Chapter 7

The spine-chilling experience in the afternoon made Fu Shiwu very hungry. Paying no mind to taking a shower or even changing clothes, he headed straight to the kitchen to tear up two packets of instant noodles, added two eggs, and gulped down the whole bowl while it was still steaming hot.

After taking a shower and changing into a light-coloured striped shirt, Fu Shiwu left his apartment again.

He cautiously walked around Green T-Shirt on the ground and pressed the electric bell at Tang Xuhai’s unit.

At this moment, Tang Xuhai was applying an ice pack to his right calf. Hearing the doorbell rang, he stood up, stomped his right leg on the ground for a second, and walked to the door as though it was nothing.

“What are you here for?” Seeing Fu Shiwu looking back at the corpse from time to time, he asked grumpily: “Are you really that wimpy? He’s dead, it’s not like his corpse will suddenly jump up.”

It was of course impossible for ordinary people to feel the same as a man who had been through many battles. Perhaps Fu Shiwu thought the dead were terrifying, but Tang Xuhai thought the living were the ones they should really be careful about.

Tang Xuhai’s words almost choked Fu Shiwu. He tried to press down the fear that lingered behind his back and said: “Thank you for saving me just now…”

“If you come just to say thank you, you don’t have to.” Tang Xuhai slightly raised his eyebrows. With an excessively relaxed posture, he leaned to the side and even pressed one arm against the door frame: “Let’s just see it as my commitment to ‘doing one good deed everyday’.”

Fu Shiwu resisted the urge to frown: “…Anyway, thank you. Besides…” He took a deep breath and finished the remaining words: “I think we should deal with the corpse, else what if someone opens their door and gets scared by it?”

Saying so, Fu Shiwu took another deep breath and the bloody stench floating around almost had him throwing up.

“Do you think everyone is a coward like you?” Tang Xuhai gritted his teeth and muttered in a low voice: “Are you too free?”

Not a single person came out even during the huge commotion just now. Everyone knew they had their own life to keep.

“We can’t just leave him there. The weather is extremely hot now so the corpse will rot fast. If we don’t bother, it might cause a plague.” Fu Shiwu insisted, then his resolution sank slightly: “Not to mention this man came here because of me…”

“Oh, aren’t you a responsible one?” Tang Xuhai raised his eyes lazily: “Then you go and clean up by yourself.”

Fu Shiwu was lost for words, a rage starting to bubble inside him. If he actually dared to move the corpse by himself, would he have come to find this guy whom he always had trouble with?!

What a mean bastard. He clearly knows.

Tang Xuhai looked at Fu Shiwu’s struggling expression with immense interest.

Fu Shiwu stood there wrestling with his internal thoughts for a long time, and eventually, he said: “Please help me move it.”

Tang Xuhai said as his mouth curled up into a wicked smirk: “Beg me, and I’ll go with you.”

Fu Shiwu had to hold back his rage until his face turned all red, and he stared at Tang Xuhai through the glasses with sharp, angry eyes.

Tang Xuhai of course wasn’t appalled by those piercing eyes that looked as though they came from a painting. He even leaned against the door and shook his legs leisurely.

Fu Shiwu gasped for a moment and said miserably: “…Please.”

Tang Xuhai was incredibly amused and decided to accept this ‘begging’. He stood up straight and closed the door behind, then walked over to move the body with Fu Shiwu.

“Where are you going to move this corspe to?” Tang Xuhai asked.

“20th floor.” Fu Shiwu hesitated for a bit, then said: “The people on that floor should all be dead. As long as no one goes there, they won’t be scared.”

“Uhm.” Tang Xuhai declined to give any comment.

He picked up the corpse’s shoulders and let Fu Shiwu pick up the legs, then the two of them took the emergency exit.

“Have you ever thought about how many people in this building are lying dead in places your eyes can’t see?” Tang Xuhai’s forehead was drenched in sweat, but his voice remained remarkably calm.

Fu Shiwu, who was walking in the front and couldn’t see his current state, replied: “According to this person, there should be quite a few of them.”

“Then you think you can prevent all the corpses from rotting and breeding a plague just by cleaning up this corpse?” Tang Xuhai said.

Fu Shiwu paused for a second: “I don’t know, I can only take care of the things that are in front of my eyes.” Tang Xuhai didn’t say another word, then the two slowly lifted the body up to the 20th floor and placed it in the garbage chute that Fu Shiwu discovered earlier.

“This moment of peace that we’re having is all fake.” Tang Xuhai raised his eyebrows at Fu Shiwu.

Fu Shiwu turned away in frustration.

Tang Xuhai walked slowly downstairs and found Fu Shiwu waiting for him at the entrance of the emergency exit.

As Tang Xuhai casted him a questioning look, Fu Shiwu said in a low voice: “Thank you for everything today.” Then he turned around and ran back to his home.

Seeing him escape faster than a rabbit, Tang Xuhai was flabbergasted: “These educated people…” So much courtesy, huh?

He shook his head and went home, took out some ice cubes from the refrigerator and put them in an ice bag to continue applying them to his right calf.

The next day, Wang Ziping and Liao Ke came to find Fu Shiwu at the door.

They both had injures all over their body.

“How do you know I live here?” Fu Shiwu was surprised.

Fu Shiwu rarely had people coming to his place and he greeted them the two visitors anxiously.

“You don’t need to get busy.” Wang Ziping’s face was still very pale.

“How are you? Yesterday the person said you weren’t injured, so we didn’t come to see you.” Liao Ke had fewer injuries on him, so that down jacket had surely been proven useful.

“I’m fine. I almost got killed but luckily Tang Xuhai saved me.” Fu Shiwu said with a tinge of fear still hanging in his tone.

Wang Ziping nodded. He actually didn’t come up just to see Fu Shiwu: “I’m checking on the residents in our building, do you want to go together?”

He and Liao Ke had also dealt with the other men’s corpses, but they placed them on the 3rd floor instead. Wang Ziping found it hard to stay calm upon finding out that Guan Liangbi wasn’t the worst thing that happened here.

Throughout the night, he carried out house-to-house inspection to discover that among those five men, only Camouflage Vest was the actual resident of the building, while the other four were his acquaintances. Camouflage Vest wasn’t a good man in the first place. He dealt with financial credit — or to put it bluntly, he was a loan shark, and the other four men were debt collectors working under him.

On the day of the incident, somehow they all gathered here and were trapped in this building.

“We can’t let just let such a huge risk linger in this building!” Wang Ziping was obviously irritated and he blatantly put all the residents under suspicion. “Who knows what else is waiting to stab us in the back?!”

“Yes!” Liao Ke also gritted his teeth: “We want to ensure that this building is cleared of any possible danger! “

Pushing his glasses up, Fu Shiwu frowned: “……Is it necessary? Earlier, didn’t you think of escaping this building from the 3rd floor?”

Wang Ziping sneered: “It won’t get better even if we leave this building. Did you watch the news yesterday?”

Fu Shiwu nodded.

“So you also know that it’s a mess outside. When I said we should get out, I just wanted to ensure that we have access in and out of this place. It doesn’t mean that we have to get out of here and move to other places. Which place is safer than home? Even though the main gate on the 1st floor is blocked, there are security nets on the 2nd and 3rd floor, that is our best protection.” Liao Ke said.

Fu Shiwu remained silent.

“But there are so many dead bodies in this building…” He said hesitantly.

“That’s easy to handle, we can contact the government and ask them to remove the corpses.” Wang Ziping said as-a-matter-of-factly.

Fu Shiwu didn’t think it was that simple. Now even the guards outside had been called out to the streets to maintain the order. When would someone be able to come here to clean up the corpses?

Fu Shiwu turned down Wang Ziping’s invitation. He only plucked up the courage to pick up the watermelon knife at that time due to a brief moment of boiling hatred. Fu Shiwu felt that he wasn’t fit to offer himself the role of managing this whole building like Wang Ziping.

Wang Ziping wasn’t disappointed when he was rejected. Fu Shiwu was still too weak anyway. If it weren’t for Tang Xuhai declining their offer, he wouldn’t have called upon Fu Shiwu.

No matter where or when it was, there would always be people fighting to emerge as the leader. Fu Shiwu closed the door and sighed.

Wang Ziping’s investigation wasn’t useless. At least he found out that apart from the 3rd floor which had been murdered by Guan Liangbi, there were also the 20th and 27th floors that were taken over by Camouflage Vest’ gang. On the 23rd floor, men and old people were dead, while the women were badly hurt.

In Camouflage Vest’s home on the 15th floor, they found a large amount of jewelry and cash.

But Guan Liangbi wasn’t found, and it remained unknown where he was hiding.

As Fu Shiwu had expected, Wang Ziping tried to contact relevant departments to report their situation but the lines were all busy and he couldn’t get through any of them.

On the 7th night, the red clouds suddenly disappeared.

The entire Internet erupted in joy. People celebrated that this unfortunate astronomical phenomenon was finally over!

In these short seven days, the number of people who perished under the red clouds’ pollutants accounted for 12% of the world’s population, a figure that had everyone petrified.

However, no effective treatment had been found to cure the sick ones that were still alive.

But now that the phenomenon was over, the nightmare would eventually pass.

Just when Fu Shiwu breathed out a sigh of relief and thought that someone would finally deal with the dead bodies in their building — because to be honest, the smell was unbearable — another unexpected thing happened.

The water in the pipe had gone bad!

Naturally, because the red clouds had polluted the air, the rain that was brought down here would be contaminated. Also, the reservoir had its surface exposed to the air for a long time and hence was directly polluted!

People who drank the water inevitably developed a high fever, vomiting and diarrhea.

Luckily, by this time, medical research had proven that this disease was caused by pollutants entering the human body, but it wasn’t infectious. Wearing a gas mask and drinking mineral water or purified water would certainly prevent the pollutants from coming in.

People all over the world were immediately relieved as soon as the research was published.

In Heavenly Gardens, where Fu Shiwu lived, people once again gathered on the 3rd floor. The rooms here were full of dead bodies, but they had to pass through these rooms in order to get out.

Not every family had installed a water purifier, and those who depended on bottled water had long run out of their supply.
