Chapter 5

This situation really made people go mad!

Quarantine with warnings and being trapped without a care were two different things. Soon enough, someone went berserk and smashed the building’s main door in an attempt to knock it open.

But the door was sealed tightly outside. Without professional tools, it was impossible to break open from inside.

Safety nets were even installed on the balconies of the 1st floor and 2nd floor. If it was before, the residents would be so happy to have these sturdy nets, but now they became utterly distressed.

“Let’s go out from the 3rd floor! We can try the 3rd floor window!” Someone said.

So the group of panicked people swarmed to the 3rd floor.

But when they reached the floor, a horrifying sight awaited them. Blood was splattered everywhere, people were lying in the corridor and several doors were left open. They were all dead, while the murderer was calmly standing beside their corpses, his hand clutching a machete that was still dripping blood.

Fu Shiwu stood far away, but with a glance he could recognise that it was the person who was shouting like a madman just now.

At this very moment, he wasn’t making any noise, but his crazily calm face crept people out even more.

“This… Is this all your doing?” The person who proposed to climb down through the window on the 3rd floor asked with a trembling voice.

“They hide sick people in their home, so don’t blame me for being rude to them.” The man said.

“Guan Liangbi, are you crazy?!” A person who knew him cried out in disbelief: “There is no need to kill everyone!”

“Sooner or later they will become zombies, and zombies can eat people.” Guan Liangbi said with a serious expression.

“You’ve got to be kidding me…” The man was speechless, did he kill people for this reason?

“I know that there are still other sick people in this building. If the families honestly hand those people over, I won’t hurt them.” Guan Liangbi said as he revealed a menacing, insane smile.

“Hand those people over? For what?… Do you still want to kill more?” The man exclaimed, unable to hide the shock in his voice.

“I do it for everyone’s safety.” He looked at the man puzzlingly, as if he didn’t understand what was wrong: “This way, we won’t be bitten by the zombies.”

“You are crazy! None of us will become zombies!” The person who proposed to climb the window couldn’t hold himself back anymore and screamed at him: “They are just sick!”

“I know! They’ll become zombies after they have a fever, so kill them when they haven’t become zombies. If they’re already dead, it’s also okay, we only need to cut up the corpses!” Guan Liangbi declared as though making a solemn vow: “Rest assured that I will guarantee everyone’s safety, as long as you cooperate nicely with me. “

Who dared to cooperate with him!

This was obviously a lunatic engulfed in his own delusions!

Even back in 2012, when it was widely rumoured that the world was coming to an end, there were no lunatics blatantly murdering people. Who would have thought that there was now one right in their building!

All the more, even if zombies were prevalent in novels and TV series these days, normal people wouldn’t think that the unknown disease was a zombie virus. If it were such a thing, the hospitals would have fallen by now!

Facing such a mentally deranged nutjob, these unarmed people wouldn’t dare to take the risk and could only choose to retreat for now.

“Go back to your own house.” The person who previously called out Guan Liangbi’s name said: “Ask someone to lock the door and watch it, then all the men should get your weapon ready. A kitchen knife or metal stick will do, we must keep Guan Liangbi under control!”

Such a large ticking bomb, which informed no one when it might explode, could endanger anyone’s life at any point now.

When Fu Shiwu got home, he looked around for a handy weapon but the best he could find was a watermelon knife from the kitchen. After waving the knife a few times and casting a quick glance at his fragile arms and legs, Fu Shiwu still mustered the courage to head out.

He didn’t dare to take the elevator at this moment. Those people just now had scattered to different floors to head back to their home, so who knew when they would return to the 3rd floor!

Holding his breath, Fu Shiwu carefully walked down to the 3rd floor and looked out from the emergency exit, but he didn’t see Guan Liangbi.

Having no idea where the man was, Fu Shiwu didn’t have the nerve to go into the 3rd floor’s corridor all by himself and could only head back.

Most people would feel safer when a mentally deranged killer was conspicuously running around, for at least they could see him. Now that the killer was nowhere in sight, people would be scared stiff.

As fear crept up inside and his nerves stretched to the extreme, Fu Shiwu’s heartbeat sped up and his breathing quickened, so much so that even he could hear his own heavy pants.

There was no one in the stairs, but he felt as if a ghost was chasing behind him, forcing him to walk faster.

“Why is there only you here?” A voice suddenly came.

“Ah!” Fu Shiwu exclaimed.

“What are you so surprised for?!” The man said grimly.

“So it’s you.” Fu Shiwu casted an exhausted look at the man. It was the person who initially proposed to climb the window.

“Only you are here? Where are the others?” The man was carrying a long metal stick with a fruit knife tied at the top.

“I don’t know, I haven’t seen anyone else.” Fu Shiwu wiped his sweat.

“A bunch of cowards! Of course they won’t have the guts to come out.” The man cursed, then said disdainfully: “Let’s go by ourselves!”

“Just the two of us? I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Fu Shiwu only dared to turn up with this watermelon knife because he had thought that it would be safe with many people here. If he had known that there would be only two persons, with his weak strength, he wouldn’t have plucked up the courage to come out. “Should we find a few more people?”

The man thought for a moment and agreed: “Let’s go find some more people!”

“I’m Wang Ziping and I live on the 7th floor. What’s your name?” He asked as they headed upstairs.

“Fu Shiwu, 18th floor.” Fu Shiwu followed closely behind him.

“I know that the person who called out that crazy man’s name just now lives here. I think the other people are all scared, but that person perhaps can do this.” Wang Ziping led him into the floor.

Arriving at a door, Wang Ziping rang the doorbell.

“Who’s there?” A vigilant voice came from inside.

“It’s me, Wang Ziping on the 7th floor.” Wang Ziping said.

The anti-theft lock was unhinged and the door opened.

The man was wearing a helmet and a down jacket, as if it’s not hot enough outside!

“What did you come here for?” The man poked his head out and glanced through the corridor.

“It’s been a while yet no one has turned up, so I thought you don’t dare to go anymore.” Wang Ziping looked at his ‘accessories’ and nodded: “This is good, at least you can have some protection.”

“I was busy looking for my crossbow!” The man said grimly.

“You can shoot arrows?” Wang Ziping’s eyes lit up.

“No, it’s part of my collection, but I should be able to shoot him if I take some aim.” The man raised the crossbow in his hand.

The small crossbow had been mounted, its sharp arrow gleaming with a cold light.

“Isn’t this illegal?” Wang Ziping said thoughtfully: “The arrowhead has even been sharpened.”

“It’s a passion of mine.” The man turned to warn the people inside the house to lock the door, then said: “Let’s go.”

The man who was amply protected and armed with a crossbow now turned around and found Fu Shiwu, who was holding a watermelon knife while wearing a white shirt and suit pants.

“Geez! You scared me. Why are you quiet?!” The man rolled his eyes.

Fu Shiwu felt slightly wronged. Was his presence so insignificant?

But Fu Shiwu didn’t know how to soothe the frightened soul of the other person, so he could only stare through his glasses and try to apologise with his eyes.

However, the move seemed to have little effect, and the man actually turned his eyes away, not daring to look at Fu Shiwu any further.

Wang Ziping didn’t give them any time to properly communicate and introduce themselves. He simply pointed at the other man: “Fu Shiwu, this is Liao Ke. Let’s go.”

“What are we in a hurry for? Are there only three of us?” Liao Ke quickly took a few steps to follow behind Wang Ziping.

“I don’t know, I only see Fu Shiwu at the moment.” Wang Ziping took the lead and walked towards the emergency exit.

“Didn’t you see Guan Liangbi?” Leaving the air-conditioned corridor, Liao Ke shed even more sweats in his down jacket.

“No. Something seems wrong.” Wang Ziping said. Logically speaking, there were hundreds of people in their building, so it would be impossible to expect that only three of them had the courage to hunt down this lunatic, right?

Wang Ziping swiftly glanced back at Fu Shiwu, and Fu Shiwu looked back at him with a calm, indifferent and calculating expression.

He seems to have some guts, just that he’s a bit thin. Wang Ziping muttered to himself.

As the three of them were heading for the floor below, they heard a loud thudding sound of people running upstairs.

“Who’s down there?” Wang Ziping cried out as he looked over the handrail.

“Hey! What if it’s Guan Liangbi?” Liao Ke said anxiously.

Fu Shiwu clenched the watermelon knife firmly.

“It’s me. There are five people on our side, we’re looking for the crazy man just now.” A voice came.

Wang Ziping let out a sigh of relief, then smiled: “I knew there wouldn’t be just these few of us.”

“Come up here, we’re looking for him too!” Liao Ke shouted.

A moment later, five people with metal sticks or knives in their hands walked up, led by a man who was in his thirties and clad in a camouflage vest.

“Have you seen the crazy man?” He frowned. “We’ve searched down there and didn’t find him.”

“We didn’t see him either.” Wang Ziping said.

“We’ve already looked at the lower floors and were planning to go up.” Camouflage Vest looked up at the three of them and suggested: “It’s just nice that we found you here. Let’s split into two groups.”

Wang Ziping studied the five people opposite him. His group only had three people, not to mention that there was Fu Shiwu, who, at first glance, didn’t seem like he could fight much.

He couldn’t help but say: “That’s fine, but we have fewer people here, can you send one from your team here?”

Camouflage Vest hesitated for a moment, then turned around to briefly look at the men behind him. One of the men at the back said immediately: “I’ll go.”

Camouflage Vest gestured in agreement: “Okay, you go.”

The man squeezed over and stood with Fu Shiwu’s group.

Wang Ziping looked at Camouflage Vest and said kindly: “Then we’ll go look on floor 20 and above, you look on floor 10 to 19.” The

Camouflage Vest nodded cheerfully: “Okay.”

The two sides parted ways and Fu Shiwu’s group continued to head upstairs. The new man was wearing a big green t-shirt and already feeling terribly hot as sweats drenched him from head to toe, thus seeing Liao Ke wearing a down jacket made it even more unbearable.

“Let’s take the elevator.” Green T-Shirt suggested.

“No, you can’t take the elevator.” No one knew which floor Guan Liangbi was on now, so if the elevator door opened and he was right outside, they would be in danger.

“It’s better to take the elevator, else we’ll waste lots of energy just to climb to the 20th floor. Then how can we catch that crazy man when we find him?” Green T-Shirt said as-a-matter-of-factly.

Wang Ziping hesitated: “This…”

Fu Shiwu thought about this for a second, then looked at the man. It indeed sounded reasonable.

“Besides, that crazy man has only himself. There are more than a dozen floors above us so the chance of meeting him is less than one in ten.” Green T-Shirt continued to push for his idea.

“I don’t agree. Who knows if we will meet by chance?” Liao Ke said hoarsely. Among everyone here, he was feeling the hottest, but he was also the cautious type who would be unwilling to take even a risk that carried a one-in-ten chance.

Wang Ziping decided to firm up his shaking attitude just now: “Let’s take the stairs.”

“I won’t take the stairs, it’s too hot!” Unable to convince the others, Green T-Shirt was obviously annoyed: “If you have no guts, just stay home! I’ll take the elevator by myself!”

He turned around and entered the corridor.

“Hey hey hey!” Wang Ziping called after him but he didn’t stop.

“Leave him alone!” Liao Ke said angrily.

“We cannot, he’s also a kind man.” Wang Ziping looked at Liao Ke with reluctance, then he turned to Fu Shiwu and proposed another idea: “Or you can take the elevator with him.”

This person is too thin, he probably will be half dead just climbing the stairs. Besides, their luck shouldn’t be that bad, right…

Fu Shiwu wavered for a second, then he nodded and headed into the corridor to run after Green T-Shirt.
