Chapter 50

Fu Shiwu caught sight of Liao Ke and Wang Ziping during the gathering of the special ability users back in the warehouse. How could he die in just a few days?

Could it be that he died the night the evolved aliens sneaked in?

Hollande said: “Wang Ziping gave this crossbow to me when the aliens invaded the warehouse. Maybe the former owner was dead at that time, and I happened to be good at archery.”

“Then why don’t you stay with Wang Ziping?” Fu Shiwu couldn’t help asking: “Why come to us on your own volition?”

“That Wang Ziping…” Hollande shook his head and said: “If it’s a time of peace, maybe he can give benefits to people who have the same interest as him, but in this apocalypse where we need to escape, he isn’t the most convincing as a leader. Hollande was born in a country with a different governance system from Huaxia, and the difference in values probably made his words sound especially straightforward. Fu Shiwu felt a bit complicated. He didn’t know how to judge this Hollande, so he didn’t say anything.

Hollande’s favour towards Fu Shiwu was rather obvious. Even with Fu Shiwu’s indifferent attitude, he continued on and on. He talked about all kinds of interesting things he encountered when coming to Huaxia and even introduced his company.

Hollande spoke very authentic Mandarin and was also able to use some local slangs. Although Fu Shiwu didn’t respond at first, a while later, he added a couple sentences and gradually forgot about the discomfort he felt at the beginning.

When Tang Xuhai came to take over the shift, Fu Shiwu was shocked to realise that Hollande was so sociable that he unknowingly let go of all the awkwardness.

Fu Shiwu sighed secretly. It would be nice if I know how to chit-chat like this.

By the time he woke up, the sky had started to light up and Tang Xuhai was calling out to him.

Everybody then gathered around the bonfire, ate very thin porridge and gnawed on dried meat.

With Huo Enting being a water-type special ability user, their worry about the lack of water was lifted and they could even wash themselves properly.

Under Tang Xuhai’s instructions, Ma Dong began to turn the mountain road below them into sand, making the ground impossible to walk on. Since the place Tang Xuhai chose was easy to defend and difficult to attack, the angle of attack was exceptionally narrow. With him laying out a trap like this, the group standing at the top of the mountain felt a lot more at ease.

Tang Xuhai chewed on a piece of grass and squinted at the rising sun.

“There are still five kilometers before they reach us!” Miao Jia reported loudly.

“Prepare to fight!” Tang Xuhai said in a deep voice.

When he decided to take this path, Tang Xuhai was already mentally prepared to face a full alien wave. The addition of Miao Jia made his plan a lot easier.

The aliens from this direction had moved along the road and attacked any village that they passed by. Compared with other national roads and highways, there were far fewer aliens here, but even so, this group of aliens consisted of as many as 1,000.

Tang Xuhai didn’t even need to use his brain to figure that there must be some evolved aliens in this group. Other alien waves were likely to spread out the more they ran forward, but evolved aliens were able to control those normal aliens that weren’t as smart as them. Thus, any huge wave of aliens must have some evolved aliens to be the leaders! By now, these evolved aliens had become cunning enough to hide among normal ones to suddenly jump out and ambush humans.

The human group’s presence was so conspicuous that an alien that was turning the corner immediately spotted them at a glance.

“Hiss —” With one shriek from this alien, the bunch of aliens that were walking slowly behind immediately began to run.

As their screams came one after another, the alien wave rushed over menacingly.

Fu Shiwu’s heart throbbed violently in his chest. His mouth went dry and he started feeling a tad nervous.

Although he just went through a huge battle against the aliens not long ago, it was a relatively open warehouse with a large number of people participating in it. At this moment, they were facing neither one to two nor ten to twenty, but a steady wave of thousands of aliens!

With a clear sky and a good field of vision, he could see the aliens baring their mouthparts and swinging the hooks on their tentacles, all while the bigger and smaller jaws in their mouthparts kept rubbing against each other.

I need to calm down!

Fu Shiwu looked at Tang Xuhai, who was at the peak of his concentration, and Wen Zhaoming, who was staring straight ahead. He wasn’t alone now; he had reliable friends beside him!

“Attack!” Tang Xuhai roared ragingly and drew his duo swords, holding them tightly in his hands.

Hearing that, Wen Zhaoming’s fireballs were the first to fly out.

As those aliens were trapped in a difficult path, it was impossible to dodge the fireballs coming their way. A few lonely trees on the mountain slope were immediately set on fire, then the fire became bigger, burning frantically.

“Will it cause a wildfire?” Fu Shiwu asked anxiously.

If the fire got bigger, they would definitely be dead.

“Don’t worry, I asked Ma Dong to make an isolation belt.” Tang Xuhai nodded towards the slope below them: “It won’t burn us. It won’t even cross to other mountains.”

Sand made the best isolation belt, because it was bare. If there was nothing, the flames could only burn the aliens.

The aliens screamed in misery, but these creatures that had been hungry for a long time wouldn’t be scared off so soon. Instead, they charged forward even more fiercely, stepping on other aliens’ corpses and forcibly forging a new path.

As the aliens increased in their number and got closer, Fu Shiwu raised his arms.

Tang Xuhai pressed down his wrists and said to him: “You don’t have to care about these, just pay attention to the evolved aliens and keep your bullets to deal with those.”

“Understood.” Fu Shiwu nodded with a serious expression and clutched the gun grip tightly.

Seeing his overly serious eyes, Tang Xuhai felt like smiling. He lightly rubbed Fu Shiwu’s hair and got Fu Shiwu’s puzzled look as a response.

“Cough~” Tang Xuhai then said to the other people: “You can attack.”

Huo Enting felt a little hesitant. Although he participated in the battle on that rainy night, at that time, the rain was very heavy and the increment added to his power was hefty. But on such a bright day, he himself didn’t like his own ability.

Huo Enting sprayed one water ball after another to hit the aliens, but it was barely enough to tickle them. Then he changed to producing water pillars, but he didn’t dare to have them move far away in fear of extinguishing Wen Zhaoming’s fire.

Fu Shiwu looked at his water pillars and couldn’t help but ask: “How much water can you release at most?”

“About 10 tons, not more than that.” Huo Enting said.

“10 tons…” Fu Shiwu thought for a moment: “For your water attack, you can either pour it all down at once to wash away the aliens, or you can shape it into water arrows.”

“I’ve tried it before, but water arrows didn’t work too well either.” Huo Enting said. Seeing that the effect of his attack wasn’t great, he directly stopped releasing his power at this point. When water seeped into sand, it only made the ground more solid; this wouldn’t help them at all!  

Fu Shiwu said: “Your water right now is just pure water. It’ll be fantastic if it’s mixed with sulfuric acid or aqua regia1As a combination of HNO₃ and HCl, it’s one of the strongest acids in the world. It is known as the only acid that can dissolve gold..”

Huo Enting smiled bitterly. This ability of his was awakened like this, how could he make it suddenly turn into acid? Not to mention, he might end up burning himself first.

Fu Shiwu said very seriously: “Tang Xuhai’s metal-type ability can change the arrangement of metal elements. Maybe your water can also turn into liquids of different elemental structures. It might be possible to transform it into acid.”

Huo Enting’s eyes flashed and he began to earnestly think about it.

Sulfuric acid was a liquid after all. Why wouldn’t it be possible?

Fu Shiwu continued: “Actually, I think water attacks aren’t bad at all. Water guns are also great. Don’t we often see it on TV? I saw it on the news. In other countries, the police may employ high-pressure water guns sometimes.”

For some reason, when Fu Shiwu tried to give suggestions to the applications of special abilities, all sorts of whimsical ideas would pop up in his mind. Previously, he also asked Tang Xuhai to directly change the car body itself instead of adding more accessories.

“My water arrows are of a similar idea.” Pulling back his spirits, Huo Enting stretched out a finger to spray out a water arrow, but it could only numb the alien’s skin.

“It seems like your pressure isn’t enough.” Fu Shiwu said: “Increase the pressure.” 

Huo Enting shook his head: “It’s very difficult.”

“It’s not possible?” Fu Shiwu asked with a regretful tone.

Huo Enting was dazed by this question. It wasn’t impossible actually; it was just extremely difficult…

“I can try.” Huo Enting’s eyes furrowed and he cast an intense, resentful look at the aliens before making his attempt.

Within the few minutes that the two men talked, the aliens had finally climbed up to them after much difficulty. Tang Xuhai swung his duo swords and sneered at the aliens who dared to come near.

Fu Shiwu watched Tang Xuhai fighting the aliens with intent eyes. Tang Xuhai was guarding his side very firmly, ensuring that no aliens could make even one step past his defence line.

Holding on two sharp sticks made of steel bars, Liu Zhao and Wu Shan cooperatively slashed them at the aliens. It seemed that this was their weapon of choice.

Wang Dan kept flying up and kicking one alien after another, while Ma Dong and Liu Peiqi used sharp branches to pierce the aliens’ exposed chest.

Wen Zhaoming chose to not release his attack at the aliens that came close for fear that he might accidentally hurt his own teammates, so he focused on attacking those in the distance.

The more it was to the top of the mountain, the smaller the space there was for them to stand on. As Tang Xuhai’s group stood guard up at the peak, the aliens could only line up into a long chain. There was no way for an alien standing behind to stomp past its own kin to attack these humans.

Their instinct made them dodge Wen Zhaoming’s incredibly hot fire, but the more-evolved aliens knew that they had to get past this challenge to advance. When Fu Shiwu saw that the sandy ground was beginning to crystalise under the heat, he said to Ma Dong: “Continue to turn it into sand!”

Seeing Ma Dong being stunned, Wang Dan quickly said: “Get to it. It’s okay here with Liu Peiqi and me!” 

Without wasting another word, Ma Dong nodded and began to turn the ground into sand once more.

As the ground below the aliens’ feet started sinking again, they couldn’t keep their balance and stumbled left and right.

By now, the entire alien wave had gathered right below the mountain peak, cruelly pushing and shoving each other. One alien simply climbed onto other aliens to move past the crowd.

With an extraordinarily sharp glance, Fu Shiwu raised his hand and shot at the alien that was standing on top of another.

At this moment, a figure suddenly flew up from the alien wave, flicking its tentacles towards Tang Xuhai.

Tang Xuhai was thrusting the alien in front of him. At this critical moment, he had only enough time to look up but couldn’t avoid the ambush.

Staying completely calm, Fu Shiwu fired both guns in his hands.

With a string of crisp noises, the alien that stepped on its own kin had its head burst open and thudded heavily on the ground, while the flying alien’s had its arms drenched in blood from the bullets’ damage.

“Squeak —” The alien let out an excruciating scream but ferociously refused to give up. Slamming its feet on the other alien’s head, the creature flew its whole body towards Fu Shiwu.
