Chapter 12
Even if Wang Ziping couldnโt pull Tang Xuhai into his car, he didn’t plan to just give up Tang Xuhai, a man with such prominent strength.
Wang Ziping had his family in the car. Compared with going alone, clearly going in groups would give them better odds of surviving an encounter with the aliens. After observing the past few days, he told Liao Ke that around them were mostly young adults, middle-aged folks and families who had someone they wanted to protect. Facing the threat of these aliens and knowing now that the army was stationed near the eastern suburbs, of course many people would be willing to head there to take shelter under the army.
Some people, like Wang Ziping, were driving in front of Tang Xuhai while some were behind him, trying their best to stay โunitedโ with Tang Xuhai.
It wasnโt that Tang Xuhai didn’t see other vehicles ganging up around him. Although he didn’t directly get rid of those people, he also didn’t intend to be conveniently used by them โ especially Wang Ziping.
But Wang Ziping probably hadnโt thought of this: If he travelled alone, coming across an alien might or might not be possible; but the moment a big group travelled together, it became almost inevitable!
After all, they made such a huge prey with their large number and naturally became the best target for an attack.
An alien waved its tentacles and jumped down from a tall building on the roadside, hitting the roof of the car in front!
This shocked the driver and he stepped on the brakes out of reflex.
However, this sudden stop dangerously jammed up all the cars behind. Tang Xuhai forcefully turned the steering wheel and swiftly passed over that car, but the car behind wasnโt so lucky and rammed directly into the car in front.
With this violent impact, any human would definitely be thrown off if he was standing on the car roof. But this alienโs tentacles likely had either suction cups or hooks at the tips, so it continued to stand firmly atop the car.
The door flicked open and the people in the two cars ran away hysterically. At this point, another alien rushed out from the side alley and pounced itself onto the crowd, its long tentacles quickly wrapping around a man’s neck.
“Help me!!!” The man cried out, but unfortunately, he only had an iron rod in the car, which he didn’t even bring along as everyone had jumped out of the vehicle in complete panic.
Both frightened and dismayed, the man’s companion could only look helplessly, knowing that there was nothing he could do. As he was hesitating, the alien bit off the other man’s head and charged towards him!
The alienโs tentacles allowed them to move swiftly on these streets with tall buildings, utility poles and billboards scattered at all corners, just like Tarzan in the jungle.
Wang Ziping slammed on the gas pedal. Seeing another alien appearing from behind, he made up his mind and turned the wheel, then he pushed the car that was following him to the side.
The driver stared in horror at the alien in the rearview mirror. He totally didn’t expect that Wang Ziping would suddenly push his car. In that desperate moment, he suddenly turned left and smashed into the median strip, at which moment the alien quickly ran a few steps forward and got into the car via the broken window.
Hearing the horrified scream behind him, Wang Ziping loosened up. With a sullen face, he said to his frightened family members: “Sit tight.”
Meanwhile, Tang Xuhai remained utterly composed and reacted to the car in front of them. When that car hit the strip, he slowed down. After the car next to them sped ahead in fear, Tang Xuhai turned over the next lane.
Fu Shiwu’s tightly gripped the handrail below the car window, feeling his heart almost jumping out of his throat. The sight had him so petrified that he couldnโt even scream.
Fu Shiwu watched Tang Xuhai change from his usual lazy and nonchalant appearance to a remarkably serious expression, all while his hands flexibly turning the steering wheel and pulling the gear from time to time.
Fu Shiwu had to admit that with his driving ability, it was very likely that he would reflexively step on the brakes when the first car made its sudden stop.
More aliens came over as the whole place turned into chaos. The alien that got into the other car had crawled out of the rear window and was about to jump towards them.
Tang Xuhai made a decisive call and slammed on the accelerator, then he directly banged into the rear of the other car that was blocking the road.
Under the massive impact of the crash, the creature was sent flying backwards.
Tang Xuhai then pursed his lips and knocked over the other car.
Fu Shiwu turned around to glance over. People who’ve died can’t die again, he sighed.
He grabbed the handrail with one hand and aggressively pulled the seat belt with the other hand. Tang Xuhai was now speeding up to get rid of the alien that was climbing up from behind.
“What do we do now? Itโs climbing up!!!” Fu Shiwu turned around to look and said nervously.
Tang Xuhai glanced at the rearview mirror and recognised that it was the one that he had hit just now. The alien had tentacles, so even though it was sent flying backwards, these tentacles flung back and tightly hooked into the car rear.
“This motherf**ker is really persistent!” Tang Xuhai cursed. If it was any normal animal, it would be dragged to death at such a crazy speed, but this creature could even climb up.
The alien punched on the roof of the car, but this off-road SUV was made of extremely tough materials and showed no signs of cracking, albeit it started deforming with the attack.
“What should we do, what should we do?!” Fu Shiwu stared alarmingly at the pit that was getting deeper and deeper, himself starting to ramble incoherent words.
“Be quiet!” Tang Xuhai frowned. For now, they needed to leave this block first.
The car turned into the main road that had tall buildings on both sides, then Tang Xuhai drove towards the parking lot behind these tall buildings.
“Where are you heading?” Fu Shiwu asked.
“To find a place with an open field of view. I don’t want to be surrounded by these unknowns.” Tang Xuhai looked at the tentacle hanging down from the window next to him, which carried hooks that would send a chill down anyone’s spine upon the sight.
“Fu Shiwu!” He shouted.
โYes?” Fu Shiwu had his eyes fixed on the car roof, his nerves stretched to the extreme.
“Didn’t you say that your driving is good?” Tang Xuhai stretched out one hand and pulled Fu Shiwuโs chin over so that he looked Fu Shiwu in the eyes: “I’ll jump out of the car and chase this monster away. You lean over and take the wheel, then climb here and hit the brakes, do you understand?”
โHuh?!” Fu Shiwu stared back at him in utter shock.
He understood every single word, but this surely wasnโt an easy task. I’m afraid I can’t do it!
“Catch it!” Tang Xuhai grabbed his hand and pressed it on the steering wheel. The moment he opened the door, the tentacles outside directly flew towards him. Tang Xuhai pulled out his combat knife and slashed the tentacles.
โSqueakโโโ” The alien let out a harsh cry, as though its vocal cord had been torn apart. Its tentacle was cut off!
Tang Xuhai immediately took the opportunity to jump off the car.
Although the car wasnโt going at excessively high speed, he still rolled on the ground for a while before the momentum stopped.
“Tang Xuhai!!!” Fu Shiwu screamed since he hadn’t even unfastened his seat belt! Why did you jump so fast?!!!
Fu Shiwu was about to cry. With one hand holding onto the wheel, his other hand rapidly flicked to release the seat belt. Wen Zhaoming hurried over to help him. Luckily, no dog-blood situation of a seat belt not being able to be unbuckled at the critical moment happened.
With Wen Zhaoming’s help, Fu Shiwu smoothly climbed onto the driver’s seat and slowly stepped on the brakes, but instead of coming to a full stop, he turned around and drove back.
It was getting dark and Fu Shiwu wanted to shine the car lights for Tang Xuhaiโs vision.
This parking lot was built for the grand commercial building on the main road. It was often full of vehicles during busy periods, however, since the days following the astronomical phenomenon, almost no one had returned to work and the parking lot was scattered with only a few cars.
This empty field was extremely favourable for Tang Xuhai to carry out his plan. After jumping off the car, he had pulled the alien’s grudge with him. The creature definitely despised the human who had cut off one of its tentacles.
Its other tentacle tried to twist around him.
These aliens had extraordinarily fast movements that most ordinary people wouldnโt be able to react to, but for Tang Xuhai, a man who had undergone rigorous training as a soldier, this speed could still be avoided.
And he could not not avoid it anyway, because if the hooks on those tentacles managed to tug on his body, a large piece of flesh would be gone. Fighting with these aliens could easily have him end up being skinned alive.
The alienโs tentacle swept across his chest and Tang Xuhai instantly dodged with a backward fall, then he swiftly pushed his body up and stabbed the alien with the combat knife.
The alien flipped its tentacles and ducked to one side, letting out an excruciating scream. It panted heavily and seemed horribly irritated.
Getting closer, Tang Xuhai found that only the front end of the tentacles contained those hooks. This gave him an idea.
Tang Xuhai pretended to target the alien’s left arm that had been chopped off earlier. Now that it had been severely wounded, the alien seemed particularly sensitive to pain and couldnโt help being on guard, especially on its left side, to prevent further harm. Taking advantage of this chance, Tang Xuhai grabbed the alienโs right arm from behind, twisted its waist and threw it over the shoulder. The moment the creature hit the ground, Tang Xuhai slammed the combat knife right in between its eyebrows.
As Fu Shiwu drove the car over slowly, Tang Xuhai defeated the alien with lightning speed.
Tang Xuhai pulled the knife out and the alienโs blood forcefully spurted out. As the tension had passed, Tang Xuhai’s senses came back to him and various parts of his body started sending their collapse signals.
His whole body trembled and he was almost unable to stand.
Fu Shiwu pushed the car door open and quickly came over to lift him up.
“Are you okay? Are there any injuries?” Fu Shiwu asked cautiously.
“It’s okay, thereโs nothing too serious.” Tang Xuhai brushed off Fu Shiwuโs hand, not allowing the brat to support him.
Tang Xuhai paused for a moment, then he walked towards the off-road SUV.
“Letโs go quickly, else itโll be too late.”
Knowing that Tang Xuhai had an existing wound on his leg, Fu Shiwu could now immediately notice that something wasnโt quite right: “How is your leg?”
“It’s okay!” Tang Xuhai said sternly: “You drive, letโs go first. We can talk later!”
Fu Shiwu decided to stop arguing. If Tang Xuhaiโs leg had been fine, he would never have let Fu Shiwu drive.
Tang Xuhai waited for Fu Shiwu to get in first before he slowly climbed into the car. He stabilised the left side of his body onto the seat, then seemingly pulled his right leg inside.
“What really happened to your leg?” Fu Shiwu became enraged and turned around to cast a sharp look at Tang Xuhai, his aura screaming โIf you donโt tell me, weโre not going anywhere.โ
Tang Xuhai felt infuriated yet helpless at the same time: “It’s okay. I might have twisted it a bit when I jumped down just now.”
Fu Shiwu nodded and finally started the car, completely failing to notice that his gaze seemed to have conveyed the wrong intention again.
Tang Xuhai felt downhearted because he was threatened by Fu Shiwu’s eyes.
Poor Fu Shiwu actually just wanted to express his genuine concerns.

In essence, she lives to indulge in plot-driven stories sprinkled with camaraderie and slow-burn drama-free romance, especially more so if they belong to adventure, mystery or supernatural genre. A trope that she always thirsts after: “Comrades who go through life and death together”.
I able to read the characters as seeing sea waves come and go at this point. It’s more weird reading the comments talk about as if how they already a couple… to be honest without the apocalypse happening these two type of people(mc and ml) would not interact by any mean. And i can see that they both have strong sense of male counterparts, they will be manly gay for sure. Non of that husband and wife but husbands. (Tho i bet Tang Xuhai will fight to top๐คญ)
bruh he ain’t his “wife” yet let the relationship develop like damn.
It’s always the eyes ๐ญ๐ญโ
Poor baby always misunderstood. His eyes. ๐๐
reading all the comments so far, I have to partially agree with a comment from a previous chapter about ML.
To be honest, at this point in time I don’t like him. The way he’s constantly ridiculing and stabbing at his wife leaves me with a bad aftertaste. Well, I can understand him, he’s a hedgehog and has a serious problem with his character (most probably due to his injury).
While I adore our MC, he’s just cute, but completely misunderstood by everyone.
Since I’ve read the summary as well as Ch. 0, I already know where this is going and my twisted heart is now just waiting for MC to leave him hanging!
Let this idiot suffer from being so mean to his soon-to-be-wife… But looking at my luck, MC won’t let him suffer. From my experience regarding those type of novel beginnings it will be quite the opposite….
Again, Michelle, thank you for your hard work.
Let me silently
stalkaccompany you for the coming chapters xDLegend has it that when it comes to Chinese BL ML that has a military background, there’s a 90% chance that their personality is either:
Type 1: Expressionless, cold-outside-hot-inside, all-powerful
or Type 2: Hot-tempered, thick-skinned, whenever they speak – you feel like smacking them (and to be honest, I personally think that military men in real life do have this tendency)
Tang Xuhai indisputably falls into Type 2 I suppose xD
I’m aware that this novel is a hit-or-miss to many people ^_^ The characters aren’t the most likable within the first 15 chapters or so, and I can’t/won’t defend them. But since your comment is very insightful, I guess one thing I could share though is that this novel is written back in 2014, at which point characterisation was different and certain behaviours that used to be considered okay no longer work these days (you’ll be surprised, Danmei trends really change every 5 years or so).
Other than that, like I always say, it’s all up to the readers’ judgment and this translator won’t try to influence your experience (ใฅ ๏ฟฃ ยณ๏ฟฃ)ใฅ๏ฝโฅ Thank you for reading still, and for such amazingly encouraging comments. See you~
nyah ๐ฎ
I really didn’t know this! Wah, thank you for explaining Michelle!
I don’t understand why people are so sensitive. When I read straight novels the MC will say worst thing to his friends/sidekicks/ lackeys. This is how men talk to each other. Stop using feminine sensibilities to judge how men banter.
exactly some people are like “WHy he talking bas to his wife” First of all he is a MAN not a woman, second I am pretty sure mc would not like being called wife. Everybody be forgetting that he is a man both of them are so it’s different from how girls talk
As a dude all I have to say is ‘No’. That’s not normal behavior, man or not- though in this case the ML behavior towards MC seems to be stemming from a huge misunderstanding caused by MC’s ‘persona’/stare/eyes. The ML so far has treated Mr. Wen politely enough. Also, what in lord’s name are ‘feminine sensibilities’? Like… is it female perception or…???
Though I do agree that people are a bit sensitive about ML’s behavior but everyone has their own preferences in the end.
I read a review before that while reading this novel, stay calm and take deeps breaths. It’s helping me now. Like no offense but isn’t this guy a bit too slow? The aliens can come at any moment and yet this ‘genius’ isn’t ready to drive. I don’t even know whom to feel angry at…
Translator here, thank you for checking out this novel ๐ Not gonna lie, the review tells the truth: heโs slow at the beginning. And in all fairness, the novel tags (which I have put *very* careful effort into when I set them on NovelUpdates) + authorโs note has made this point very clear ๐
Albeit, allow me to be firm that the author has never described him as a โgeniusโ at any point. He just happens to have a PhD, and having a PhD doesnโt always mean that person is a genius ^^
All I could say is letโs hope he gets better (he will)! And hopefully Iโll see you in future chapters ^_^
ahhh poor Fu Shiwu, he really does care but his gaze and nature make it hard to approach and understand him :((
I know, poor Fu Shiwu :C
I believe in him, one day his gaze will be soft!
Thank you for the chapter โค๏ธ
I feel refreshed with their dynamic
Than at first lovey dovey or friendly like others pairings in most Novels, i feel like their Dynamic unique and can’t wait their developments to each other ๐ฅฐ afterall their opinion at first is bad for the other person, so this is logic if their dynamic like this.
This story is very interesting โจ
Hi Cridale,
Thanks so much for checking this novel out too โค๏ธ
I personally adore this type of dynamic, and the fact they then become comrades then fall in love really is just *chef kiss* to me (I suppose I have quite a bias for comrade-kind of relationship :D) I’m very glad that you like our two mains!
Hope to see your support in future chapters ^^
Thanks for the chapter!
The story is interesting, but the main characters doesn’t seem to be very likeable but then it’s not even 20 chapters yet so it’s still up for debate
Hi Bone balloon, thank you for checking out this novel nevertheless. Totally understand that the initial presentation of the MC might not be easily liked (even I feel so when I read the first few chapters). Things indeed will change in due time, but I’ll leave it up to your judgement, and again, thank you for reading thus far ^^
