Chapter 93

In the morning, Fu Shiwu was awakened by the sharp chirping sound.

Not having slept well due to the defence mission the next day, he jumped up at once.

“What situation?!” Miao Jia, one who hadn’t slept all night and whose head was assaulted with waves of dizziness, mustered with a gloomy expression.

With his nerves almost numb from worries, Fu Shiwu hurriedly patted his hair and rushed downstairs.

In the living room on the first floor, Tang Xuhai was already waiting for him. Seeing him, Fu Shiwu’s worries unconsciously faded a lot.

“What happened?” Fu Shiwu asked.

“A war alert.” Tang Xuhai waved his hand indifferently, his legs leaning leisurely on the coffee table, then he said to the people who were coming down one after another: “It’s just the first wave of attacks. The time that the notice asks us to be there still hasn’t come, so don’t worry just yet.”

Tang Xuhai said to not worry, so he truly didn’t let any nervousness take over him. With a completely calm expression, he sat there restfully, asking the others to go wash up before heading over for breakfast.

Regarding military operations, he was the real man-in-charge among the three of them. Fu Shiwu and Wen Zhaoming had no choice but to wash up and eat breakfast despite many doubts clouding their minds.

That said, thanks to Tang Xuhai’s composure, those who had never experienced such a big event really did calm down.

Some time later, Tang Xuhai got up and left. By the time Fu Shiwu and the others got out of the dining room after breakfast, Miao Jia was hugging his laptop, chatting with Tang Xuhai about something.

“I understand. Today you’ll stay behind, just wait in Villa No.7. As an intel officer, you’ve done everything you have to, and the rest is upon us.” Tang Xuhai glanced at the dark circles below Miao Jia’s eyes and patted his head.

“I really don’t need to go with you?” Miao Jia said uneasily: “If I tag along, I can also help notify you of any movements from the aliens.”

“There’s no need to, we can leave on-site monitoring to Fu Shiwu.” Finishing his words, Tang Xuhai stood up and said to the others: “Let’s set off once we’re ready.”

Fu Shiwu called out to him: “You don’t want to have breakfast first?”

Turning around, Tang Xuhai quickly strode outside: “I’ve already eaten.”

With only Miao Jia left in the villa, the others gathered together and squeezed into the minivan. The crampedness might be a tad uncomfortable, but it was best that they acted together considering the uncertain situation ahead.

In the notice that came last night, beside the time and place, the section of the city wall that was specifically used for fleeing was carefully marked out. A detailed route map was also provided.

Miao Jia stayed up all night, diligently searching for any available information on the Focus Forum. He not only located defence intel from previous corps and guilds, but also discovered a lot of extremely valuable, confidential information that was only stored in the videos and images pulled from military satellites.

“When the time comes, Liu Peiqi, Wang Dan and Hollande, the three of you come to the defence soldiers stationed along the wall and someone will arrange what you have to do. According to the information found by Miao Jia, the job of mutants is generally to deliver intel and ammunition.” Tang Xuhai said. “Meanwhile, for Fu Shiwu, Lao Wen, Zhen Zi and I, since the four of us belong to the combat type, and given our high-level abilities, perhaps we’ll be arranged to kill aliens in the front line.”

“What should I do if I don’t have enough bullets?” Fu Shiwu stroked the guns hung at his waist. These two guns were obtained when he killed Shi Zheng and wiped out the Wild Wolf Gang. Because Shi Zheng had used an excessive amount of gunpowder to make his bombs, Fu Shiwu couldn’t find enough bullets eventually.

“Don’t worry, look for a logistics officer at that time.” Tang Xuhai glanced at him: “Believe me, after seeing your marksmanship, they won’t need you to find them. They’ll personally deliver ammunition to you.”

Pei City was the nearest city to the Military District of H Province, where the geographical position was dangerous and surrounded by many mountains and rivers, therefore an important, strategic point of Huaxia.

As such, the country had long set up multi-function plants nearby, which carried out usual production on any normal days, but when war broke out, these plants would transform into military workshops and deliver ammunition to the army continuously. After the apocalypse took place, the Military District of H Province took over Pei City and built a formidable survivor base there.

Although there was no financial support from the country at present, the military didn’t lack firepower and ammunition since they practised self-sufficiency and defended their production workshops well.

By the time Tang Xuhai’s group of seven arrived, there were already many people on the scene, everyone kept busy but exceptionally orderly. The minivan wasn’t allowed to come closer, so they had to stop far away and walk over.

As soon as they reported their Corps name, an officer specially responsible for overall management came to receive them at once.

The officer quickly marched over: “You all follow me!”

Before anyone had time to speak, the officer had already walked several meters away, so they could only follow closely.

“Listen well! I’ll only say it once!” The officer said in a hurry: “Your Dragonbone Corps is responsible for defending Area F22. The special ability users will report to Captain Zou, and the mutants will gather at the firepower supply point under the city wall. Are we clear?”

“Yes, sir”

His demeanor and tone had Fu Shiwu and the others subconsciously tense up.

Tang Xuhai’s eyebrows creased a little, but still, he quickly strode behind them without saying a word. After leading the group to the designated spot, the officer continued: “Up from this staircase is Areas 20-25. Go up and look for it yourself. Don’t go to the wrong area, otherwise, if the calculation of the Civil Points ends up incorrect, don’t blame me for not telling you in advance. “

Around them were soldiers moving back and forth at a rapid pace, the air feeling especially tight.

Tang Xuhai said: “Alright, don’t worry, I’m here. I certainly wouldn’t let you end up in the wrong area.”

The corner of Fu Shiwu’s mouth twitched a little. Is he trying to crack a joke?

Tang Xuhai said to the two mutants and Liu Peiqi: “You go to the firepower supply point. Today’s main task is physical work. It shouldn’t pose a challenge for any of you.”

Wang Dan and Hollande’s expression instantly became tense, while Liu Peiqi swallowed nervously. With a relaxed tone, Tang Xuhai gave them a few words of encouragement, then the three turned around to look for the firepower supply point.

Fu Shiwu looked up at the huge ten-meter-high city wall next to him, where a flight of stairs leading to the top had been put up.

A large Roman letter ‘F’ was written on the wall of the stairs, with a line ‘20-25’ right below it.

“Don’t think too much. Just do everything like how we usually do it. Level-3 aliens are nothing terrifying, they’re only faster.” Tang Xuhai whispered: “With Shiwu’s detection ability, we can stop them in advance.”

“Uhm.” Taking a deep breath, Fu Shiwu nodded.

Tang Xuhai glanced at the two sides before saying: “You two try to kill the Level-2 aliens, and pay close attention to your own safety. I’ve checked the information yesterday, Level-3 aliens won’t appear in the first battle, they probably would only give commands from the back. Fu Shiwu, if you spot any Level-3 alien, tell me at once, I’ll find ways to get rid of it. “

Fu Shiwu pondered for a moment and said: “But there won’t be only one Level-3 alien, right?”

“Indeed each pack of aliens should have only one level-3 leader, but a full wave of aliens that tries to attack a city is composed of several packs.” Tang Xuhai said in a low voice.

The others gasped out of sheer shock. At the moment, this fact was still confidential information that most people weren’t aware of, and no one really knew where Miao Jia discovered it either.

After Tang Xuhai carefully gave a few instructions, the group climbed to the top of the city wall. As they ascended, the deafening sound of guns and cannons bombarded their eardrums.

The upper part of the city wall wasn’t any plain structure, constructed with double layers of a low wall that was two-meter shorter than another wall behind it. The machine gunners stood on the high wall, while the special ability users were stationed on the low wall. Once any evolved aliens exerted their powerful springing force and tried to pounce over, it wouldn’t be able to come into direct contact with the machine gunners. The ability users were mainly responsible for killing any aliens that jumped up.

Tang Xuhai walked along the city wall and quickly reached Area 22, locating Captain Zou.

“You’re the leader? Why are there only four of you?” Captain Zou frowned, deep glabellar lines forming between his brows.

Fu Shiwu wordlessly clenched his fist and said with an unflinching expression: “There are eight members in our group, five are ability users and two are mutants, and also one ordinary person. Except for our wood-type ability users, the special ability users are all here.”

Captain Zou’s brows quivered a little, as though he was trying to be very patient. He said sternly: “In this case, the four of you will be responsible for defending the low wall in Area 22.”

Fu Shiwu didn’t feel that he completely understood it, but still, he responded impassively: “We won’t let go of even a single alien!”

Captain Zou’s brows finally relaxed a little, then he heaved a long sigh, nodding back at them.

By the time the four of them got down to the low wall, they seemed to still be able to feel Captain Zou’s complicated gaze.

“What’s the matter really?” Fu Shiwu was puzzled: “The captain seems to be dissatisfied?”

“I’ve no idea, maybe there’s a reason we don’t know.” Wen Zhaoming turned his head and took a deep look at the upper side: “The army doesn’t seem very at peace either.”

Tang Xuhai’s face was very gloomy, as though darkness could drip out of it: “There are factions in the army, and he’s probably caught in it. He’d better not let me find out that we’ve been dragged into some sort of ploy, or I’ll certainly make him regret it.”

The fact was really like what Tang Xuhai said; they had incidentally been dragged into a factional war, one where people would inevitably fight for power at any point in time.

Indeed, the F22 area of the city wall was short-staffed compared to others, not to mention each section of the wall was 20-meter long. With only four people responsible for all aliens, if it weren’t Fu Shiwu’s group but any other stationed here, there would likely be casualties.

The Level-1 aliens fully demonstrated why they were called cannon fodders. Large swamps of aliens assaulted the city wall, not afraid of death in the slightest. Although the machine gunners on the high walls kept shooting, there would still be aliens that managed to pass through the fire net to land on the shorter wall right below.

The towering city wall was entirely flat and had absolutely no edge to hold onto, seemingly giving them no chance to climb up, but these aliens stacked themselves on top of each other to form a ladder.

Initially thinking that no problem might arise, Fu Shiwu’s group was utterly stunned by the scene. Wen Zhaoming was the first to act, and as his flames flew out, the burning aliens started falling down amidst agonising screams.

At the same time, Fu Shiwu drew his pistol. Instead of hitting the aliens that came close to the top, he started shooting from the bottom, every bullet precisely killing or incapacitating one target, such that the ladder made of stacked-up aliens would collapse from the bottom and had no choice but to start again.

Zhen Zi followed suit, standing by his side and focused all her attacks towards the bottom.

Tang Xuhai was least afraid of close combat. He simply transformed a greatsword from his hand and slashed any alien that crawled up close.

Although there were only four people on the wall, not a single opening was allowed. As such, Captain Zou, who had been paying close attention, could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

  • I wonder if I’ll get to see Fu with a sniper rifle soon?

I feel like he’d really excel at it.

also I wonder if Tang can make a gun for Fu?

he was in the military so he should know the shape/ parts to make different types of guns from metal.
