Chapter 39

Wen Zhaoming waved his hand: “The aliens over here had almost been wiped clean, it should be safe. I’ll rest a bit and look for you later.”

Tang Xuhai raised his lips and didn’t say anything. If Wen Zhaoming had asked either of them to stay behind to protect him, although Tang Xuhai wouldn’t have condemned such a thing, he wouldn’t have felt as much admiration for Wen Zhaoming as now.

Fu Shiwu’s line of thought wasn’t so complicated. Looking at the surroundings, after the three evolved aliens were killed, more than half of the area around here had been cleared by the army, the special operations team and the ability user squad.

Feeling that Wen Zhaoming wouldn’t be in any danger here, Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai rushed towards the other half of the area together.

By this time, nearly an hour had passed since the aliens broke through the sewage manhole, and the heavy rain had finally begun to weaken.

As their vision became clearer, many people noticed that the coordination Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai put on when killing the aliens was surprisingly effective.

The two’s spectacular killing immensely aroused an urge to win in the hearts of those ability users. For a moment, the aura emitted from different types of powers shone brilliantly, almost illuminating the entire central warehouse that was engulfed in the darkness and the heavy rain.

Tang Xuhai took the lead and rushed forward. Whenever he was about to approach an alien, a bullet would fly from behind him. Sometimes this bullet gave him an opening to attack, and sometimes it directly killed the alien.

As the battle gradually approached its end, the sky began to light up and the rain came to a complete stop.

Wen Zhaoming insistently stayed in that corner until Fu Shiwu and Tang Xuhai returned. Only then did they find out that his electric wheelchair’s battery seemed to have broken.

“If I didn’t push you, it wouldn’t break.” Fu Shiwu pushed up his glasses that were now dripping with rainwater and looked at Wen Zhaoming dejectedly.

“If you didn’t push me, I would be dead now.” Wen Zhaoming shook his head and said: “And the battery seems to have been soaked by the rain, so it shouldn’t be because of the fall.”

“I’ll go find someone. We can figure out something for you.” Tang Xuhai Said.

Wen Zhaoming looked the least tattered among the three of them, even though he was dirty from head to toes

The battle outside was over, and there was no need for the three of them to clean the battlefield, so they returned to the warehouse.

The dead people inside their warehouse had been taken away. It was messy everywhere, and even their barricaded room had become shabby after being crushed on by many people.

But luckily, thanks to the surrounding wooden planks, nothing inside was damaged.

After tidying up and changing clothes, Fu Shiwu and Wen Zhaoming lay in their warm sleeping bags and fell asleep at once.

However, Tang Xuhai uncharacteristically tossed around for a long time before he was able to fall asleep.

The aliens could crawl through the sewage to get into the central warehouse. Now this place no longer made him feel secure. How could he fall asleep so easily?

The aliens are becoming increasingly dangerous, Tang Xuhai quietly let out a sigh, where else will be safe in the future?

By the time he got up after a restless sleep, Fu Shiwu and Wen Zhaoming had already left.

After a while, the two came back with steamed buns and water.

“How is it outside?” Tang Xuhai stretched his back up and asked.

“It’s all cleaned up.” Fu Shiwu looked solemn: “A lot of people died. Really a lot.”

“They estimate that last night, more than 3,000 ordinary aliens and nearly 20 evolved aliens sneaked into the central warehouse.” Wen Zhaoming said.

“So many?!” Tang Xuhai said in shock.

“But I actually don’t think this number sounds a lot.” Wen Zhaoming calmly told Tang Xuhai his analysis: “Yun City is a Tier-3 city with a population of nearly one million. After the sky veil opened and the aliens fell down, although the aliens have been constantly being killed, those that survived and accumulated enough energy to evolve may not only be this number.”

Tang Xuhai nodded silently.

Almost two months had passed since the astronomical phenomenon took place. There were nearly 40,000 aliens near Yun City, but only one-tenth of those came last night.

“The central warehouse is in a dangerous state.” Tang Xuhai said sternly.

“Tang Xuhai, don’t blame me for raising this alarm: We must be ready to evacuate from here any time now. Yun City isn’t a place where we can stay anymore.” Wen Zhaoming said solemnly.

“Why?” Fu Shiwu was portioning the food while listening to the two talking, then he brought the food in front of them.

Wen Zhaoming picked up one of the lunch boxes, thanked him softly, then continued: “The army’s ammunition was exhausted last night. Based on my guess, the battalion that went to collect the ammunition had met with danger. The battalion that set off after that will likely face danger too.”

“What?!” Tang Xuhai was taken aback: “You said another battalion has left the central warehouse?!”

“Yes.” Wen Zhaoming nodded: “Even the special operations team was divided into half.”

“Isn’t this asking them to die?!” Tang Xuhai fiercely punched the ground: “There’s no ammunition or heavy firepower, only ordinary soldiers and mutant soldiers who have to travel 250 kilometers away to collect supplies. Is there even a way to come back alive?!” 

Wen Zhaoming was a little puzzled about how Tang Xuhai knew all the details. He even knew the length of their trip.

Then Wen Zhaoming said: “The army has to go, or else we’ll soon be besieged by the aliens.”

Tang Xuhai had an expression of uncertainty. This decision was so reckless it seemed almost absurd. The army was simply exchanging supplies with human lives. But looking at the situation the central warehouse had to face, it seemed that there was no other choice.

“How is the defence at the gate now?” Hearing these things, Tang Xuhai lost his appetite and put down the food that Fu Shiwu had stuffed in his hands.

“Now it is defended by a platoon of soldiers and a team of ability users” Wen Zhaoming continued in a very low voice: “Those ability users seem to be very confident, but what we’re facing is 36,000 aliens. Although we’re staying behind thick walls, there’s no ammunition. Do you think that with only more than 200 soldiers and 100 ability users — half of whom aren’t even reliable — they can still defend this place?”

“I don’t think it’s possible.” Fu Shiwu pushed his glasses up and said frankly.

Tang Xuhai glanced at him, then said to Wen Zhaoming: “Where do you say we should withdraw to?”

Wen Zhaoming hesitated for a moment before saying: “For now, a plan is to go to where there are fewer people. Another plan is to join a higher-rank army that wouldn’t face any ammunition crisis.” 

Tang Xuhai thought for a moment and said: “I understand the second plan. What does the first one mean?”

“The aliens’ main source of food right now is people, so the more people there are, the more we’ll attract them. On the contrary, in a place with a smaller population, the density of aliens seems to be lower.”

These aliens were basically chasing after humans. Wherever humans went, they would too.

Housing tens of thousands of people, the central warehouse was undoubtedly the densest place in Yun City right at this moment. It was no wonder that the aliens desperately wanted to get in here even if they had to suffer lots of casualties from their side.

Wen Zhaoming took a breath and said anxiously: “Since the evolved aliens were able to carry out the first attack last night, they can carry out the second or third attack. We won’t last long.”

Although the sewage pipes inside the central warehouse were now carefully guarded, this wouldn’t stop the aliens from sneaking into this place again. The best way was to block the water pipes entirely, but because of the construction of the wall, all the quick-drying cement and building materials had all been used up.

After listening to Wen Zhaoming’s analysis, Tang Xuhai looked for the platoon commander who was earlier ambushed from mid-air and explained the situation.

The platoon commander said with a wry smile: “It’s not like we aren’t aware of this situation, but the order we received was to guard the central warehouse at all costs. You can withdraw from here, but we can’t.”

“To defend it?” Tang Xuhai was astounded.

“Yes, you just don’t know it. Now there are many Tier-4 cities in H Province that have become the aliens’ active areas, thus turning into forbidden zones for humans. If Yun City also falls, more than half of H Province will fall and humans will become even more passive. As long as we manage to keep it standing, this place will be pivotal. When we can finally launch a counterattack, the position of Yun City will be quite important.”

Tang Xuhai was silent, then he asked: “Looking at where we are now, do you think that humanity will be able to fight back?”

“I believe we will, and I trust you believe it too.” The platoon commander replied.

The platoon commander had made the decision to firmly hold on to this place till the end, even though both of them knew that it was impossible to keep this central warehouse completely safe, even if they had to sacrifice everyone.

Facing such an outcome, Tang Xuhai quietly made preparations and spent the whole day being busy around Wen Zhaoming’s SUV.

As things were being loaded onto the SUV, Wen Zhaoming and Fu Shiwu went to the army’s communication station.

Tang Xuhai had asked someone to repair the electric wheelchair, while the two of them came here to look for the young soldier.

The young soldier seemed to have not been affected by the gloomy undercurrent at all, and was very enthusiastic to help Wen Zhaoming.

“Your battery was submerged in water, then a short circuit occurred. Now I can replace the faulty circuit for you, but this battery’s life has been seriously affected. The power it can hold isn’t even half of its original.” The young soldier said regretfully.

Wen Zhaoming’s face darkened, then he smiled at the young soldier: “Even if that is the case, thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” 

The two walked out of the army camp and gazed at the central warehouse, which looked like it was still the same as yesterday. A complicated emotion surged from inside their heart. How long can this scene last?

Fu Shiwu pushed Wen Zhaoming’s wheelchair and all of a sudden, he slightly tumbled.

“Sorry.” Fu Shiwu apologised, then lowered his head.

He thought that the wheelchair bumped into some stone, but what he saw was a small mound on the ground.

 “?” Fu Shiwu was puzzled: “Wait a minute.”

He squatted down and dug through the cracked concrete floor with his hands.

Underneath, a stubborn weed was growing and pushing through the concrete floor!
