Chapter 44

Although Fu Shiwu nodded at Tang Xuhai with such conviction, the moment Tang Xuhai started pushing him towards the seven people who had been successfully persuaded by Wen Zhaoming, Fu Shiwu’s heart was drumming.

Since young, Fu Shiwu really hadn’t faced anyone as a leader.

Fu Shiwu silently took a deep breath, carefully recalled his previous director’s manners and tried to put up a similar look.

Tang Xuhai suddenly felt Fu Shiwu’s body under his arms going soft and swaying left and right.

Looking at the guy, Tang Xuhai felt a bit 囧. Fu Shiwu was… swinging, no? What was he doing?

He lightly poked Fu Shiwu on the back, quickly walked to his side and whispered: “What are you doing?”

“I’m imitating my director.” Fu Shiwu looked at him in puzzlement: “Didn’t you ask me to do this?”

Tang Xuhai scattered the black cloud1This thing you often see in manga/anime lol. around Fu Shiwu’s head, feeling a bit annoyed yet also funny at the same time: “You have no reason to imitate him! To be yourself is already enough.”

Fu Shiwu didn’t fully understand what he meant, but under Tang Xuhai’s urging eyes, he gave up his plan to learn from the director.

“Uhm.” Fu Shiwu nodded and walked over in his normal demeanour.

Wen Zhaoming had already approached these people, intending to introduce both parties. As Fu Shiwu walked up to them, he couldn’t help but feel nervous, his lips tightly pressed, his eyes cold and his facial expression even scarier than usual.

Looking at Fu Shiwu wearing that icy cold aura that screamed ‘Don’t you dare come close to me’, Wen Zhaoming silently gave a thumbs up in his heart.

Wen Zhaoming was the person who persuaded them, while Tang Xuhai would lead these people into battle in the future, so it would do no good for him to stay impersonal. Fu Shiwu was the best choice to become these people’s strong foothold, yet at the same time he could place a golden headband2In the classic Chinese novel Journey To The West, Tang Sanzang placed an enchanted golden headband on Sun Wukong, or the Monkey King, to keep him in control. on them, so that it wouldn’t be difficult to keep them in control in the long run.

If their leader was only an ordinary man, these mutants and ability users wouldn’t full-heartedly follow. But Fu Shiwu was different. Fu Shiwu might have his own value as a sharpshooter, but it was his powerful aura that made his bearing very clear to others. This was the exact thing that would make people subconsciously step down in fright.

That was happening right down. After Tang Xuhai deliberately took one step behind, Wen Zhaoming solemnly introduced him to the new recruits. These people began to guess who this thin-looking man might be and how he could make the other two ability users treat him with so much respect.

Fu Shiwu nodded indifferently and lowered his hands. In fact, he didn’t know what to say yet and silently looked at the seven people in front of him.

His eyes swept past each of them as he recalled Wen Zhaoming’s introduction of the person in his mind.

The three abilitiy users were Huo Enting, water-type, Ma Dong, earth-type with sand attribute, and Liu Peiqi, wood-type. The four mutants consisted of three men and one woman, and one of the three men was a foreigner. These four were Liu Zhao, Wu Shan, Hollande and Wang Dan.

As Fu Shiwu studied them quietly, his silence suddenly made the atmosphere in this small space a bit heavier.

Tang Xuhai gently cleared his throat and motioned to Fu Shiwu to say something.

Fu Shiwu thought for a moment, then he spoke, his tone extremely firm: “Since you’re standing here, it means that we all have a common goal. That is to live and to get to a safe place. I won’t say anything else, only a small request.” As Fu Shiwu reached this point, his tone became even sterner: “I hope that from now on, you won’t hide anything that would pose problems to the team. Any order that will help a member or the team as a whole should be carried out without any negligence. Are we all clear?”

As Fu Shiwu’s gaze swept across them, the seven people shuddered and involuntarily said in unison: “Yes!”

The moment Fu Shiwu finished what he had to say, Tang Xuhai was scared that the atmosphere would fall quiet again, so he stepped forward and said: “Let’s get ready. We’ll leave the warehouse in an hour. If any of you has a car, bring it here. If you can’t drive, later we can see which car has vacancies for you to jump on.”

Some of them nodded, while some shook their heads. Tang Xuhai could only sigh inwardly upon seeing this messy response. After all, none of them ever had formal training.

“Now let’s disperse! We’ll gather in 50 minutes!” With a solemn expression, Tang Xuhai stood in a military posture and roared at the top of his lungs.

The seven people hesitated a bit and looked at each other, then they started to disperse. Some of them also came here by car, but it had always been kept in the parking lot at the entrance of the warehouse. No one knew if it could still be used now.

Meanwhile, some of them hadn’t even packed their luggage yet and had to hurry back now.

“These guys aren’t even as efficient as Shiwu back then.” Tang Xuhai shook his head exaggeratedly.

“You’d better be satisfied. After all, they were just ordinary people before. That’s already quite efficient of them.” Wen Zhaoming approached on his electric wheelchair.

“Zhaoming, what should we do about your wheelchair? If we’re on the road later, there’s no way to charge it.” Fu Shiwu frowned worriedly.

Wen Zhaoming smiled lightly and said with his usual gentle manner: “Don’t worry, Miao Jia has a small solar charging panel which he got from the police logistics to charge his laptop. The battery that the young soldier helped me fix earlier contains an electric board, so Miao Jia’s charging panel should be enough for it.”

“That’s good to hear.” Fu Shiwu said assuredly.

“Miao Jia has gotten a lot of things, but they’re all electronic equipment. I’ve asked him to move them over and put in our car. Our car is larger now, there’s still lots of space.” Tang Xuhai said.

Wen Zhaoming nodded: “Although it was us who took the initiative to recruit these seven people, don’t have too much trust in them before fully knowing their character. When we leave, the four of us will take one car and they’ll follow at the back.”

“I don’t think they’ll want to go in front either.” Tang Xuhai snorted, then he turned to Fu Shiwu and said: “Your speech just now was good. I thought you would be stiff and unable to say a word. I was actually prepared to come to your rescue in case you completely freeze.”

Fu Shiwu shot him an unhappy glare. Wasn’t it you who urged me? Evil!

Wen Zhaoming also expressed his compliment: “It’s correct for you to directly ask them to follow the order. What I’m most afraid of is that these people won’t listen and act rashly.”

Fu Shiwu looked at the two and pursed his lips: “I’m now thinking of you two. One had a bad cold but didn’t say a word about it and just straightaway collapsed! The other always acts all brave and never listens. Both of you should be disciplined strictly!” [T/N: Hohoho, good job, little Fu ( ̄▽ ̄).]

Wen Zhaoming and Tang Xuhai never expected that Fu Shiwu would suddenly bring them into the spotlight and was immediately choked.

Fu Shiwu glared at them: “You two, don’t commit those things again!”

Not knowing whether they should laugh or cry, Tang Xuhai and Wen Zhaoming opted to nod again and again, hoping that Fu Shiwu wouldn’t hold on to this ‘black history’ of theirs forever.

Huo Enting, the water-type ability user, then drove a high-performance car over. Although his car chassis wasn’t high, which made it unable to pass through difficult terrains, it shouldn’t have any issues on the concrete road. The foreign man, Hollande, also drove one. His car looked like a commercial vehicle for office use and was able to take in five people.

Because they were about to set off, Tang Xuhai didn’t have time to help modify the two cars. If they indeed encountered something, their SUV should be the first to absorb the damage. Hopefully, the two cars behind should be fine.

Miao Jia came back with something that looked like an umbrella frame.

Miao Jia climbed up the car door and placed the umbrella frame-like thing on the shelf above the rear compartment. Because there were so many things to carry, Tang Xuhai deliberately made a two-layer shelf above the rear compartment to increase the space.

“What is this?” Fu Shiwu asked with curiosity.

“A satellite antenna. Without this thing, we can’t accept satellite signals on the road.” Miao Jia replied concisely. Then he said in his sweet-talking tone: “Fu ge~ When you have time, could you help me talk to Hai ge? Ask him to make a large satellite dish so the signal is better.”

“Why don’t you ask him yourself?” Fu Shiwu asked with puzzlement.

“Ai~ Hai ge is always so fierce whenever he sees me. I don’t dare to.” A flash of light flickered in Miao Jia’s eyes as he put up a pitiful face.

He reached into the bag behind him and took out a pistol and a large box of ammunition.

“Fu ge, this is for you. Consider it as my thanks for you helping me.” Miao Jia smiled and stuffed the pistol into Fu Shiwu’s hands. “Take it.”

Fu Shiwu glanced at the large box of yellow-orange bullets, then he raised his head and said sternly: “Why do you still have bullets?”

Miao Jia replied without a care: “This is what the police department gave me when I first arrived here. My marksmanship is terrible, I’ll waste these precious bullets. I’m giving them to you.”

“Don’t.” Fu Shiwu raised his hand to block Miao Jia’s push, then he paused for a second before saying: “You can give me half of the bullets, but take this gun back. In such a time, how can you not keep a gun to defend yourself?”

Miao Jia held Fu Shiwu’s hands and said very seriously: “Fu ge, I’m not exaggerating, my marksmanship is really really bad. If it hadn’t been for the teacher to close one eye, I would never have been able to pass the shooting class! It’s a waste to leave these bullets to me! Also, I’ve seen your shooting that day. I think Fu ge’s marksmanship can be even better. The thing that’s restricting you is the gun’s rate of fire. And if the bullet speed can be a little faster, at the point of facing the aliens, you don’t have to spend bullets to lure the aliens into your shooting range. Now that you have two guns in hand, coordinate both hands and you can definitely kill more aliens! “

Fu Shiwu’s heart trembled slightly. To wield both guns at once?

“But…” Fu Shiwu’s eyebrows furrowed as he was still weighing these words.

“Ai! Fu ge!” Miao Jia pushed the fully-loaded gun into Fu Shiwu’s hands with much excitement: “If you can kill more aliens, doesn’t it mean I’ll be subjected to less danger? A background staff like me, who has not even enough power to restrain a chicken, needs the protection of people like you who are fighting at the front. Fu ge, you won’t just watch me die, right?” Miao Jia blinked his eyes enthusiastically.

Fu Shiwu always felt that something didn’t feel right, but he couldn’t quite tell what it was. Indeed, Miao Jia was the youngest of them and should be taken care of. But even if now was a valid time for everyone to feel that their life was always in danger, Miao Jia didn’t need to carry such a flattering attitude, no?

Fu Shiwu’s eyes swept across Miao Jia’s face, then his gaze stopped behind Miao Jia. Standing beside the open car door, Tang Xuhai was giving him an evil smile.

Then he mouthed a “Just take it” to Fu Shiwu.

Fu Shiwu didn’t really understand it, but he decided to listen to Tang Xuhai and nodded at Miao Jia: “Okay…”

“Fu ge! You’re so kind!!!” Miao Jia was so moved he rushed over to hug Fu Shiwu.

As Fu Shiwu was startled by this gesture, from behind, Tang Xuhai’s smile seemed to become even more dangerous.

  • Ooooh Jiaaaaaaa, you better watch out in case drill instructor Tang Xuhai makes you do extra training because he caught you hugging his beloved boss (wife? Husband?)!

  • Jelly Boi... Youngster you've just gained a dangerous subconsciously jealous future rival...lol

I'm glad his ability is being directed in this way, it's got so many applications, the types of ability users
    they have are strong.

I'm very surprised that they let so many leave, especially the special ability users, the more they have the greater their chances of survival. So I'm wondering why they let them go? Perhaps they can't afford a confrontation? Worried it might cause panic? But I don't think so, the leader of that compound seemed to think it was reasonable...as though implying that this place is done, so leave while you can?

I'm also surprised that them leaving didn't cause a ripple effect, people tend to notice changes like that and will greatly magnify any speculations.
    "Why are they leaving?"
"Why are those ability users leaving? Do they know something?"
"Should we leave and follow them?"
If you remember how people reacted to FS and WZ leaving to go outside freaked people out during that alien raid, I'm sure that would only escalate... I'm fairly certain that the ability users that turned down WZ will talk about it...

    • I think that they can't restrain them. They are too powerful to force them to stay. Better to part in good terms.

I also think that they may have those questions but are too afraid to leave that place because they are weak.

  • Oh my god. Oh my GOD. OH! MY! GOD!!!!

Shiwu you cute, adorable, sweet little darling! I can't, I'm dying. How can he be so adorable? I just love him.

But it's nice to see an MC with lacking self-awareness being pushed to be the team leader while being just perfect for that role. Normally the position of leader falls onto the ML. So far I've only read one novel where the "lacking" MC was appointed the leader by the whole team and that was "Reborn Otaku's code of practice for the apocalypse".

Michelle, where do you find those gems? TGL is already incredible, ID is just as good. When I'm finished with this one, it seems I have to start with SU as well, huh? Is is just as good as those two? Come one, give me a hint xD

    • Ahem, I found them at the end of a rainbow next to a pot of gold?

Nah kidding xD I found them at some secluded corners on JJWXC. To be honest, I had to dig pretty deep into JJWXC to locate these, coz I admit I have an overly specific taste when it comes to BL (I actually don't read that many BL in the first place, my taste aligns better with shounen novels ^^).

I'm glad you take a liking to Fu Shiwu. Thanks so much for such hearty, enthusiastic comments, they make me elated all day you know (இ﹏இ`。)

Saving Unpermitted has a much darker tone. It's a post-apocalypse story with a rather long-winded plot that's likely to fry your brain (just like how it fries this translator's brain while she tries to express it in English). Give it a try, who knows what might await? (~ ̄▽ ̄)~

      • I want to, seriously. But seeing as there are "only" 30ish chapters translated, I will have to wait. Reason being: This kitten can't bear to have to stop reading so fast. But since it seems that you'll be stalked/observed followed by me for a longer time, due to ID and TGL, there's no worry of me missing out on it.

Fry my brain? There's nothing much to fry... *cough*

Go on, translate more, delete your real life and glue yourself to the keyboard to translate from morning to evening (yes, this is a JOKE! Don't take that seriously!!), dig more pits for this kitten to drown in! (yes, this last part is me being serious :P) GO GO GO!!!

But thanks for the warning regarding SU... I will have forgotten all about it by the point I'll start reading it, but hey xD

Which reminds me, your taste in novel is absolutely to my liking. Congratulations Michelle, you've gained yourself a brainless fangirl!

    • Hi Can'tnamed, thank you for checking this novel, it seems you've enjoyed it so far, so I'm very glad (‐^▽^‐)Hope to see you in future chapters! <3

    • Hi VoidKnight, thank you for reading too! ^^~ I'm really happy you love the story! Hope to see you around in future chapters.

  • Nooo, I caught up with the current chapters again!  ╥﹏╥ Great job Translator-sama, the reading is pleasant and the sentences are logical (great feeling after reading MTLs)

Thanks for the update and hope you stay safe! (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧
