Chapter 16

“!!!” Fu Shiwu’s eyes widened in horror.

He desperately resisted the urge to scream. This monster turned out to eat human brains! Human brains!!!

Revolting

He clapped his mouth tightly and didn’t dare to take another look. While the monster was focused on eating, he stealthily ran across the two buildings and quite literally flew to the Western Medicine clinic.

“Huff, huff —” Fu Shiwu clutched his chest, pressing down his heart that was beating madly and furiously gasping for air.

Waves of dizziness that were caused by too much mental trigger crashed on his head.

Stay calm! Stay calm!

Fu Shiwu forcefully bit his lower lip.

Tang Xuhai was still waiting for his help! He couldn’t make even a single mistake.

Fu Shiwu wiped the sweat on his forehead with his damp hand, took out the multi-purpose shovel from his backpack and followed Tang Xuhai’s way of using the jaws to clamp the anti-theft net outside the window of the Western Medicine clinic.

Luckily, a net made of wire mesh like this was thinner, which the jaws could work on. If it was the vertical bar type, he would have no method other than sawing if off.

Fu Shiwu gently exerted some force while holding his breath. The jaws made a soft noise and snapped off the wire at once.

Fu Shiwu paused and waited for a short moment. Certain that he heard no movement, he started cutting again.

He didn’t have the nerve to go back and look where the alien was now. Rather, he could only pray that the alien would chew slowly, and that it would be full with several corpses lying there.

Fu Shiwu’s movements were extremely light and swift, making sure that there was no unnecessary move. He cut out an opening that was just enough for one person to pass through.

He stretched his hands and pulled out the anti-theft net. The window wasn’t locked but simply closed, likely because the clinic had wanted to welcome some wind in this hot summer, which allowed him to simply slide it open.

Fu Shiwu threw the backpack inside and edged over the window sill to jump into the room, then he hurriedly closed the window.

There were a few beds in this room, so it was likely the venue for patients to receive fluid replacement. Fu Shiwu picked up the backpack and turned to the next room.

This outpatient clinic was rebuilt from a civilian house. Behind the iron door that faced the balcony was the consultation room, while the central hall between the two rooms was directly converted into a pharmacy.

Seeing the three shelves full of medicine, Fu Shiwu rushed over and started rummaging.

“Sodium chloride! That’s it!” Fu Shiwu directly looked for the large-volume bottles. Being the most commonly used replenishment fluid, it was natural that normal saline was readily available here.

There were both bags and bottles of normal saline in this Western Medicine clinic, and Fu Shiwu decided to grab the bags. Pulling open the drawer next to it, he found IV drips as well as disposable syringes still packed in plastic bags. He stuffed two large IV drip sets and a few syringes into his backpack, then, catching a glimpse of fever injections just nearby, he bagged one big box of them also.

Thereafter, Fu Shiwu took all the common medications, such as those used for the cold, inflammation, stomachache, diarrhea, high blood pressure, heart relief… together with sterile cotton balls, band-aids and even thermometers.

Only when he could no longer put more items inside that Fu Shiwu came to a stop. He reluctantly shot one last look at the medicine shelves and took his leave.

Fu Shiwu swept a glance across the outside as he approached the window. He hadn’t been in the clinic for more than five or six minutes. Thinking that the alien probably hadn’t finished eating, Fu Shiwu crawled out.

Looking back at the anti-theft net that now had a big hole, Fu Shiwu quietly apologised in his heart, but he had no means to restore it to its original state at the moment.

Kneeling down and sticking against the bottom of the wall, Fu Shiwu moved to the alley between the two buildings, cautiously poking one eye out to look at the creature.

The alien had finished sucking up all the brains and was sitting there, seemingly cleaning his mouthparts and getting sluggish after its ‘delicious’ meal.

Fu Shiwu cried inside, This is bad. The alien was directly facing here, so if he ran across this time, he would definitely be seen.

What should he do?

A drop of sweat ran down his forehead and the salty sweat hurt his eyes. Fu Shiwu blinked. He desperately forced his brain to think of an idea but nothing came out. How could he safely get past the alien and successfully run back?

The tremendous pressure made Fu Shiwu extremely uncomfortable. As the sun ascended higher and the air became hotter, every single nerve on Fu Shiwu became stiffer.

He had been out for an hour and Tang Xuhai was having a high fever. If he couldn’t go back, Tang Xuhai would die!

Fu Shiwu pulled tightly on the backpack, so much so that his hand hurt. This backpack was given to him by Tang Xuhai.

All of a sudden, Fu Shiwu calmed down. He mustn’t panic; if he panicked, Tang Xuhai wouldn’t even have a chance at surviving.

The only option he had now was to wait!

He must wait until the right time came. Only if he got out of this ordeal alive then Tang Xuhai could get out of his fever alive.

Fu Shiwu calmed down, trying to breathe slowly and steadily while preparing all the muscles on his body for battle. His heart relaxed and he was ready to take his chance any time now.

He pricked up both his ears. There was no need to look; just focus on listening to the sound coming from the creature.

The weather was awfully hot and the cicadas were chirping sparsely from the trees, sometimes softly and sometimes loudly. There was absolutely no wind. Fu Shiwu could hear the sharp, spiked jaws smashing against the smaller jaws inside the alien mouthparts, all of them scraping and rubbing against each other.

However implausible as it might seem, he could actually hear that sound, even though it was very subtle.

As Fu Shiwu was immersed in this mind-boggling discovery, all over his body, the sweat evaporated and no longer poured out. His body temperature stabilised, reaching a point that was neither too high nor too low.

At this moment, he suddenly heard a sound of someone running in, of shoe soles rubbing against the ground and of people arguing.

Someone is coming?!

As his heart almost jumped out of his throat, Fu Shiwu wanted to yell out to them that there was an alien here, but he couldn’t!

Immediately afterwards, as though proving that his reminder was unnecessary, a loud “vroom vroom” sound of a motorcycle suddenly echoed from a nearby house door. How could the alien not hear such a big movement?

“Hiss!!!” The alien let out a hoarse cry and ran out.

Now!!!

Fu Shiwu aggressively got into his starting position and ran across the two buildings. He charged at the fastest speed possible! The motorcycle sprang out and the loud buzzing sound of the huge engine completely buried his footsteps.

Fu Shiwu splinted, running past the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture clinic, past the whole building, then past the small restaurant at the gate of the residential area.

Behind him came an ear-splitting screech and a blasting cry. “Crash!” The motorcycle toppled over, followed by a scream that was muffled half way, then another high-pitched shriek.

The sound of the motorcycle sliding on the ground stopped as soon as the screams disappeared.

As the surrounding went back to dead silence, Fu Shiwu kept himself close to the wall of the restaurant outside the residential area. He was shaking all over and tears were streaming down his face.

I am so sorry! I am so sorry! I am so sorry!

Fu Shiwu silently muttered apologies inside because he could only helplessly watch them die. He felt guilty for taking advantage of that opportunity to escape.

Then he breathed out softly, lifted his glasses to wipe away the tears, and with the quickest steps, he quietly left the place.

Since the moment the incident took place, Fu Shiwu felt his erratic footsteps too difficult to lift up from the ground. Something heavy was pressing on his heart.

He must live! Never be eaten by those monsters!

With the experience, this time, Fu Shiwu paid special attention to the hidden corners, the spots that seemed to have some movements, as well as the places from up above.

He no longer paused every two steps he took. Rapidly, he followed along the wall to return to the Dongtian Theater.

Walking into the theater, unlike before, he no longer ignored the surroundings because of the excitement upon finding his target. After cautiously checking that there was no trace of aliens, he swiftly ran to the side of the SUV.

Fu Shiwu moved the car slightly to create a gap to enter, then pulled open the door and got back into the bomb shelter.

Hearing the faint sound of footsteps in the passage, Wen Zhaoming immediately looked over.

“Shiwu? Is that you?” He couldn’t help asking.

“It’s me!” Fu Shiwu appeared with a serious expression on his face. “I got the items!”

“Great!” Wen Zhaoming breathed a sigh of relief.

Fu Shiwu fiercely trotted to where Tang Xuhai was lying. He threw the backpack to the front and opened it up with a soft “woosh”, then neatly pulled out the thermometer. He bent over and put it into Tang Xuhai’s mouth.

Kneeling down by Tang Xuhai’s side, he took out all the medications one by one. With that straight face, that solemn express and those vicious eyes, Fu Shiwu seemed to command a very distinct aura around him.

Why does he seem a bit different after going out for only a short while? Wen Zhaoming frowned in his wheelchair.

Although Fu Shiwu did show a cold and stern temperament before, it was more like the air of a white-collar elite in the workplace, but now he somehow gives out a feeling of… holding other people’s life and death in his hands? Wen Zhaoming thought with uncertainty.

“Zhaoming?” Fu Shiwu turned around and threw a sharp gaze at Wen Zhaoming.

Wen Zhaoming straightened his back reflexively and responded nervously: “What’s wrong?”

Fu Shiwu stared at him for a while, then slowly asked: “Do you know how to give injection?”

Wen Zhaoming was stunned. His lips shuddered and he only dared to speak again after a while: “I’m sorry, I don’t…”

Fu Shiwu’s sharp eyes suddenly softened. His shoulders dropped in frustration and he changed from kneeling on one knee to sitting on both knees: “What should we do? I don’t either.”

The aura that surrounded him just a second ago had suddenly disappeared. Wen Zhaoming let out a sigh of relief.

Now Fu Shiwu had changed back to his original form.
