Chapter 27

Their car moved quickly along the main road, and Tang Xuhai said to the other two: “To save ammunition, the army only puts two heavy machine guns on top of the fortification as firepower. Beyond that fortification, there’re soldiers on defence. We’ll enter from the side, wait for a while and follow along the fortification. I’ll slow down the car, then Fu Shiwu, you come and stop the car. Remember, you must control the car to lie along with the fortification, then use this car to shield yourself. If you can attack, attack, if you can’t attack, protect yourself!”

Fu Shiwu nodded nervously: “I know.”

Wen Zhaoming swallowed hard and said: “Understood.”

The scene of the accident that was transformed into a temporary fortification had stood firm for six days and six nights. For humans, this was already an incredible achievement.

In the first few days, the army suffered heavy casualties, but when someone in the army first manifested his special ability, the pressure of the battle had been enormously reduced. Originally, with the shortage of ammunition, this battalion had decided to retreat to the central warehouse in the eastern suburb. But the moment a group of soldiers suddenly became powerful, the batallion was equipped with endless strength. With combat knives and temporarily modified cold weapons in their hands, these soldiers held up the defence line for another three days.

The two machine guns fired from different directions, and the mutant soldiers on both sides of the fortification were responsible for those aliens that slipped through the net.

Although these dozens of mutated soldiers suddenly became extremely strong, they weren’t iron walls. Naturally, they would be injured and exhausted, and after several rotations, the defending soldiers had almost entirely faltered.

But at this moment, a black off-road car appeared right in the middle of the crossfire!

Inevitably, the commander on the fortification became anxious. Most of the private cars immediately turned back as soon as they reached this spot and caught sight of the battlefield between humans and aliens — But how many of them actually got out of here alive was difficult to tell. A small number of them chose to stay so they could be sheltered by the army, but in the end they couldn’t survive the battlefield.

Passing through the battlefield between two active sides was simply a crazy thing to do.

Because even if inside that car were civilians, the army couldn’t stop their fire and wait for the car to pass through, then open fire again. If that happened, not only the civilians might not be saved, but also their defence might be destroyed. Keeping the fire was cruel, but none of these soldiers would be foolish enough to not do it.

The commander thought that this was another tragedy of moths flying into the fire, but he didn’t expect that the car didn’t hit the crossfire, rather, it went along the blind spot, and after that, an amazing scene took place.

The car door opened, and a man in a tactical uniform leapt out. After a few rolls on the ground, he jumped at the aliens who were pouncing on him.

The mutant soldiers thought that they were already strong, but when compared with the man that just appeared, they were nothing. Under his strikes, the aliens seemed to have no power at all. They were either slashed in the middle or decapitated on the spot.

Meanwhile, the slowing down off-road car headed straight towards the low fortification made up of various vehicles, then steadily came to a complete stop.

The man in the tactical uniform fought several aliens by himself, but he was no omnipotent god, so he couldn’t stop some aliens from escaping his hands.

The soldiers that were standing above the fortification looked at the aliens that had slipped through the net and thought they must continue fighting, but to everyone’s surprise, a fire wall stood up in front of the black off-road car.

Completely unprepared for such a sudden defence line, the aliens plunged directly into the fire wall.

“Hiss!!!” The aliens screamed excruciatingly. With no hairs or scales at all, their shiny bodies were quickly scorched by the incredibly high heat, turning into brilliant balls of fire.

Fear of fire seemed to be innate for most creatures. The fire wall was blocking the way, disallowing any aliens to cross it. The soldiers defending the area suddenly felt their pressure relieved and took a break to recover their strength.

“That man is amazing.” Leaning on an abandoned car, a soldier watched Tang Xuhai kill the aliens with just a few swings of his arms, his voice drenched with shock and admiration.

“Looking at his moves, he should be from the military.” Another soldier poked his head out and squinted his eyes to watch Tang Xuhai’s moves. “This kind of killing technique is a special martial skill that only Special Forces are allowed to learn.”

“Killing technique?” The other soldier looked at his senior in surprise.

“Of course, these people are trained to perform small-area operations, and even secret missions that no one but only they know about. It’s a given that they have to learn killing techniques.” The senior put up a mysterious expression, trying to show off to his junior who entered the army two years after him.

“In a world like this, will only those who have learnt killing techniques like him be able to shine?” The junior looked at Tang Xuhai enviously. Even mutant soldiers like them were no match for this man.

“Who knows? Maybe, for once in history, these kinds of killing techniques will gradually be taught to everyone.” The senior’s gaze became gloomy: “Not to mention that this takes time to learn. Perhaps one day we’ll be able to develop our own techniques that are as good as his. These damn aliens!”

As the two soldiers discussed Tang Xuhai’s strength, something incredible once again happened at the black off-road car below them. One by one, giant fireballs flew out of the car windows, passing through the fire wall and bolting towards the fast-moving aliens.

A fireball hit the alien and burnt the middle of its body.

The alien paused in its tracks and tried to dodge the fireball, but as though it had grown eyes, the fireball chased after the creature and struck it in one hit.

In an instant, the scream of the alien mixed with the crackle of burning flames pierced the air, and the smell of grilled meat quickly spread around the area, causing the soldiers’ faces to turn as white as a sheet.

“What is that?!” The senior soldier stared at the fire solemnly.

The commander ran over, looked at him and said in disbelief: “Did you see it?!”

“I saw it clearly. The fireball chased after the alien, just like a guided missile.” He said with a grim expression.

“Uhm.” The commander put up a distinct expression, one that couldn’t hide his excitement: “I never thought I would see a special ability user with my own eyes!”

“Commander, is it really so amazing?” The senior soldier smiled bitterly: “Isn’t there news that as long as anyone catches a fever and survives it, it’s very likely that the person will develop special abilities after that?”

“But is there anyone in our battalion that has recovered from the fever?” The commander waved his hand: “I can see this with my own eyes, of course I’m excited. These people are our hope!”. The commander looked at the roof of the off-road car with eagerness and satisfaction.

In just a short while, news that someone with a fire control ability had come to the fortification rippled throughout the battlefield. The soldiers were so thrilled that they rushed to this half of the area to watch this special ability user.

This incident quickly empowered the hearts of these exhausted fighters, enabling them to explode with immense energy, and everyone felt that it would be no problem to fight the aliens for another three days and three nights.

With the heightened spirits of the soldiers, the aliens were wiped out one after another and the fortification, for once, enjoyed a short period of the field being completely clear.

Catching this opportunity, Tang Xuhai retreated towards the SUV with the Duo Dragonbone Swords in his hands.

“How’s everything? You two weren’t hurt, right?” Tang Xuhai’s eyes carefully studied the two of them.

“It’s okay, we didn’t get hurt.” Fu Shiwu shook his head. He turned to look at Wen Zhaoming in the back seat and said: “It’s just that Zhaoming may be a little exhausted.”

Wen Zhaoming leaned back on the back seat with a pale face and smiled bitterly: “This is the first time I’ve used this ability with such a massive force, so I couldn’t control it very well and overexerted myself a bit.”

Tang Xuhai nodded and said: “That’s fine. You’ve got to gauge your own ability, it’s best not to exhaust your strength.”

Wen Zhaoming nodded.

“Are you going to get in the car?” Fu Shiwu asked.

“No, I’ll go up and talk with the soldiers here.” Tang Xuhai said.

Before he could climb onto the cars that had been turned over to form the fortification, a car on the side started shaking.

A moment later, the car was flipped over, then a few soldiers came out and moved the car away.

An officer with a three-star insignia on his shoulder ran out, and as he reached where Tang Xuhai was standing, he raised his hand in a salute.

Tang Xuhai stood up straight and reflexively returned a military salute.

Putting his hand down, the commander smiled: “Just as I guess, you’re a soldier.”

“A retired one.” Tang Xuhai nodded.

“There’s no need for unnecessary greetings, just drive your car in.” The commander nodded and stood to one side, then he asked the soldiers to move the second car a little away: “Move faster. Those aliens may come again any time now.”

“Thank you!” Tang Xuhai nodded at him and got back into the car.

Fu Shiwu had soon climbed into the passenger seat to give him back the driver’s seat.

Tang Xuhai drove the car into the passage between a high wall and the fortified cars, which was only wide enough for one car to pass through at a time.

After they passed, the commander ordered the soldiers to quickly close the opening.

Tang Xuhai breathed a sigh of relief, for he thought that they had to leave the car behind. If they abandoned the car, it would be a bit difficult to carry Wen Zhaoming. Luckly, these soldiers had helped open a gap for them to enter.

Tang Xuhai didn’t park the car near the fortification, but drove a distance to the back to prevent their SUV from getting in the way of the soldiers.

Waiting for the fire to stop, he got out of the car and walked towards the commander, wanting to exchange some information with him.

The commander told him that their current ammunition could still last for a while, and now they were heavily relying on the soldiers whose physical condition had changed.

“Can you show me the person who can control fire?” The commander looked at Tang Xuhai, his eyes burning with enthusiasm.

“Of course, it’s just that this is the first time he’s used this ability, so he’s little out of strength right now.” Tang Xuhai nodded and led the commander to their car.

Fu Shiwu got out of the car out of courtesy, for he felt that he should thank the commander personally.

At this moment, from the high-rise buildings on both sides, the aliens suddenly broke through the glass and flew towards the commander and Tang Xuhai!

These aliens were really smart. They knew that Tang Xuhai was a significant threat whose defence they couldn’t break through, so they tried to siege him from the high-rise buildings, bypassing the fortification on the road to attack directly.

“Careful!!!”

“Commander!!!” Tang Xuhai’s pupils immediately shrank and his mind went blank for a second. He had placed his duo swords under the driver’s seat to take the wheel just now, so he didn’t have them with him at the moment. But subconsciously, he stretched his hand towards the combat knife tied to his leg.

These aliens had been waiting for a long time. As several aliens tightly surrounded them, Tang Xuhai and the commander were left with no way out.

Death was the only outcome.
