Chapter 96

When it came to special abilities, something that remained very mysterious and unknown even till this day, Captain Zou’s only choice was to believe what they said. He immediately asked the soldiers to quickly notify the other platoons, then sent them to the firepower supply department to bring more ammunition over.

The blazes from heavy machine guns thickened their fire web even further, and even the soldiers who were taking a rest carried some grenades and jumped to the low wall. The roar of gunfire and explosion reverberated in intense waves, making the defence areas around them almost too stifling to breathe in.

It’s already about to get dark and the battle is soon coming to end, so why are they getting all worked up over there?

But, before the others could think twice, ear-splitting screams pierced the sky.

“Ah —” A special ability user was unsuspectingly swooped up by a Level-2 alien that had climbed atop another Level-1 alien, like a ferocious wolf pounding at its prey!

Before his comrades could save him, one after another, more Level-2 aliens flew up, as though rockets had been attached to their feet.

“Puff!” Catching everyone off-guard, the alien plunged its tube straight into the special ability user’s head. The man could only open his eyes wide before dying on the spot.

“Sh*t!!!” The defence soldier on the high wall gaped in horror before picking up a rifle and a bayonet, stabbing it at the alien that had jumped to his feet.

With a crisp “pop”, long tentacles wrapped around the semi-automatic rifle’s body and an overwhelming force flashed towards him. The soldier was dragged to the front, and meeting his eyes was a tube ejected from the alien’s flapping mouthparts.

Such attacks were happening everywhere, and screams after screams echoed in the air.

Captain Zou roared: “Stand firm! Fire! Fire now!!!”

At this moment, from Pei City behind their back came a noise that sounded even more tormenting than the alert siren they had heard in the morning.

Captain Zou breathed a long sign and shouted sternly: “Hold it! Reinforcements will come soon!”

A commotion crushed the entire Pei City. The only other time they had ever heard this siren was during a drill. No matter whether the person was male, female, healthy or sick, or whether it was an ordinary man or ability user, everyone had to head for the city wall and join in the battle.

In a blink, Pei City became a war machine.

Tang Xuhai clutched the hilt of his greatsword in both hands, turned his sturdy waist and fiercely swept the blade across, neatly chopping off the Level-2 alien that was bouncing towards him.

Zhou Weihua’s group struggled a little, for after all, although the previous battle was nowhere easy, most of the aliens back there were merely Level-1 cannon fodders. But, this round consisted entirely of Level-2 aliens.

Just when they were staggering left and right and the situation got more challenging by the second, “Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!!!”, something brushed past their bodies and rammed into the alien.

The monstrous alien in front of them went stiff and collapsed.

Zhou Weihua took a peek to see a big hole form on the alien’s chest, with a smell of severe burn wafting out.

“Don’t just freeze there!” Fu Shiwu yelled with a grim tone: “Continue to fight, I’ll assist you!”

“Oh… Okay!” Zhou Weihua’s thumped joyously and he immediately turned all his attention on the outside of the city wall, where only ominous darkness was emanating.

No one knew how many Level-2 had blended in the alien wave below. The only option left for them was to raise their alertness to its peak and deal with these Level-2 creatures that had evolved to be much faster and stronger, whose attacks were getting increasingly difficult to block.

Fu Shiwu’s sharp eyes stared intently below, and with a slight tilt of his hands, the two guns made a “swoosh” sound, sending the energy bullets to rip through the air and towards the target.

His wrists were aching, his shoulders were sore and beads of sweat were drenching his forehead, because the recoil of the energy gun was much heavier than that of an ordinary pistol. If he was to say that there was no difficulty for him to adapt to an ordinary pistol’s recoil, this energy pistol’s recoil actually forced him to exert all his powers.

If this continued, very soon, he would lose his accuracy.

Fu Shiwu felt a brutal intent wash over his heart, and swamped with resolution, he decided to turn his ‘perception’ to its maximum. Without him being able to aim, the energy bullets in the pistol would fly out in sheer chaos. He must find another way.

In the three-dimensional image, the trajectory of the bullet quickly appeared before his eyes. Fu Shiwu no longer had to aim through the pistol’s crosshair, but based on the trajectory of the shot.

Fu Shiwu’s eyes brightened, Fantastic, this can be done!

Fu Shiwu bit his lower lip and walked two steps forward. He stood in the frontline with his arms opened wide and the gun muzzles slightly slanted to a side, his eyes gazing straight ahead.

“Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!…” A blue light flashed at the muzzle, and one after another, bright sparks burst out of it.

The energy bullets drew peculiar lines, as though they were fireworks that drifted indiscriminately on the sky of New Year’s Eve. The crooked lines crossed each other, mercilessly ramming into the aliens that were jumping up.

With Fu Shiwu’s powers suddenly blowing up, without a stop, more and more Level-2 aliens were killed in mid-air before plummeting to the sea of aliens below.

Instantly, the pressure on Area F22 dropped. Taking a breath, Tang Xuhai wiped his sweat and looked up at the cold figure standing above, the corner of his lips tugging up.

Before everyone could be amazed at Fu Shiwu’s brutal killing and relax the tension in their heart a little, Fu Shiwu pursed his lips and put down the pistols, his expression blank: “They’re getting a bit hot…”

“Damn!” Tang Xuhai glared sharply at him.

“There are still so many Level-2 aliens…” Fu Shiwu fired at the aliens with one hand, while his other hand started to shake the gun in the hope of cooling it down quickly.

Even in his wobbling hand, the muzzle spit out blue energy bullets, which turned into frenzied lines that accurately smashed into the aliens’ chests.

“Goodness gracious…” Shao Le couldn’t keep his eyes away. This was the first time he had ever seen such a marvellous gunner.

This shouldn’t be called a ‘sharpshooter’; they might as well call him ‘God of Shooting’!!!

“Don’t stand there in a daze!” Tang Xuhai kicked him. Although he was also proud of Fu Shiwu inside, this wasn’t the time to casually admire him.

“Aaaaah!!!” An agonising scream came from the side, and before Fu Shiwu could react, an alien slammed onto a rifle-holding soldier next to him.

Fu Shiwu’s mind went completely blank. Having no time to think about anything, he subconsciously flipped his muzzle and “swoosh, swoosh!!!”, the two shots killed the alien at once.

But it was too late. The soldier’s brain had been blown by the alien, its fragments now splattering all over the floor.

“We lost F23!!!”

Very vaguely, Captain Zou’s bellow rang in their ears amidst the sounds of aliens attacking from both sides and the front.

Fu Shiwu could only continue using the gun even with its muzzle turning hotter, and the other gun, which had only cooled off a tiny bit, also had to join in the battle.

The searchlights on the wall had all been switched on, turning the space as bright as daylight. The aliens’ deafening screams tore off the air, cornering everyone’s hearts into deeper desperation.

Fu Shiwu had to defend the aliens attacking from F23 by himself while Tang Xuhai and the others were responsible for the creatures at the front.

“Pay attention to the situation in F21. We may lose them at any point!” Tang Xuhai yelled towards the people around them.

Then he turned around and said to Zhen Zi: “Don’t attack the aliens one by one, use a large-scale sonic attack. As long as the aliens seem to come to a halt, that’s enough!”

Zhen Zi’s small face tightened: “Understood!”

Opening her mouth, she took a deep breath and exhaled a silent sound wave, and instantly, the alien’s movements were conspicuously delayed.

As he caught the sight, Zhou Weihua fired thunderbolts in all directions, hitting them hard against the aliens.

The small change that Zhen Zi had enabled allowed them to be a tad more at ease, or at least, they weren’t so nervous or flustered anymore.

After a full day of fighting and merely gulping down little water at noon, Zhen Zi’s throat had started to itch as she kept using her sonic power. As she tried to inhale a large puff of air, a cough couldn’t be held back any further. At this point, other special ability users who had got used to the rhythm failed to tune in their attacks in time.

Seeing the bad turn of situation, Fu Shiwu quickly got rid of the aliens on his side, turned around and fired at an alien that had taken this chance to climb up.

An alien that slipped through the fire net tried to assault Wen Zhaoming. Although the creature slumped down because of Fu Shiwu’s timely shot, due to inertia, it bumped into the box underneath Wen Zhaoming’s wheelchair. Wen Zhaoming tried his best to stand up, but his movements were sluggish due to the influence of the prostheses.

The alien leaping towards him couldn’t wait to swing its hooked tentacles, trying to wrap them around Wen Zhaoming.

“Zhaoming!” Fu Shiwu directly jumped down, and tossing his guns to the side, he reached out to pull Wen Zhaoming.

Fu Shiwu dragged Wen Zhaoming away in time, but the tentacles caught him instead. He only felt that something was being pulled off from the side of his arm, followed by excruciating pain.

“Shiwu!” Tang Xuhai rushed over and toppled Fu Shiwu over just as the alien’s tube flew over the two of them.

Wen Zhaoming staggered back until he leaned against the high wall. Watching a layer of flesh being torn off Fu Shiwu’s arm by the alien’s tentacle hook, he was instantly enraged.

With a muffled sound, a ball of flame blew up.

“Squeak!!!” The alien screeched and flew in the opposite direction, its body now a mess of burnt flesh and blood.

But Wen Zhaoming simply blanked out, as if he didn’t understand what he had just done at all.

Tang Xuhai looked at him in bewilderment. Pressed under him, Fu Shiwu coughed wryly.

Tang Xuhai swiftly got up and pulled Fu Shiwu over. At this juncture, Fu Shiwu couldn’t pay any mind to his wound, for the aliens had once again crossed over the fire net and were rushing at them.

The greatsword in Tang Xuhai’s hands immediately split into two and transformed into duo swords. With a deep roar, he raised his arms and slit towards the alien.

Fu Shiwu coughed and blinked a few times, then said to Wen Zhaoming: “How did you do that just now? Can you continue?”

Only now did Wen Zhaoming react, and gathering all the calmness he still had left, he replied: “I can!”

He had experienced such a fiery force many times before and understood the principle very well, but he wanted to avoid potential explosions. It never came to him that he could use the ability to create this effect.

To them, the brutal battle seemed to have lasted for a long time, but it had only been a short ten minutes.

A commotion came from behind them, signalling that and the first batch of reinforcements were climbing up the city wall.

Zhou Weihua and the others, who had been worn out from a whole day of fighting, finally heaved a sigh of relief.

But, that didn’t last long.

Although the people that climbed up were also ability users and mutants, they had much less combat experience and were simply cannon fodders.

These men were simply gambling their very lives away against the aliens.

The rest could only put up a painful expression and bite the bullet to continue fighting, for there was no way they could just watch those men die in vain.

Gasping hard for air, Captain Zou said: “Don’t worry, they are residents who stay closest to here. The special ability users from East Development District that haven’t joined in the battle will arrive soon.”

Those that hadn’t become part of the battle were members of the guilds and exploration squads. Expectedly, they should be much better than these cannon fodder fighters.

Tang Xuhai said with a solemn expression: “We can’t go on like this. There are too many Level-2 aliens. No matter how many people we have, it won’t be enough.”

Captain Zou’s face turned scarily pale: “What other way would you suggest?”

Tang Xuhai licked his lips, revealing a ruthless expression: “The only way is to get rid of their leaders, the Level-3 aliens! These aliens are all mobilised by the Level-3 ones.”

Shao Le, who was standing close to them, slowly walked over and say: “He’s right! Earlier, back at Ping Nan, only when we carried the Level-3 alien into jail and dealt with it that all the other aliens retreated.”

Captain Zou was caught in a deep thought, his expression grim.

Fu Shiwu and the others didn’t know, but Captain Zou knew that the alien siege this time wouldn’t be so easy to resolve. The capital had been able to force the aliens to back away solely thanks to the planes and cannons they had in reserves. They had never managed to locate the leaders hiding amid the alien wave.

Although the Level-3 aliens had more prominent features, when more than one hundred thousand aliens had gathered here, it would be a miracle to think that they could find the Level-3 aliens among these naked, plain-skin creatures.

  • Fu Shiwu.... don't shoot while your arm is injured so badly... you'll die of blood loss T-T

I love Shiwu so much, he's one of these few characters I actually respect and love without the author trying to force it on the reader. There's a lot of amazing characters in this novel but no one seems nobler and more worthy of praise than Shiwu in my personal opinion. He's not actually OP (in an all-rounder or omnipotent sense)- he's an amazing shooter, yes, and he also has a great perception ability but other than that he can barely do much yet he still courageously risks his life in situations where there's a extremely high likelihood he'll die, refusing to let his friends shoulder any burdens alone. Despite being the squadron leader he's never once been haughty or tried to act like he's superior compared to other people nor has he enjoyed any special privileges. He's pure, honest, sweet and an overall outstanding dude. I'd be so proud if I had the honor of being related to this guy in any way or form. I'd be proud to even walk on the sand ground as him.... or to be the alien slain at his hands.... He's so amazing T♡T
