Chapter 54

Wen Zhaoming watched the two of them continuously whispering in low voices. He waited for a while but nothing seemed to happen.

He drove the electric wheelchair over and poked Tang Xuhai: “How is it? What have you found?”

Tang Xuhai came back to his senses and said nonchalantly: “No, nothing has been found.”

This method of heightening their abilities had yet to be tested, so he couldn’t just spill nonsense.

Seeing Wen Zhaoming coming over, Fu Shiwu lightly twitched his body and Tang Xuhai finally let go of him: “I’ll explore the other half of the area, so you don’t need to use that special ability anymore.”

Fu Shiwu pushed his glasses up and let out an “Oh”. By now, he was too lazy to argue that this ‘unique’ ability of his wasn’t a special ability.

Miao Jia couldn’t quite understand when he looked at them from behind. Just now, Tang Xuhai entirely covered Fu Shiwu with his whole body, so Miao Jia couldn’t see anything but Tang Xuhai lowering his head and talking to Fu Shiwu.

The two of them must have a very good relationship. Miao Jia had a complicated thought. But isn’t that a bit too intimate?…

Fu Shiwu didn’t know that from this moment on, someone had quietly misunderstood what was going on between the two of them. As he opened the door and climbed into the car, Tang Xuhai also turned around and headed back.

Wen Zhaoming moved back to the car by himself, firmly grabbed the handle and got into the car also all by himself. This handle was specially modified for him by Tang Xuhai. Its position was just right and its support strength was convenient.

Miao Jia put away the wheelchair and everybody moved swiftly. In just a few seconds, the car was ready to start. Meanwhile, the few people behind also settled down.

Arriving at the location designated by Fu Shiwu, Tang Xuhai got out and walked around with his duo swords. He found no signs of living people, aliens or mutated animals.

Fu Shiwu stood in front of the others with a calm expression and said: “Before it gets dark, everyone is free to move around for the next two hours, but don’t leave the area of the town. Return to the parking spot before 8 o’clock. You can collect your own necessities during this period. The main purpose of this trip is to collect gasoline and clothes to be worn when the temperature goes down. By the way, if we smoothly reach the military district, the resources there may not be better than that in Yun City, so you can also collect some winter clothes.”

Tang Xuhai stood in military posture with his hands on his back and said with a grim expression: “I suggest that you search inside the commoners’ houses. Needless to say, you may not avoid catching certain sights that you can’t quickly adapt to.”

As the eight standing opposite them heard those words, several people’s expressions turned dark.

The “sights that they can’t quickly adapt to” could only be rotting human corpses.

They had seen alien corpses several times and also laid eyes on the bodies of people who died on that rainy night, but the corpses they were going to see this time were those that were left rotting in this town without a care…

Think of those sights, a few of them shuddered.

“Disperse!” Fu Shiwu glanced coldly at them before taking his leave.

After walking a few steps forward, Fu Shiwu’s stiff shoulders finally relaxed and he quietly heaved a sigh of relief. He was still not used to this way of making speeches. It had been all thanks to Tang Xuhai telling him in advance on what to say, otherwise, his head would be completely empty.

This wasn’t good. His role was to be the leader of this small team. It’s not okay to be nervous when talking to people like this!

Fu Shiwu secretly encouraged himself. Next time he would work even harder and try to have serious conversations with more of them.

Tang Xuhai didn’t walk in the same direction as Fu Shiwu, rather, he walked straight into a house along the street.

The gate of this private house directly faced the street. He tried pushing the gate and decided to not waste time unlocking it. Neatly, he climbed over the wall and entered the house.

There was an unpleasant smell coming from the yard. The owners of this house had all been killed by aliens, their corpses lying in the open yard. Almost two months had passed and the flesh had fallen off these rotting corpses, revealing even the bones inside.

“Tsk.” Lost for words, Tang Xuhai walked around the corpses to get into the house.

This private house contained five rooms, which were divided into east and west wings, one on each side of the yard. Tang Xuhai’s eyes swept throughout the house.

This house was still in relatively good conditions. The rooms were decorated rather minimally, with carpets on the floors and carvings on the ceilings.

Tang Xuhai glanced indifferently over the TV cabinet and refrigerator, then turned and walked into the next room. This was the bedroom with two large wardrobes. He walked directly to the wardrobes and opened one of them to find beddings inside. The other one carried some summer clothes, but he couldn’t find any autumn and winter clothes yet.

Tang Xuhai thought for a moment and turned around to lift the quilt on the bed, revealing the bed board below.

The bed board was made up of several boards. He pulled the quilt to the ground and opened the board. There were clothes inside.

Pulling them all out, Tang Xuhai found lady’s clothes in the pile. Unflinching, he put those aside to grab the next bag. The clothes in this were all men’s.

Judging from the house conditions and style of decoration, the owners should be a couple of no more than 40 years old. They must have quite a well-off background, and this was reflected on the clothes they bought.

In any case, Tang Xuhai didn’t care whether these clothes were outdated or out-of-fashion. He firmly took out a few long-sleeved pieces and thermal underwear, plus a few thick coats.

Tang Xuhai stretched the clothes in his hands and frowned as he took a good look at them. The size was too small for either him or Fu Shiwu, so it could likely only fit Miao Jia.

But it’s still better than nothing. Thinking so, he took those clothes and left.

After the house was left uncared for for two months, the food had gone so bad that it could no longer be eaten. The staples had also been invaded by insects and completely ruined.

Tang Xuhai didn’t touch any of those. They probably would only succumb to such food until they had no other choice.

No one seemed to have passed by this small town since the sky veil phenomenon happened, thus most of the things were still left intact.

Meanwhile, Fu Shiwu directly stepped on the broken glass to enter a supermarket. Everything was in a mess and there were even large patches of blood all over the place.

As a strange smell engulfed him, Fu Shiwu endured the discomfort and walked forward.

Most of the things in this supermarket remained untouched, but unfortunately, they had limited holding space, so he could only choose to take certain important items.

Salt, sugar, seasonings…

Unable to carry so many items, Fu Shiwu simply found a shopping basket and put them all in.

He cast a regretful look at the instant noodles of various flavours, then he determinedly turned away and pulled out the bags of rice and flour at the bottom of the food shelf.

Fu Shiwu didn’t stop until he couldn’t carry anymore.

He swept one last unwilling gaze at the small supermarket, and when his eyes landed on the cash register, they stopped for a second.

Lollipops.

A bright light flashed in Fu Shiwu’s eyes. Tang Xuhai had been struggling to quit smoking, but his mouth apparently always felt empty. It might be good to get him some sweets to stop that empty feeling.

Thiking that it was a good idea, Fu Shiwu comfortably sandwiched a large box of lollipops of different flavours under his arm.

Of course, it was only convenient that he ate some of them on the way. Only convenient!

The things sold on the main street of this small town were really quite monotonous. Apart from daily necessities, there were only two clothing shops, one pharmacy and one shop that sold solar-power water heaters.

The rest were open-air restaurants or pancake stalls.

There was no gas station in this town. Luckily, some residents drove cars and enough gasoline could be collected from their gas tanks.

More or less, everyone got food and cooking oil, and although the clothes didn’t fit really well, everyone got something for themselves.

Fu Shiwu was still okay, but for Tang Xuhai, any piece of clothes turned out massively lacking for his build.

But there was no other way. Who asked him to have such way-above-average height?

As Fu Shiwu tried to press down the corners of his mouth to hold back a smile, Tang Xuhai gave him a sharp glare of displease.

He looks really funny. Fu Shiwu could only hope that they would be able to find suitable clothes for Tang Xuhai once they reached the military district.

The sky gradually darkened. After the team gathered, they drove out of the town and arrived at an open ground a few kilometers away.

There were crop fields directly next to it. This large open ground should be where the harvested grains were dried.

Although it would be great to spend the night indoors, considering their situation, if they didn’t have a wide field of vision, it would be fatal if any alien or mutant animal attacked.

Because everyone brought back some food, tonight they could eat extravagantly with rice and stir-fried vegetables. They were all home-grown — even though by now, they had become a tad wilted.

In the evening, as before, they divided into two shifts of guard duty. No aliens were found near the town and the aliens that descended closest to their spot probably didn’t choose to head in this direction, so they all had a peaceful rest throughout the night.

It started to rain the next day, and as expected from Miao Jia’s forecast, the weather began to cool down.

As the wind outside made him feel a bit cold, Fu Shiwu closed the car window.

Still holding onto the wheel as usual, Tang Xuha cast a glance at Fu Shiwu: “Cold?”

Fu Shiwu looked at him with a little embarrassment: “A bit.”

Tang Xuhai asked: “We have clothes now, why don’t you wear them?”

Although he was spilling venom as always, Tang Xuhai turned to close the window on his side.

“It’s okay, you can keep it open on your side.” Fu Shiwu felt even more embarrassed.

“Lao Wen, find him a piece of clothing.” Tang Xuhai said with his eyes still fixed at the front.

Wen Zhaoming turned around and rummaged through the clothes next to him, then handed over a long-sleeved T-shirt that Fu Shiwu could likely fit in.

Taking the T-shirt, a hint of struggle came over Fu Shiwu’s face.

“Why don’t you put it on?” Tang Xuhai looked at him with puzzlement: “Aren’t you feeling cold?”

Fu Shiwu’s face turned slightly pale. He tried to forge a smile: “I always wear a shirt and a cardigan outside. I’ve never worn T-shirts before.”

“Geez~” Tang Xuhai sneered, shook his head and said: “I can’t compare to a man with so many principles like you. Look at our situation now, you should be happy that we even have something to put on. Don’t be so fussy, hurry up and put it on!”

Behind them, Wen Zhaoming also voiced out in a pacifying tone: “Let’s not care too much if it looks nice or not. Aren’t you cold? It’ll be bad if you catch a cold. Quickly put it on.”

Fu Shiwu squeezed the T-shirt tightly in his hands and his smile became even more complicated: “It’s okay, I think it’s okay. If I put it on now, what should I do if it gets even colder later?”

Tang Xuhai looked at him with utter bafflement. Even your face is getting pale from the cold, why are you still so stubborn?

“Didn’t you say that we have to say it out loud if we feel unwell? You said it yourself, right?” Tang Xuhai looked at him with icy eyes: “You’re obviously feeling cold, what are you being all stubborn for? It’s not like we don’t have enough clothes?”

The atmosphere in the front row became tense and Miao Jia could only shrink back, stealthily peeking at the two of them arguing.

By this point, Wen Zhaoming didn’t dare to speak anymore. After all, Tang Xuhai and Fu Shiwu were closer, so he felt that it wasn’t appropriate for him to interrupt.

Fu Shiwu didn’t know how to explain this. He had no idea why he had to refuse wearing this piece of clothing. Unable to express himself clearly to Tang Xuhai, he could only say with a difficult expression: “It’s not that I don’t want to wear it. It’s just that I can’t put on this type of clothes.”

Tang Xu laughed angrily: “You still have to wear a shirt and a tie?! At such desperate times, can you not be so particular? If you don’t care about such things, will you die?!”

Fu Shiwu’s face turned white with rage and he gritted his teeth: “I’m not being particular, I really just can’t wear it!”

Tang Xuhai exploded: “Fine, then don’t wear it! Go ahead and freeze yourself to death!”
