of grains and vegetables. With dried meat taken from this ox, at least we won’t have to worry about food for some time.”

Tang Xuhai turned to face Miao Jia: “You go and take a look at the nearest alien wave. How long do we have until we come into contact with them?”

“Yes!” Miao Jia replied enthusiastically and slowly ran back to the modified car. Meat! We’ve got meat!!!

Based on Miao Jia’s calculations, they would encounter the alien wave in fourteen hours.

After Fu Shiwu, Tang Xuhai and Wen Zhaoming discussed, they decided to set aside four hours to deal with the ox.

Wen Zhaoming took the other people and began to take the carcass apart, then process it into dried meat. Born in a country whose diet consisted mainly of meat, Hollande proactively took on the important task of cutting up the meat, while several other people worked with Wen Zhaoming to drive the moisture away from it. After all, Wen Zhaoming had difficulty walking and couldn’t move around much.

Tang Xuhai took Fu Shiwu and Miao Jia to a side to analyse the map and study the location where they would face the alien wave.

Tang Xuhai earnestly evaluated the terrains and the roads while silently calculating their next moves. Fu Shiwu couldn’t understand the real-time map much. The shades of green denoted the different vegetations on land. A darker shade of green likely indicated mountain tops, while a lighter one probably indicated slopes. There were particularly thin yellow lines that might be roads. Fu Shiwu had no knowledge about how to judge the terrains and battle sites by looking at these.

He couldn’t help but looked at Tang Xuhai with admiration. It was better to leave this kind of thing to the professionals.

Tang Xuhai intently looked at the map, pointed to a place and said: “Miao Jia, zoom in on this place for me.”

Miao Jia enlarged the place Tang Xuhai pointed to.

“This place should work.” Tang Xuhai nodded and said: “Be sure to rush to this place before coming into contact with the alien wave.”

“Is it a mountain top?” Fu Shiwu asked with uncertainty.

“Uhm.” Tang Xuhai said: “It’s advantageous for defence and disadvantageous for attack. Even if we have to face a huge wave of aliens, there’s only enough space for twenty aliens to stand in front of us at the same time. This is good for us.”

Fu Shiwu silently calculated the ratio. With 20 to 11, their odds of winning were far greater.

Following their effort of tidying up the ox, everyone had a meal of meat stew until all of them were full and satisfied.

After mutating and developing a special ability, the giant ox’s meat quality apparently became superb. It tasted so good that even Huo Enting, a young master born in an upper-class family, had to nod over and over and couldn’t stop complimenting.

As the sky gradually darkened, everyone sped up and packed up all the meat, leaving behind only its organs and huge head. No one knew if these left-overs would be useful for whatever creature that came later.

Except for the SUV, the other cars struggled to get through the sand, and all three got back on the road again.

Going down the slope where the giant ox appeared, they saw a deadly silent village.

Fu Shiwu looked at a deserted village and guessed that the ox was perhaps raised in this place. He had no idea how the cow escaped from those aliens.

“How are you feeling?” Tang Xuhai asked him.

“?” Fu Shiwu looked at him with bafflement. With his eyes still steadily fixed at the front, Tang Xuhai said: “The state that you got in today, is it the same as the state you were in back at the bomb shelter?”

“Uhm.” Fu Shi Noon nodded: “And it feels much clearer than before.”

“Is there still a feeling of complete exhaustion?”

“No.” Fu Shiwu said affirmatively: “I don’t think it drains a lot of energy.”

Tang Xuhai nodded with a blank expression, but his heart was shaking inside.

The scene where Fu Shiwu totally lost his energy when he showed this ‘unique ability’ for the first time was still vivid before Tang Xuhai’s eyes. But now, Fu Shiwu had an easy time manipulating this ability.

After pondering a few thoughts, Tang Xuhai felt that Fu Shiwu’s ability had only been applied to actual combat three times, but each time, he displayed significant improvement.

Tang Xuhai looked at Fu Shiwu with an expression that was difficult to read. It seems that this guy is a combat type. The more he was put under the pressure of real battles, the more explosive he would become.

Tang Xuhai squeezed the steering wheel with both hands. He couldn’t lose to this guy, and he had to work hard to tap on the combat power of his metal-type ability!

As the day slowly turned into night, everyone’s emotion slowly tensed up. The sky veil once again was moving above them, its faint crimson shade replacing the deep black night.

Having no other choice, Tang Xuhai turned on the car’s headlights.

Nighttime was when the sky veil cast those aliens onto Earth. Until now, humanity still didn’t know exactly what the sky veil was, but one thing was clear: this sky veil was definitely an existence beyond their imagination and their reality.

It was possible that it never belonged to this world.

Most thought that this was an invasion of Earth by aliens, but the signs displayed so far were nothing like a high-tech war people used to have in their imagination.

Although the aliens were very strong and would even evolve over time, they didn’t show any particular extent of civilization. The aliens might be social creatures, but they hadn’t carried out any extremely effective attack till now. This was great for humans, but then, this meant that these aliens didn’t have the means to win over the technology of Earth.

The many contradictions were puzzling.

“Be careful!” Fu Shiwu cried out.

Tang Xuhai stared at the alien that was dazzled by the strong light of the headlights, gritted his teeth and stepped on the pedal. With a loud roar, the off-road vehicle slammed into the alien and sent it flying off!

Fu Shiwu’s heart almost jumped out of his throat, then he looked at Tang Xuhai’s cold face in utter astonishment. He really didn’t expect Tang Xuhai to do it so directly and crudely.

“Puff!” Fu Shiwu lowered his head and laughed.

“What are you laughing at?” Tang Xuhai looked at him in surprise.

Fu Shiwu shook his head: “No, I just thought we’d had to stop the car to deal with it. I didn’t expect you to just bang into it like this.” This style really fit Tang Xuhai’s personality.

Tang Xuhai glared at him and said unhappily: “Doesn’t it cost fuel to stop the car and start again? It also wastes oil to keep the engine on.”

As Fu Shiwu let out another light laugh, Miao Jia came in between the two of them and said in surprise: “Hai ge, I didn’t expect you to do things so simply.”

“Go go go!” Tang Xuhai patted him away.

Along the way, they met several aliens. Some happened to fall on either side of the road, while some chased after the cars after seeing the lights. The car in front continued to give the same treatment it gave to the first alien, hitting all these creatures to death with its reinforced bumper. The alien bones weren’t made of steel like Tang Xuhai, so they were all brutally crushed under the impact. Only one managed to escape.

As for those that chased after them from behind, Fu Shiwu just shot them down through the car window.

Before they encountered the alien wave, the four cars finally arrived at the place designated by Tang Xuhai.

There was still some time before dawn, so they arranged three cars into a circular fortification and took turns to rest.

Fu Shiwu insisted that Tang Xuhai got some sleep first, while he watched the place together with Hollande.

Tang Xuhai also didn’t insist otherwise. He opened the sleeping bag and fell asleep after a short moment.

Fu Shiwu sat down next to the burning bonfire. The temperature dropped sharply in the second half of the night, and coupled with the humidity on the mountain, it wasn’t ideal to not put on a fire.

To Fu Shiwu, Hollande was pretty much still a stranger. After spending some time with Tang Xuhai, Wen Zhaoming and Fu Shiwu, who seemed to be a rather distant man, Hollande had grown accustomed to his silence.

Hollande was a handsome guy with brown hair and grey eyes. He truly admired Fu Shiwu’s marksmanship and wanted to talk, but Fu Shiwu only responded here and there.

After a while, Hollande became frustrated and took out his crossbow to fiddle with it.

Fu Shiwu glanced at it and let out a sound of surprise.

“What’s wrong?” Hollande’s eyes lit up.

“This crossbow…” Fu Shiwu said with some doubts: “I seem to have seen it.”

A non-slip rubber pad was wrapped around the crossbow’s grip. He had seen this colour before; it belonged to Liao Ke!

“Oh?” Hollande suspiciously looked at the crossbow then said to Fu Shiwu: “You may have seen it from its original owner? This crossbow was given to me by Wang Ziping.”

“Wang Ziping?” Fu Shiwu was astounded.

“Uhm.” Seeing that Fu Shiwu was finally willing to talk to him, Hollande continued gleefully: “I stayed in the warehouse where Wang Ziping was the representative. He knew that I was good at archery, so he gave this crossbow to me.”

“What about its original owner?” The words came out of Fu Shiwu’s lips before he was aware of them.

He still remembered that Liao Ke was very cautious; he wouldn’t give his personal weapon to someone else.

“I don’t know.” Hollande shook his head and said hesitantly: “Maybe he’s dead?”

Feel kinda bad for Liao Ke; there’s definitely not a good ending there. Fu Shiwu is so awesome~
