Chapter 81

Watching Tang Xuhai catch two big fish in succession, Fu Shiwu felt truly stimulated. He slightly bent over, holding his breath and quietly waiting for a fish to pass by like Tang Xuhai did.

In the past, the fish in Shuijing Lake had been almost completely caught by nearby residents. Most of the fish in this lake now were stocked by the resort staff after the place was established as a scenic spot. After years of reproduction, the fish gradually grew more abundant.

In addition, after the sky veil opened, the heterogeneous molecules were all over the air and water. Following a period of ‘survival of the fittest’ when the big fish devoured all the small ones, the remaining fish had grown remarkably smarter and stronger.

Fu Shiwu wasn’t trying to be greedy and solely targeting the big fish. When a half-jin fish swam over, he followed Tang Xuhai’s move and shoved the steel pole downwards.

Fu Shiwu was very serious when he tried to learn anything. Even Tang Xuhai didn’t even notice that when he was fishing just now, Fu Shiwu had tightly locked all of Tang Xuhai’s movements into his perception.

When Tang Xuhai looked at the water while hunting down the fish, it didn’t seem that he particularly paid any attention to the angle of the steel pole against the water.

But Fu Shiwu didn’t need to care about this issue at this point. He directly used perception instead of his naked eye, so obviously, the issue of refraction angle no longer existed.

Fu Shiwu kept his bandaged right hand high above the water and stationed his left hand at the bottom of the pole. As soon as the pole went down, it accurately pierced into the fish’s body.

“I got it!” Fu Shiwu happily raised the spearfishing pole at Tang Xuhai.

“So fast?!” Tang Xuhai was utterly taken aback. He walked over and took a look. He really got it.

What Fu Shiwu caught was not an ordinary grass carp, but a black fish with an even better meat texture.

“How did you get it?” Tang Xuhai’s tone was tinged with disbelief.

Fu Shiwu blinked innocently: “I just followed your movements, and the fish was caught at once.”

“Followed my movements?” Tang Xuhai repeated: “Were you aiming at a position underwater or on the surface?”

“I plunged directly at the fish.” Fu Shiwu said.

“You mean you didn’t aim at either the surface or the water below?” Tang Xuhai said sharply.

“I used my perception to locate the fish, I didn’t use my eyes. Is there a problem?” Fu Shiwu was perplexed.

With his using this ‘ability’ more frequently, he had also found the convenience that it brought him. That was why he used the ‘ability’ to aim almost without thinking.

“There isn’t…” Tang Xuhai was actually choked and lost for words. How could he say that he was harbouring a mischievous idea just now?

After Fu Shiwu grasped this spearfishing skill, like Miao Jia and the others, he indulged in the thrill of catching his prey, one after another.

Seeing Fu Shiwu catch more and more fish, Tang Xuhai helplessly put away his steel pole.

He’s getting good at this obviously because my spearfishing pole is good! Tang Xuhai thought grumpily.

“Xuhai! Look!” Fu Shiwu stared at the center of the lake, and under the water, a dark shadow was rapidly swimming past them.

“Is that a fish?” Tang Xuhai said with uncertainty.

The shadow was really huge, likely more than one meter in length.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen a freshwater fish this size.” Fu Shiwu exclaimed.

“Why don’t we catch it for our meal later?” Tang Xuhai said.

“Should we?” Fu Shiwu said: “What if it’s a special ability animal like that giant ox? How will we deal with it?”

This didn’t make Tang Xuhai want to drop the idea. In life, there were sometimes occasions like this, when things fell down like a bolt from a blue. They had this saying, ‘if the mountain doesn’t come to one, one would come to the mountain himself’1The original idiom used here is ‘人不就山,山反倒是来就人’, which roughly means that as long as one tries his best and is not deterred by obstacles, success will follow..

Perhaps the commotion here caught this fish’s attention and it quietly lurked over. But sadly, its huge body in this shallow water made it betray itself.

Tang Xuhai’s expression shook up a little as a particularly thick steel pole suddenly appeared in his palm. He hadn’t made a move yet, but likely because the fish could feel the momentum of Tang Xuhai’s body, it ferociously flicked its tail.

“Wa —” As though a big wave had crashed over him, Tang Xuhai’s chest and head that hadn’t touched the water at all were now dripping wet.

Tang Xuhai wiped the water off his face that was now wearing a grim expression. The huge black figure circled back and forth around him, sending yet another ripple on the lake surface, then another —

Is it provoking me? This is absolutely a provocation, no?!

He could be tolerant, but he wouldn’t bow before a fish that looked down on him!

Tang Xuhai was positively enraged. How could a fish dare to show off in front of me?!

He turned around to face Fu Shiwu and asked: “Are you able to tell if this is a special ability fish?”

Fu Shiwu muffled a laugh: “Hm, this fish is not, probably a mutated fish.”

“Humph —” Tang Xuhai let out a sinister smile, his hands gripping the steel pole tightly: “We’ll have one fish divided into three courses for tonight. It’s time I bring it to the pot!”

As Tang Xuhai walked closer to the black fish in the center of the lake, the creature didn’t try to flee. With its size, it was indeed not afraid.

Fearing that Tang Xuhai would suffer a bitter loss, Fu Shiwu hurried down to the center of the lake to help him.

The teammates at the shore also noticed the big fish, and more of them started gathering around.

“That’s a snakehead! What a gigantic snakehead fish!”

“Such a big fish, it’s at least 1.2- or 1.3-meter long!”

“Not bad, how many jins does it weigh?!”

“At least a hundred jins?”

Tang Xuhai turned a deaf ear to the noise behind him, for he was focusing on subduing this arrogant fish that was acting as though Tang Xuhai didn’t exist.

Fu Shiwu was feeling a tiny bit strange. What sort of popularity had Tang Xuhai gathered onto himself these days? First it was a corn plant, now it was a fish; one after another, they turned up their nose at him.

Fu Shiwu took a swimming class when he was young and went back to the pool every summer. He moved lightly across the water and chased to Tang Xuhai’s side.

“What are you doing here?” Tang Xuhai was astounded: “Your hands are wounded, they’re all wet now!”

“I’m fine.” Fu Shiwu pursed his lower lip: “They’ll heal soon. The skin around the wounds has almost come back.”

“Still, you can’t have them soaked.” Tang Xu got a tad worried.

“I have to help you.” Fu Shiwu said with a serious tone: “I can’t just watch you being looked down upon.”

Suddenly, this simple sentence moved Tang Xuhai’s heart, and for a moment, a wave of tangled feelings overwhelmed him.

While he was growing up, his mother was always occupied with work. She generously gave him large sums of pocket money and sheltered him with a well-off life but never cared about the sorts of relationships he made, and neither did she pay much attention to him playing truant and getting into fights outside.

Since he fought so fiercely, naturally, many came to provoke him. Some of them did look down on him because they were older and had better physiques. During the many times that he got home with injuries all over his body, he always handled them by himself.

But by the time he became a soldier and tagged along with his comrades, actually, he was the only one to sneer at others.

As such, until now, there had never been someone who said that they couldn’t just watch him being looked down upon.

The corner of Tang Xuhai’s mouth twitched slightly, and he wondered whether he should laugh, cry, or get angry.

“Considering your current state, let me just take your kindness.”

“Don’t underestimate me.” Fu Shiwu was unyielding.

Grasping the steel pole in his hand, he dived into the water.

Afraid that he would be injured, Tang Xuhai also dived into the water quickly.

Both of them had good lung capacity, and very soon, they swam to the side of the big fish.

The moment they reached the bottom of the lake, the two could clearly see the huge snakehead.

This fish was curvy and long, with fine scales on its body, thorns on its back and abdomen, coupled with sharp canines in its mouth.

Fu Shiwu’s knowledge of this fish was limited to the fact that it was carnivorous, and its meat was very delicious. Because this creature also ate fish itself, it should be very feral.

Talking about dealing with a fish underwater, it was actually not a favourable environment for the two of them.

The snakehead swung its tail and bolted towards the two of them like a sharp arrow.

However, Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai were no ordinary people. If this fish was a special ability creature, they might be a little bit hesitant; but this was just a mutated fish that couldn’t possibly pose a threat to two men who had gone through many battles.

Tang Xuhai grinned and the steel pole in his hand rapidly changed shape, with spikes densely poking out all over its surface. If the snakehead got hit by this, it could only either die or be seriously hurt.

The snakehead made a sharp turn, spun around and charged towards Fu Shiwu. Fu Shiwu’s movement was even nimbler; he simply whisked his body’s angle and raised the steel pole at a tricky slant, aiming towards the snakehead’s gills.

When the snakehead rushed past, the huge impact caused the gill on its left half to completely flick open.

The excruciating pain made the snakehead tumble around, and its fierce nature surged to its peak. The creature had a big mouth with razor-sharp teeth, and with half of its gills burst open, it now looked both vicious and terrifying.

The snakehead swam to Tang Xuhai’s side and slammed him with its tail. If such a large fish tail smashed someone, it was likely enough to damage his internal organs.

Regretfully, the snakehead wasn’t facing any ordinary man, but Tang Xuhai, one that was well-versed in combat and now gifted with a metal-type ability.

Facing this heavy blow, Tang Xuhai remained totally undaunted. His power rose and the metal pole in his hand swiftly transformed into a sharp spike, which menacingly greeted the creature heads-on.

As the snakehead’s tail was punctured, the force of recoil made Tang Xuhai back a few steps.

Fu Shiwu seized the opportunity to raise his steel pole and thrust it into the giant fish’s head.

The snakehead’s body still struggled for some time under conditioned reflexes, then Tang Xuhai let go and it slowly sank to the bottom of the lake. Fu Shiwu also let go to not be dragged down by its weight.

By this point, they had reached a spot where the water was relatively deep, and the two of them had been holding their breath all this while.

A chain of air bubbles escaped Fu Shiwu’s lips, and the sunlight of the high noon shined through the water, making Fu Shiwu look incredibly fair.

Tang Xuhai shook his arms a little and stared at Fu Shiwu without blinking at all.

Fu Shiwu’s usual coldness due to his glasses seemed to have lost its effect underwater. Right now, in front of Tang Xuhai was a beautiful face adorned with a pair of deep-black, gleaming eyes. He was clad in a green plaid shirt, black trousers yet bare feet, his hair swaying seamlessly with the waves. As the rays of light were refracted by the water, the turquoise and blue hues of the lake from near and far molded into a dreamlike scene, as though everything was a prominent European painting.

“?” Seeing Tang Xuhai stop moving, Fu Shiwu shook his arm slightly. Fu Shiwu’s lung capacity was pretty good, and the duration at which he could hold his breath had been refined through experience, yet even after such a long time, Tang Xuhai was still not yet suffocated. It seemed that he was also a skilful swimmer.

Being wobbled by the other, Tang Xuhai coughed up a large air bubble and hurriedly paddled through the water, desperately heading upstream.

Upon seeing this, Fu Shiwu knew that Tang Xuhai had choked on water, and very quickly, he also swam towards the surface of the lake.

The translator has something to say: Well, it seems that a certain someone is heading down a path of no return… ( ̄□ ̄;)
