Chapter 45

Damn brat! You dare to escape from training! Open your eyes and see how I’m gonna set you right!

Tang Xuhai snarled in his heart and walked away before Miao Jia noticed his presence.

Of course he knew exactly what Miao Jia was planning!

Tang Xuhai had previously told Miao Jia that when there was time, he would help Miao Jia train some skills. The moment Tang Xuhai asked him how his combat and marksmanship skills were, Miao Jia started stuttering. Of course, Tang Xuhai could bring out the truth with just one simple test, so Miao Jia had to tell him the truth in earnest.

Tang Xuhai’s face immediately turned blue and he made it clear that he would train Miao Jia fiercely.

If Miao Jia hadn’t graduated from a police academy, he might not be subjected to this treatment. But now, even if he cried his heart out and begged for mercy, Tang Xuhai wouldn’t let him off at all.

This brat was apparently good at sucking up and digging out the right opportunities during hard times, so he certainly had seen that Tang Xuhai and Fu Shiwu were relatively close and decided to hug Fu Shiwu’s thigh. He didn’t have the nerves to directly ask for any favour from Tang Xuhai. Rather, he chose a much more roundabout way.

By giving his gun and bullets directly to Fu Shiwu, wouldn’t he be able to skip one more practice? Aren’t you smart, kiddo?

Tang Xuhai didn’t actually plan to be as cruel as he claimed to. If Miao Jia’s marksmanship was really so terrible, the gun could indeed be temporarily handed to someone who needed it more. They could certainly wait until they reached the military district, where they would have better conditions to go through proper training. Say, if Miao Jia didn’t want to practise any gun or long-range weapon, he could still train in close combat and improve his overall physique, no?!

In short, Miao Jia tried to gain an advantage but actually ended up worse off. Later, Tang Xuhai would make him a supremely big satellite dish and use the excuse of ‘helping him to enhance his laptop’ to lure him into some hellish training. Just so you wait!

As Tang Xuhai stayed on the wheel, Fu Shiwu sat in the passenger seat while Wen Zhaoming and Miao Jia sat behind. The other seven people split into two cars, and the group was ready to leave the warehouse via the main gate.

Miao Jia wasn’t there when the introduction was made, so he was very curious now.

He asked: “Wen ge, by what criteria did you recruit these people? I understand that you’re looking for a water-type ability user to fetch water, but why a person with sand attribute?”

Wen Zhaoming was speechless. What ‘water-type ability user to fetch water’?!

Hearing Miao Jia’s nonsensical question, Wen Zhaoming didn’t know whether he should laugh or cry, and neither did he know how to answer.

Tang Xuhai interrupted them: “Don’t talk for now. If there’s anything, save it for later.”

Miao Jia was most afraid of him now and immediately shut up. Fu Shiwu cast a funny look at him through the rearview mirror, then he glanced at Tang Xuhai.

Miao Jia thought he had successfully ‘bought’ Fu Shiwu, but in fact, he caught a miserable fate of having to go through some brutal training in the future. Thinking of this, Fu Shiwu couldn’t help but slightly raise his lips.

The corner of Tang Xuhai’s mouth also twitched, then he turned to look at the front with full concentration.

“Huh, what happened to the people outside?” Miao Jia’s surprised voice came.

The other three people looked out the car window.

They parked their SUV in the military parking lot inside the central warehouse, so when they left, naturally they would have to go through the warehouse’s main path. On both sides of the path were rows of warehouses, where people were packing things in panic. Meanwhile, some people were bringing their vehicles over, making the crowds even messier.

Wen Zhaoming frowned: “Is it because our new recruits leaked the news when they went back to pack their things?”

If this was the case, then it would be his fault for not knowing them well enough.

“Not necessarily, since the commander told us, he would likely also inform other people.” Tang Xuhai said nonchalantly: “Everybody knows they can only wait for death if they stay here. There may be a chance if they leave now. And if some of them leave, it can also reduce the burden on the army.”

The people in the car were all silent.

A moment later, Fu Shiwu said: “Shall we talk to the army about the current situation?”

Tang Xuhai turned to look at his wary face and paused for a second before finally saying: “They must know better than us.”

Miao Jia said: “Yeah, Fu ge, don’t worry, there are satellite images. If I can see the aliens moving along the route, someone will communicate the same thing to the soldiers.”

Fu Shiwu let out a quiet sigh. It must be the case, else Commander Wang wouldn’t have asked us to leave so soon.

“I’m just worried about how long these people can hold off without weapons and ammunition.” Fu Shiwu said with a heavy heart: “Why can’t we all go together?”

“They’re soldiers. Obeying orders is their honourable duty, even if they know what is awaiting them. Without order, they won’t take even one step back.” Tang Xuhai said with an indifferent tone.

Hearing his deep voice, Fu Shiwu turned around to look at him. Tang Xuhai was carrying a blank expression.

With quite a number of people, the moving speed of all the vehicles inevitably slowed down. Fu Shiwu caught sight of Wang Ziping urging his family to get in the car. Seeing Fu Shiwu, the man was astounded for a second, then he turned back to urge the others even harder.

Fu Shiwu’s brows furrowed in discontent. He began to ponder about Wang Ziping still having access to so much information. In such an urgent state, who else was he planning to depend on?

The modified car drove to the central warehouse’s gate. The original fortification had been moved to the sides, while a new one had been built a short distance away from the entrance. Just like what they often saw on the TV, it was made with several layers of wire mesh entwining around wooden fences.

At this time, seeing a vehicle going out, the soldier on duty didn’t ask anything and walked over to silently push away the wooden fences.

Looking at these silent soldiers, Fu Shiwu felt his heart deeply moved. Tang Xuhai gave the soldier a salute.

The soldier’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, then he returned a salute and stood aside.

“Don’t look back.” Tang Xuhai said to Fu Shiwu, who was almost turning his head. “Be prepared. It’s dangerous outside, always pay attention!”

“Uhm!” Fu Shiwu nodded solemnly and sat up straight.

Leaving the central warehouse meant they really left the last place they were familiar with. From this moment on, they were going into the unknown, a new state of nature that had undergone many changes following the apocalypse. Apart from facing waves of aliens, they might encounter animals and plants that had mutated or developed special abilities.

With Tang Xuhai’s group being the first team to leave the seemingly reliable fortress of the central warehouse, shortly afterwards, other teams hurriedly left the harbour that had protected them all this while.

“Miao Jia, always pay attention to the situation ahead!” Tang Xuhai cast a sharp glance at Miao Jia through the rearview mirror.

Miao Jia felt his skin tighten and his scalp go numb, then he replied: “Yes! Hai ge!”

He knew what kind of burden he was shouldering now. In short, he was their pair of eyes that were watching from the air!

Miao Jia’s fingers quickly danced on the laptop, and through the satellite antenna, he retrieved images from the satellites orbiting nearest to the Earth surface.

“Found them!” Miao Jia exclaimed aloud, and even Wen Zhaoming sitting next to him couldn’t help but lean over to peek at the screen.

The screen was continuously zoomed in over and over, and soon a bird’s-eye view of Yun City appeared. Miao Jia quickly moved the display position to the eastern suburbs. Although there was a slight delay, it was still enough to help detect any movements.

“Only some scattered aliens are active, and there seems to be no incoming alien wave!” Miao Jia reported.

“Very good!” Tang Xuhai replied in a low voice: “Take notice of any large waves of aliens. We don’t need to care about the scattered ones.”

“Understood!” Miao Jia replied solemnly: “Until we leave the main road of Yun City suburbs, there won’t be any major alien waves. Judging from our current speed, the earliest time that we’ll come into contact with one is 20 hours later!”

Tang Xuhai nodded. Without saying another word, he focused all his attention on the wheel.

Miao Jia breathed a sigh of relief and set their car as the central point on the positioning map. Thereafter, he assigned any fast-moving objects or alien waves as alert targets. As long as these targets approached them, an alarm would sound.

He kept his eyes coming back to the screen from time to time. Now that he had time, his inquiring mind came up again: “Wen ge, tell me a bit more, why did you find someone with a sand attribute?” “

He was very curious about this. He could understand the uses for water-type and wood-type abilities. One was for their water needs and the other was for their food needs. But what could a sand-attribute person do? Say, take down a sandstorm? But that seems too far-fetched!

Wen Zhaoming looked at him in utter silence. This kiddo really hadn’t given up yet!

“Don’t underestimate the sand attribute. Sand can be very useful sometimes.” Wen Zhaoming said with a grave expression: “Quicksand can silently swallow any life, making it difficult for others to guard against. If an alien steps on quicksand, it can only sink and suffocate.”

Miao Jia was stunned: “Oh! Quicksand! There’s this trick! I thought he would just throw sand at the opponent’s eyes while fighting!”

Wen Zhaoming seriously felt the need to facepalm.

“How about the other four mutants? Tell me.” Miao Jia asked interestedly.

“The other four mutants also have their own strengths. Liu Zhao and Wu Shan run fast and have enough guts to fight with the aliens in close range. They can kill a few aliens when they cooperate. Hollande is good at archery, he has a crossbow at his manoeuvre. Wang Dan is a freelance women’s kickboxing coach. She said she worked in the sports club where I learnt kickboxing for a period of time. That club has really high standards.”

“A women’s kickboxing coach?” Miao Jia swallowed hard.

But soon, he didn’t have the mind to be flabbergasted at this female warrior any more, for the moment the car crossed the border between Yun City’s urban and rural areas, entering his eyes were dazzlingly golden rice fields on both sides of the road!

  • There's a lot more applications.

If you've ever watched avatar the last airbender the animated series (not that gross live action) you can see a number of ways various elements can be used effectively in combat.

Water feels particularly OP, the aliens bleed, they're prolly made of water themselves right?, So just think of the carnage water element can do.

One of the reasons Diarrhea is deadly is because of dehydration, so imagine if that water user is able, to absorb/pull/drain water from there bodies? Blood...make it clot, instant heart attack/stroke... What about drowning them? Increase secretions in their airway? Wouldn't take much either... Water can cut through so many things... It's got so many applications, it's a medium of transmitting poisons/diseases imagine if humans found a poison that could be delivered to them in mist or rain etc...

    • True, true! Plus water benders/users can also help with transportation depending on their strength. Imagine: You're riding a boat a top a river that you created, swiftly avoiding aliens because they can't breathe underwater and likely can't catch up. Plus if you manage to condense water enough it 'freezes'/becomes a solid aka ice. And as we all know, Ice is pretty op.

    • Water type is really kinda OP but authors of apocalyptic stories(well BL lol) sometimes forgot about it and just use them as utility ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Blood bending(base from avatar) is particularly the most convenient for me cuz it can work like puppetry

    • HI descoded, thank you for checking out this novel too ^^~ Hope to see your support in future chapters!
