Chapter 33

The vegetables grown by wood-type ability users could be harvested in just a few days, but people only had vegetables and no cooking oil. Eating all sorts of boiled vegetables after so long really had started to feel tasteless.

The amount of rice, noodles and oil that Tang Xuhai brought back wasn’t much, just enough for the three of them to occasionally change their staple and add a bit of oil into their cooking.

But just that small amount was already enough to trigger the others!

It wasn’t the hardship that triggered them, rather, it was the unfairness that they felt when observing Fu Shiwu’s group. Even during an apocalypse, one’s life could be made so complicated due to this sort of assumed unfairness.

These three gangsters had gone through a certain extent of mutation. They seemed to have more solid muscles, increased strength and even thickened courage.

Although a while ago, some ill-intentioned ability users were shot down promptly because they tried to dominate other people, it only deterred these scum gangsters for a short while. Now they were back to cornering people and robbing off them.

Fu Shiwu looked at the three with a blank expression and asked, his tone flat: “So you’re trying to rob our things?”

Ding ge laughed and even replied arrogantly: “No, this isn’t robbery. You’re just amicably sharing your things with other people, aren’t you?”

He turned to look at the bystanders and asked with an intimidating smile: “Who of you here saw the robbery?”

The people around immediately shrank and stepped back, trying hard to hide themselves.

People who had awakened their abilities had long been gathered at another place by the army so that they could be specially provided with sufficient food and maintain their strength to help defend the entire central warehouse. Those who were left here were civilians without abilities.

Some people might have mutated and become stronger, but they were afraid of getting into trouble and didn’t dare to come forward.

Even with Fu Shiwu’s less-than-ideal communication skills, he knew that their act right now was robbery.

His face hardened as his rage surged from within.

Wen Zhaoming said coldly: “What if we refuse?”

Ding ge was taken aback, as if he just saw something so ridiculous it had him astounded. He grinned and said amid his gasp for breath: “Look at you. One is a cripple and one is a weakling, and you still want to resist?”

One of the underlings walked towards Wen Zhaoming: “Then I’ll give you a valuable lesson, so that you can understand what it means to be aware of your own position!”

The underling completely looked down on Wen Zhaoming at the entrance, directly aiming a kick at his legs!

A bright light flashed in Wen Zhaoming’s eyes. After his legs were gone, he couldn’t stand the sympathetic look that other people gave him, so naturally, he also detested a contemptuous or discriminatory look from anyone. This act of the underling was extremely insulting and angered Wen Zhaoming right on the spot.

“Puff!” A big fireball suddenly appeared, sending the underling to kick straight into the fire while Wen Zhaoming moved his electric wheelchair back by half a meter.

Fu Shiwu hurriedly retreated to barely avoid being hit by the wheelchair.

The fireball instantly burnt a big hole in Underling No. 1’s leather pants. He let out a loud scream, shocking the people nearby.

“A fire-type ability user!” Someone in the crowd reacted very fast and immediately shouted.

Underling No. 2 quickly pulled away Underling No. 1, but the fire on his feet was still burning.

Ding ge disgruntledly reacted and grabbed the water bottle of the family next door, splashing it on his feet in a flash.

But such a little amount of water couldn’t extinguish an ability user’s fireball, so Underling No. 2 rapidly rushed over to beg Wen Zhaoming for mercy.

“Sir, the three of us were blind and offended you. Please forgive him, we won’t dare to do anything after this!”

“Ah ah ah!” Underling No. 1 shrieked as he flapped his hands frantically at the fire. He cried out: “I was in the wrong! Da ge1大哥, lit. translated as ‘big brother’, is often used as a way to refer to either: 1) Your actual, blood-related big brother, 2) The leader in your group or 3) A male friend who may or may not be older than you, especially in a joking manner. In the context of this chapter, ‘da ge’ is used to refer to (2)., please save me!”

Ding ge was the most cunning of them all. Being reminded by Underling No. 2’s words, he immediately turned over a new leaf and even patted Underling No. 1’s head: “It’s useless to beg me! From today, this is your da ge. Quickly bow down to your new da ge, beg him to spare your pathetic life.”

Underling No. 1 was so scared by the burn that his head became blank. He couldn’t even think about how the fire just kept staying at his ankle without spreading out.

With a loud thud, he knelt down on the ground and implored Wen Zhaoming: “Da ge, da ge! Please spare me, I will be your dog in the future!”

“I couldn’t care less about having an underling like you.” Wen Zhaoming sneered icily and waved his hand, putting off the fire instantly. He said sternly: “Get out of my sight, quick!”

As though receiving a huge pardon, Ding ge hurriedly grabbed Underling No. 1 together with Underling No. 2, carrying him away and escaping at once.

“Hahaha, they deserve it!!”

“This is so funny!!”

“Woof woof woof!!” Even the puppy came to join in the fun.

Seeing that Wen Zhaoming wasn’t in a good mood, Fu Shiwu pressed one hand on his shoulder and said thoughtfully: “Zhaoming, are you okay?”

Wen Zhaoming reluctantly raised the corner of his mouth and said: “I’m okay.”

Saying so, he moved his electric wheelchair to the corner of their barricaded room, avoiding all the eyes staring at him.

Those eyes looked at him with surprise, wonder and even pity.

Someone even started discussing loudly with the person next to him: “Hey, I didn’t expect that there’s an ability user in our warehouse!”

“Yes, those who had a fever earlier were taken away for focused treatment, but they all developed special abilities and never came back. I didn’t expect to see an ability user with my own eyes at such a close distance!”

“Have you seen it just now, where did the fire come from? ?”

“How can I know? If I know, why would I still need to stay here?!”

“But it’s a pity that this person is disabled…”

“Yes, maybe it’s due to that reason that he’s still here….”

“If he can’t walk, can’t fight and can’t defend, what’s the point of having a special ability? He might as well give it to me! At least I can use it to exchange for nice meals everyday.”

“Look at you bluffing! Maybe when the time comes you’ll be the fastest to hide. You don’t look like you have such guts!”

“Ahahaha…”

Such gossip was both sweet, sour and full of jealousy, all of them aiming at Wen Zhaoming, causing his heart to ache and grieve at the same time.

Those people were right, What is the use of giving special abilities to a man who can’t even walk? He was a cripple who couldn’t do anything.

“Shut up! Whoever dares to make noise, I’ll send you to the defence line so you can better spend all that spare energy of yours!” Fu Shiwu said grimly, his fierce eyes sweeping across everyone like an arrow.

His excessively sharp aura and crushing gaze had everyone freeze on the spot. All the gossipers  immediately closed their mouths, and the whole place became so eerily silent that even the drop of a needle could be heard.

Fu Shiwu’s looked from left to right with a cold expression. Everyone turned their eyes away, afraid to look at him.

“I repeat, the defence line doesn’t require special abilities, even ordinary people are also welcome to help transport ammunition. If you want to contribute your energy, I don’t mind helping you through the back door! Then you can eat and drink all you want!”

The suffocating silence continued for a long moment and no one dared to mutter a word.

Fu Shiwu snorted coldly, then turned around and walked into the room.

Only when he was gone that the pressure in the air was lifted. Those people finally dared to wipe the sweat on their heads, but the fear was still lingering in their hearts.

What was that man? He didn’t seem to be significant before, but he was so scary just now!

The people mumbled in their hearts but didn’t have the nerve to say anything out loud. Those three men seemed to have some say over the army, and no one here wanted to face those terrifying aliens.

Fu Shiwu walked to Wen Zhaoming, who looked up at him with a complicated gaze.

“They are just jealous, don’t bother about them.” Fu Shiwu’s coldness vapourised as he tried his best to search for the right words to comfort Wen Zhaoming.

Wen Zhaoming smiled: “You’re right. If they really want to eat and drink so badly, they can help transport ammunition. If they don’t dare to go, it’s their own problem.”

Fu Shiwu blinked and said shyly: “Yesterday, when I went to charge your battery, the young soldier told me that because a platoon is busy with getting more ammunition supplies, there isn’t enough manpower to transport ammunition. He has helped us a lot, so I actually want to help him find people for the job.”

Wen Zhaoming looked at him blankly for a moment, then let out a gleeful laugh.

Fu Shiwu didn’t quite understand why, but seeing Wen Zhaoming no longer disheartened, he also returned a smile.

In the evening, Tang Xuhai came back covered in dust, his face totally pale. He walked in a hurry, and wherever he passed by, the crowds instantly dispersed.

Tang Xuhai paid no attention to the people living near their room. He entered the room, sat down, held up the water jug and downed the water decisively.

“How’s everything?” Fu Shiwu briefly glanced at him and found that he seemed very uneasy. He had never seen Tang Xuhai in such a state before: “What happened?”

“We’ve bad news.” Tang Xuhai wiped his mouth and sighed.

Wen Zhaoming also moved the electric wheelchair to turn around and face him.

“The aliens have evolved.” Tang Xuhai said in a low voice.

“What do you mean?” Fu Shiwu blinked puzzledly.

Wen Zhaoming thought for a second, then his face immediately turned white: “You mean the aliens have also undergone the same changes as humans?!”

If this was the case, it would be the biggest catastrophe for humanity!

“Today I met one in the garment factory.” Tang Xuhai recalled and said: “Its speed, strength, dexterity and reaction are all better than ordinary aliens. It even has the ability to eject its tube. That tube from its mouthparts is as powerful as a bullet and can directly penetrate the skull.”

  • These aliens aren't impressive, I don't understand why they do things old school.

If they need brains why aren't they farming humans? Is it only humans? Or will any primate do?

Why be so wasteful with their troops? Makes no sense, did they come from a different dimension? UFOs were mentioned so I thought that meant they had space ships.

Are these aliens just the grunts? cannon fodder? Is there a higher alien group that rules over them? This kind of invasion makes no sense

    • Perhaps the sky veil phenomena that killed a bunch of people was their way of harvesting food? Like, they'll just eat all the dead bodies but then they found out that humans cremated all the 'infected' bodies therefore they went feral and started attacking living beings?

Also, guessing from the fact that there's no meat supply as of now and we've yet to see another animal other than the doggo mentioned in this- it's likely the aliens eat all brains.

    • I always picture them like a virus. They don't do anything to 'make sense' they just do anything to replicate. Some virus are stupid like that, it's too powerful it kill off the host too fast the host can't infect others. For example, ebola is a 'stupid' virus while the flu is an 'intelligent' one.

    • Hi Chaku,

Thank you for checking out this novel.

In any case, while I appreciate the insightful comments you've been making across various chapters, I'm a tad confused as to whether I, the translator, am meant to answer your questions, because you're not exactly addressing anyone.

That aside, I'm also in no position to justify to you why the author decides to write certain things in certain ways. For that, perhaps dropping the author a mail might help ^^ I might also suggest that you read a bit more to find out the answers to some of your questions.

The main point I would like to express is that, while I do see some of the intentions behind your comments, I can't help but point out that they may tend to provoke unhealthy arguments or elicit not-so-positive reactions from the people who read the comments (I won't lie, I'm one of those people). As I strive to build a positive space here for my readers and visitors, it would be great if you pay a tad more attention to the tone you're using ^_^.

Once again, I thank you for checking out this novel. Please take care, and wishing you a happy life ahead.

      • It's a comment wondering about the authors intent

I tend to post what I think at the time, it's a good way for me to keep certain story points clear.

I often question why, why have an invasion this way, what is the goal, what direction is this going.

I think what I said are valid points, as a reader I look for motive. I've been reading a lot of hfy (humanity FK yeah) stories, they come from the perspective that rather than being a weak species, humans are portrayed as very strong and scary.

There are elements of that in this story, often times I'm left wondering what direction is this story going.

I wondered why the troops of aliens were such hunter gatherers, UFOs were mentioned so I thought space aliens, advanced tech alien superior intellect etc, why send troops when orbital bombardment is more effective, why use a non infectious bioweapon? Thats if my assumption was correct that these are a higher advanced alien species.

But it seems that they aren't, or perhaps they are? these aliens are possibly preparation before the real invasion force or maybe these are dimensional traveling aliens, there is much to wonder...

The truth will come to light but speculating what may come or why these aliens are like this is a question I'm asking and know will be addressed as I read further.
