Chapter 21

Battles between humans and aliens blew up almost everywhere in the entire Yun City, but most of them ended in the human side losing.

Although humans currently had the upper hand in terms of numbers, the very nature of these aliens made their combat power manyfold stronger than humans.

The situation was completely slanted to one side as any unarmed human would ubdoubtedly perish under the aliens’ hands.

There were about a thousand aliens that descended into Yun City on the first night, and almost the same number of aliens would descend every following day.

With more battles taking place, more aliens emerged yet fewer humans lived. If this continued, humankind would be wiped out sooner or later.

When could humans ever turn this around?

That was the thought that lingered on many people’s minds.

Miao Jia took off his police uniform as the Crime Unit policeman had told him to, but it wasn’t because he wanted to leave it behind, rather, it was because the uniform had been completely soaked in blood.

The armed police and officers who escorted these citizens had all died by now, while the last one standing had terrible marksmanship and looked too young to make anyone feel secure. However, they had gone through half of the journey, so there was no reason to give up at this point.

The remaining people gritted their teeth and continued to advance in the direction of the eastern suburbs, but without the armed police to clear the way, the road seemed to grow longer and longer. They eventually dispersed and made many detours, with only a handful left who still had their mind on reaching the final goal in one straight route.

Miao Jia didn’t choose to take a detour, for he knew that the person who led the way at the beginning absolutely had his reason to go with this straightest route. Although his physical training barely passed and his climbing skill was the bottom of the class, he was at least different from ordinary people who would shrink in fear at the face of a dead end.

Continuing to rise above all the hardships and stay firm on a straight path, Miao Jia took a few people with him to pass through a factory.

At this moment, a shriek suddenly came from behind. Miao Jia was stupefied for a split second, then he shouted: “Run!!!”

The people behind him ran wildly, several of them sprinting past him in the blink of an eye. Miao Jia didn’t have the time to be annoyed and could only swing his arms desperately, but even in such a dangerous time, he wouldn’t let go of the heavy laptop bag on his back.

“Ahhhhh!!!”

One after another, screams came from behind him. Miao Jia didn’t even dare to look back. He had no bullets and no teammates with guns and bullets. At this point, he could only mentally pray for those people, hoping that they could run fast enough.

Miao Jia gasped desperately, his chest burning with pain. His running speed right now was definitely much faster than back when he took his graduation exam.

If the aliens had appeared before the exam, it wouldn’t have been just a passing grade. This hilarious thought flashed through his mind in such a harrowing moment.

But his stamina was still not enough. His knees soon became sore and Miao Jia slumped to the ground.

He froze as the screams behind him disappeared, replaced by the sound of heavy footsteps.

Am I going to die?! Miao Jia was terrified. He was a policeman who should be unafraid of death, but he was actually shaken to the core right now.

A vigorous force grabbed his arm and he almost flew up. “Get behind!” Said a voice.

Miao Jia stumbled forward, catching the glimpse of a few people clad in multi-scale camouflage running past him from the corner of his eye.

He ran a few steps and looked back to see that those people were holding onto some black items and throwing them towards the aliens.

“Boom, boom, boom!!!” One after another, loud explosions ruptured through the air. The huge flames swallowed the three aliens that were chasing after the team.

Miao Jia leaned both hands on his kneeds and panted hard. The flames flashed through his eyes, making them incredibly sore. He closed his eyes and turned away. Not far from the factory gate, a large warehouse was vaguely visible behind a few layer of fences.

Finally arriving at his destination, Miao Jia clutched the laptop bag tightly, laughing as the tears streamed down his face.

The night passed and Yun City welcomed yet another morning.

Tang Xuhai’s biological clock woke him up. He opened his eyes and turned on the light of his watch.

It was 5:30 in the morning.

Fu Shiwu was awakened by the swaying spot of light.

He turned on the flashlight and sat up, the hair on his head curling up disobediently.

“Ha!” Tang Xuhai laughed.

Fu Shiwu blinked and looked at him dazedly: “What’s the matter?”

Tang Xuhai covered his mouth and shook his head, his shoulders trembling with laughter.

“Why are you laughing?!” Fu Shiwu glared at him unhappily, but without the blessing of his glasses, his gaze just made people want to bully him.

Tang Xuhai laughed even harder.

Fu Shiwu narrowed his eyes, put on his glasses, folded his arms and said: “I think you haven’t recovered fully today. Let’s wait two more days until you can smoke.”

Tang Xuhai couldn’t laugh anymore. This threat was too powerful!

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh at you.” Tang Xuhai said with a serious expression: “It’s just that your current image makes it unbearable to not laugh.”

He really wants to be beaten up! Fu Shiwu thought unhappily, What could be so funny?

“What is that amuses you so much? Am I that entertaining?” Fu Shiwu ground his teeth: “Tell me, I’ll make sure to change! Say it!”

“Cough cough.” Tang Xuhai cleared his throat: “I think that considering the current circumstance of the world, you should cut your hair short.”

His words were ambiguous but Fu Shiwu understood at once. “Swoosh.” He reached out one hand to touch his hair, and sure enough, a lump of hair at the top of his head was proudly poking upward.

Fu Shiwu’s face turned scarlet with embarrassment.

This was a fatal blow to Fu Shiwu, who always paid special attention to his image.

His hair must be diligently washed, otherwise it would become this unruly state. Fu Shiwu had actually considered keeping one-inch-long short hair, but it didn’t match his image and made him look so dumb, like a nerd who forever buried his face in the school library.

But in this bomb shelter, all water was reserved for drinking and cooking, so where could he get any extra to wash his hair? The blame was on him for having a hair whorl right at the top; every time he slept, it would definitely poke out!

Fu Shiwu felt immensely distressed.

Seeing Fu Shiwu so frustrated that a gloomy aura was exuding from his whole body, Tang Xuhai reflected that the joke might have been overdone and hurriedly said: “You can flatten it with some water, it won’t poke out that much anymore.”

Fu Shiwu raised his head and firmly refused: “I can’t! Water is too precious now, how can I use it to wash my hair?!”

Tang Xuhai said: “Don’t worry, I feel absolutely okay, I should’ve completely recovered by now. I’ll go out during the day and get some water back. You can rest assured and just use it. “

Fu Shiwu didn’t believe these words that only came from Tang Xuhai’s assumption and sternly stuffed the thermometer into his hand.

Seeing that he was in a bad mood, Tang Xuhai sheepishly took the thermometer and put it in his armpit. Fu Shiwu got up and turned on the light, then walked over to examine Wen Zhaoming.

He frowned and said worriedly: “Wen Zhaoming is not awake, his body is still so hot. If we base on your experience, he should’ve been okay by now.”

Tang Xuhai pursed his lips: “You can’t compare him with me. I have an inflammation of an old injury, he has a cold. How can it be the same? Besides, look at my physique and look at his. It’s expected that his fever won’t reduce so fast.”

Fu Shiwu turned back to stare at Tang Xuhai’s muscular chest, envy once again bubbling in his heart.

He sighed: “Probably, but even so, we can’t just leave him with such a high fever. A prolonged high fever might burn his brain.”

Tang Xuhai frowned, stood up and sat down next to Fu Shiwu. Wen Zhaoming’s face was very pale, sweat was relentlessly pouring out and he was breathing heavily.

“His breathing still seems okay at least, there should be no major issue for the time being.” Tang Xuhai carefully pondered a few things and said: “Now it’s impossible to get any proper treatment. We can only keep on infusing him with normal saline and wait for the temperature to go down.”

He stood up and Fu Shiwu looked up.

Tang Xuhai said: “I must go out today. One of the three jugs of water is already empty. I will find some water and we can use it to cool him down.”

Fu Shiwu looked down at the unconscious Wen Zhaoming: “We can try that.”

Fu Shiwu actually had been thinking about going out again by himself, but Tang Xuhai, who confirmed that his temperature had returned to normal, suppressed Fu Shiwu with an unwavering attitude and even challenged the brat to a combat. Fu Shiwu had to succumb to his ‘superiority’, and the end result was determined: Tang Xuhai, the attack, would go out while Fu Shiwu, the defence, would guard the bomb shelter.

Tang Xuhai chewed on some rations, gulped down some water and triumphantly headed out with the combat knife by his side.

Although it had only been three days since he last saw the sun, Tang Xuhai was almost suffocated by the sight.

He blocked the door with the SUV, moved his body lightly, raised his arms and swung his legs a bit.

Tang Xuhai stared at his right leg. It wasn’t an illusion. He felt absolutely nothing wrong with his leg.

This was impossible.

He had a comminuted fracture in his right leg. The broken shards were removed by surgery, then a steel plate was placed inside to accelerate the bones’ healing. To grow back bones was never an easy process.

Even though from outside, his calf looked nothing out of the ordinary, it couldn’t withstand intense movement. It hurt immensely just to get back to walking normally.

That thing was a steel plate, not his own bone. It was definitely no easy feat for the steel plate to get along harmoniously with all his muscles and nerves. For a while, the most frequent sensation he could feel was sheer pain.

Although this leg allowed him to take a break from his glorious career, Tang Xuhai didn’t want to be a cripple in the future. He still maintained his rigorous training, resulting in his leg going on strike from time to time.

But now this leg felt like how it was before the fracture. No, it felt better than that!

Tang Xuhai wanted to confirm whether this was real.

He lifted his leg and threw a roundhouse kick into the air.

“Whoosh—” A gust of wind blew as Tang Xuhai’s body slanted to one side, his leg raised high then stopped steadily mid-air.

This wasn’t an illusion. His leg had really been healed!!!
