Chapter 47

With a loud cheer, the men rushed into the rice fields like hungry tigers chasing after their prey. Having no tools, they directly grabbed the rice with their bare hands.

They weren’t the only ones who stopped to collect food. The other teams couldn’t help it either and one by one, they braked their cars behind.

If Wang Ziping was a charismatic leader who could make his followers listen to him, perhaps there would be no issues with them stopping here to collect some food. Unfortunately, with their increased strength, some mutants in the team wanted to compete with him for power, so Wang Ziping’s reputation had begun to decline by this point. These people let their greed take the upper hand and failed to take it back it time, ultimately harming others as well as themselves.

Fu Shiwu and the others weren’t aware of the misery of the people behind them. They just drove towards the goal according to their predetermined plan.

“How far is it until the turn?” Tang Xuhai asked.

“Wait a bit, I’m looking into it.” Miao Jia said as he looked down at the laptop screen.

Wang Ziping thought that there was only one highway outside Yun City, so it was out of his expectation that Tang Xuhai decided to take the provincial road instead. In Huaxia, where highways were prevalent now, most people would choose to take the highway and very few would embark on the national road. Even fewer would bother using the provincial road.

They probably would just waste fuel!

Even if Wang Ziping knew Tang Xuhai’s plan, he still had to consider whether this whole effort was actually worth risking his life for.

Miao Jia’s pupils reflected the green patterns on the satellite map. On the real-time map, finding the most convenient road was a test of eyesight.

“Found it!” Miao Jia exclaimed with excitement: “As we pass this mountain, there’ll be a turn that heads downward, take that turn!”

Tang Xuhai nodded silently, and Fu Shiwu couldn’t help asking: “Xuhai, how about I help you take the wheel for a while?”

Tang Xuhai looked back at him and said: “Not for now. You can replace me on the wheel when we go through the alien wave.” Seeing Fu Shiwu nod in agreement, Tang Xuhai added: “Now you should take some time to rest first.”

Looking at Tang Xuhai’s resolute eyes, Fu Shiwu hesitated for a moment, then he simply leaned back on the chair and closed his eyes. He even reached out to level the angle of the seat.

Because the interior of the SUV had been modified by Tang Xuhai, the space between the seats was now much larger.

While Fu Shiwu closed his eyes and took a nap, Tang Xuhai passed the mountain and drove down a small turn.

This road wasn’t paved with asphalt but just cement, making it the most basic type of road. Nowadays, such roads only appeared in villages and counties.

The national road was easy to take, but the prosperous cities on its sides would attract most of the aliens. It was better to take this difficult road. Although the bumps consumed fuel, Tang Xuhai was confident that the gasoline he prepared was enough for their usage, otherwise, he could still find ways to replenish it in the midst of their trip. Now some villages also had private gas stations, but most of them were relatively hidden and probably disguised as something else, so people who weren’t from there might have a hard time finding it.

Fu Shiwu’s body swayed slightly due to the bumpy road. He was in a state of half-asleep and half-awake. With the conditions they were in, it was challenging to bring himself to sleep.

He directly rid himself of his consciousness and tried to get into deep sleep.

As Fu Shiwu’s consciousness slowly faded, he no longer cared about the shaking of the car, both his breathing and heartbeat slowing down.

He thought he would fall asleep, but strangely, he entered a state of emptiness.

Fu Shiwu’s brain was blank and the feeling of detachment from his own self came back once again.

But different from the tension he used to create when he first deliberately tried to enter this state, this time, the atmosphere was calm and gentle, and even the people sitting in the back seat and next to him didn’t notice it.

Fu Shiwu felt that the current state was very comfortable. Convinced that he could get enough rest even if he didn’t sleep, he just stayed like this for a while.

He watched everything around him with the peak of all his senses. As the modified car moved forward slowly, Fu Shiwu raised his vision and everything in front was advancing in his mind like a movie screen, making him almost drown in the scene.

As it was just after midsummer now, the weather was getting cooler and a gust of wind was blowing over the treetops of the mountains and the forests, creating crisp yet pleasant sounds of “whoosh whoosh”. A clear stream that came from the mountain was drifting along the road, its surface reflecting the sparkling sunlight.

It’s so beautiful, Fu Shiwu comfortably heaved a sigh of relief. He hadn’t felt this relaxed for a long time.

But it was a pity that this moment of peace was soon broken. As a feeling of uneasiness surged from within, Fu Shiwu woke up entirely.

“There’s something in front!” Fu Shiwu sat up suddenly.

Tang Xuhai was taken aback and stared at him with puzzlement: “Did you have a nightmare?”

Fu Shiwu shook his head solemnly: “I feel that there’s something dangerous in front of us.”

Miao Jia listened and said enthusiastically: “Fu ge, I didn’t expect you to have a sixth sense. Do you still believe this stuff?”

Tang Xuhai glared at Miao Jia and slowly stopped the car: “I believe it too.”

Sometimes he also had a kind of strange intuition, and it usually was quite accurate.

Fu Shiwu cast him a grateful look, pushed the door open and walked out. Seeing that the car in front had stopped, the two cars behind had also hit the brakes, then Huo Enting and Hollande straightaway got out of the cars.

“What’s the matter?” Huo Enting asked Tang Xuhai, but his eyes were on Fu Shiwu, who was standing beside Tang Xuhai with a serious expression.

“There seems to be something ahead.” Tang Xuhai didn’t say much, turned his head and said to Fu Shiwu: “I’ll go have a look.”

“I’ll go with you.” Fu Shiwu insisted. Since Hollande had also walked over, Fu Shiwu wouldn’t want to expose too much: “I have a gun, so it’ll be a bit safer if I come along.”

Tang Xuhai hesitated for a moment and finally said: “Okay, you come with me.” He turned to Huo Enting and Hollande and said: “The two of you are temporarily responsible for our safety, pay attention to the surroundings!”

Tang Xuhai directly gave the order, leaving no room for discussion. Interestingly, Huo Enting and Hollande followed it without any question.

Fu Shiwu squatted down to re-tie the laces on his field boots, then he stood up and said to Tang Xuhai with a firm tone: “Let’s go.”

Seeing him getting ready so carefully, Tang Xuhai couldn’t help but check his clothes before stretching out his hands to grab the duo swords he kept below the steering wheel.

As Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai walked forward side by side, Tang Xuhai felt a little incredulous. Just a few months ago, Fu Shiwu was a white-collar elite with not even enough strength to restrain a chicken, but now he was walking by Tang Xuhai’s side with a pistol in his hands.

After such a short time, that weak and flimsy look of his had disappeared without a trace. Although Fu Shiwu still looked thin, he no longer gave out a vulnerable aura.

As these thoughts lingered in Tang Xuhai’s mind, his eyes remained completely alert of the surroundings.

After a while, Fu Shiwu finally seemed to detect something from his vague sense of uneasiness. He slowly came to a stop and looked towards a slope next to the road: “Over there…”

Before he even finished saying, under the slope, a large patch of grass suddenly trembled violently and an earth-shattering “moo —” pierced through the air.

“This is bad!” Fu Shiwu was distressed that he still lacked the experience to approach the target without provoking it.

“Get to the side!” Tang Xuhai’s expression shook and his whole body flew up!

A giant brown ox rushed towards them from below the slope. Fu Shiwu was aware that he should dodge, but his body couldn’t act as fast as his mind and was half a beat slow.

Tang Xuhai leapt high into the air and watched Fu Shiwu steadily duck to the side. In his eyes, Fu Shiwu moved fast enough, but the giant ox moved even faster!

“Moo —” The ox’s roar was so loud it almost ruptured their eardrums. Its horns rubbed across Fu Shiwu’s side as it rapidly charged in their direction.

Fu Shiwu lost his balance and slumped heavily to the ground. Not daring to stop, he continued rolling on the ground for a few more rounds before getting up.

Tang Xuhai breathed a sigh of relief, stomped on a tree next to the road and recoiled back.

Fu Shiwu firmly knelt on the ground, raised his pistol with both hands and fired.

“Bang!” With the crisp sound of the gun, one horn on the giant ox’s head broke off. Triggered by this damage, the creature became even more ferocious, its eyes turning completely red and its hoofs scratching the ground ragingly.

Fu Shiwu’s eyes lit up as he pointed the muzzle downwards and fired the second shot.

“Moo…!!!” The giant ox growled fiercely and smashed its huge hoofs into the ground.

As the hoofs banged into the ground, a crack quickly appeared and the cement floor broke open, sending large pieces of broken cement splashing out like water!

“F**k!” Tang Xuhai cursed and immediately braked his body, barely avoiding a large slab of cement that was flying his way.

Seeing his bullet stuck in the cement, Fu Shiwu was dazed for a second, then he quickly stood up and ran back.

They never thought that the first thing they would encounter after leaving Yun City was a special ability animal, an earth-type giant ox!

The creature nodded in satisfaction, lowered his head and rushed towards Tang Xuhai with its curved horns pointing upwards.

This giant ox, which seemed to weigh no less than one ton, must have immeasurable strength. If it attacked them head-on, even Tang Xuhai’s steel-bone right leg would be easily bent, let alone the fragile organs inside.

Wen Zhaoming’s expression changed as he turned around to urge Huo Enting: “Huo Enting, go call Ma Dong, ask him to turn this piece of concrete into sand!”

With an utterly anxious expression, Huo Enting ran back quickly and called Ma Dong over.

Although Ma Dong’s face was as white as a sheet, he wasn’t scared off. He took a few steps forward and stared at the ground at peak concentration. The cement floor slowly split and became sandy, spreading towards Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai.

“Damn!” Tang Xuhai gritted his teeth, pulled back his duo swords and jumped away from the spot. Was this really an ox? It ran faster than a lightning bolt!

“Bang bang bang!” Standing not far away from them, Fu Shiwu fired three shots in a row, all of which nicely hit the ox’s lowered head.

But before the two could rejoice, the three bullets carved three deep pits into the giant ox’s head, causing it to moo even more angrily.

Tang Xuhai’s expression twisted with displease. Even the Ox King 1A fictional character from the 16th century novel Journey to the West. He is a demon king based in Sky Scraping Cave and a major antagonist in the novel.wouldn’t have a tougher head than this ox?!

Fu Shiwu was surprised, but he didn’t panic. He calmly thought about this for a second. If bullets didn’t work, then just punch it!

Following the roar of the giant ox, the ground in front of Fu Shiwu began to crack. Seeing that the situation wasn’t good, he swiftly ran in another direction.

“Fu ge! Hai ge! Get back here!” Miao Jia’s voice came from a distance.

Fu Shiwu lamented inwardly. How could he get back when a giant ox was chasing right behind his ass?

Tang Xuhai turned around and cast a brief glance at the sand that was coming their way, and he understood at once. His field boots rubbed heavily against the concrete floor as he rushed towards the giant ox.

Luckily for them, this ox wasn’t very smart and could only use its special ability while standing still. It didn’t know how to run and cast its ability at the same time, otherwise Fu Shiwu would be in grave danger.

“Ha —” Tang Xuhai yelled as he savagely threw out the two swords in his hands and stabbed the giant ox on the back.

As the giant ox groaned in pain, the cement slabs flying behind Fu Shiwu immediately came to a stop. The giant ox turned around, staring at Tang Xuhai with bloodshot eyes.

“Big idiot, come here!” Tang Xuhai flicked his finger provocatively.

“Moo —” No one knew if the ox actually understood Tang Xuhai’s provocation, but it bolted towards Tang Xuhai without any slightest hesitation.

  • Looks like they're gonna have some oxtail and other noms! The special ability users might get buffed eating that.

But domesticating these things... Maybe theres an ability user that can take?... Hmm let the natives creatures rise up and kick the snot out of those aliens!

Rice processing is interesting, googled about it and discovered that rice process has a high loss rate, it takes a lot of work to get that grain we take for granted. So I'm wondering if anyone in that other group knows about it?, If not they should google it!

Now that ox would be perfect for the water user to try kill... Create a bubble of water that. Engulfs its head... Or cause a stroke...
