Chapter 10

“About this ET.” An expert said, quoting the person in the video. “Since its head is so big, it should have a certain amount of IQ and be able to communicate! After so long, we’ve finally discovered aliens today. Humans are not alone in this universe!”

“Isn’t this an alien?! ET is a creature from outer space that is friendly to humans! This creature attacks humans as soon as it lands and has a very strong tendency to attack!” The other expert obviously was opposed to the former expert’s delight.

The TV then showed a video taken with a mobile phone by the trembling hands of an unknown man. The two ‘experts’ completely put the host to one side and continued their debate on whether the creature was an ‘ET’ or an ‘alien’.

The host stared blankly at the video that was uploaded very recently, and even the director’s voice ringing in the earphone couldn’t call his scared soul back.

The video was now at the scene where the creature pounced on the second person and bit off his head. The owner of the phone was finally shocked to the core, then the screen was moved away and quickly retreated.

The director’s voice in the earphone kept reminding him to come back to his senses and continue to host the show. The host looked at the two ‘experts’ who were still at heads with each other in an attempt to accurately name the creature, and he strongly suspected whether these two graduated from Film-making majors.

Is this the time to debate that? Does it make any sense?!

It was obvious that this monster, which looked like a chopstick with a potato inserted on top, carried no good intentions towards humans.

The chopsticks in Fu Shiwu’s hand had dropped but he totally wasn’t aware. He watched the scene that had to be played a second time because the host had had his soul scared stiff, and the horror of it made goose bumps pop up all over his body.

Will this ever end? Will this ever leave us any chance to live?

The red clouds disappeared for just one day and had made a comeback, this time with unknown creatures coming along.

This monster looked terrifying, but what Fu Shiwu was more anxious about was the unfolding red shroud that had casted all over the city and the pollution of the atmosphere that had increased by hundreds or thousands folds. Previously, they could resist the outbreak from infecting further, but now, how long more could they hold up?

Fu Shiwu didn’t sleep all night. The next day, as though responding to all his worries and speculations, a new round of disease broke out.

The infected ones still had high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, and the worst thing was, no effective vaccine had been developed until this point. Only antibiotics could seem to make the patients last longer, but they still couldn’t completely cure the disease.

The community where Fu Shiwu lived was not spared, but fortunately, because of the new wave of outbreak, their unlucky building whose entrance was blocked was finally taken care of.

Wang Ziping’s efforts turned out to be fruitful. After several attempts to contact the authorities, someone finally came to clean up the dead bodies that had rotten till an unbearable state.

The new peak of the outbreak would put people’s immunity to the test, and these dead bodies would bring on even more diseases.

Wang Ziping, who had naturally become the representative of this building, approached the dead body collector who was stringently clad in protective clothes.

“Which department do you belong to? Thank you so much. These corpses have caused a lot of trouble in our building. The weather is very hot these days so the rotting happens fast and the smell is unpleasant. It’s such a hot day and you still have to wear such thick clothes, it’s really hard work.” Wang Ziping looked at the man who was covered up from head to toes. It was impossible to pass him a cigarette, so Wang Ziping could only keep blabbering words of gratitude.

It was also thanks to this occasion that the elevator restrictions had finally been lifted from the basement. If it weren’t for this, they would have to climb and use ropes to lift the body down.

“We’re from the army. Now the situation in the city is very tense and there’s a serious shortage of manpower, so the government has sought help from the military. Our platoon just recently arrived in Yun City. ” This lieutenant might have gone through very strict training, but upon seeing the scene on the 20th floor, he couldn’t help but tell Wang Ziping: “So many people died in this building, and such tragic deaths!”

Because the condition developed very quickly after the onset and there was no cure, ‘dead’ seemed to be the only outcome. The hospitals simply couldn’t accommodate so many patients, so some people even perished outside or inside their own home. The situation had developed to the point that if someone next to you died from the disease within the house, just call the 24-hour hotline and the government would turn up at your door to pull the body away.

Because there were too many dead people, the only choice was to call upon the army to set up a specialised unit to take care of this.

The crematorium was working 24 hours a day at the moment, burning one furnace after another. Considering the circumstance, those who had lost their loved ones couldn’t even take back the ashes.

What happened here in Heavenly Gardens was too special. Because the entrance and exit were blocked, chaos bred from within and caused serious casualties. The person who ordered the blocking of the building was dismissed on the spot and held accountable. Unfortunately, the doors and windows were blocked with a type of special material that could only be removed with professional tools. No one had the capacity to remove it for now, so the residents could only get in and out through the elevator in the underground garage.

Wang Ziping had called the police several times before but couldn’t get through. Eventually, he went directly to the police station. As of this moment, an incident like this was too trivial for the police to put efforts into, so they could only record it first, then wait for investigation and processing later. Regarding what to do with those who were unfortunately killed, a police officer was squeezed out from the already-very-tense police force, who then could only take pictures and do nothing else.

“Aiya~~~ We have such bad luck. There is a mentally deranged person in the building, then there are also several other psychopaths…” Wang Ziping said sobbingly.

The lieutenant had taken a keen interest in this matter, so Wang Ziping kept talking to him. Meanwhile, more than fifty bodies were put into black body bags, and soldiers in protective clothes threw the bodies directly onto the truck.

“Okay, it’s all cleaned up.” After chatting with Wang Ziping for a long time, the lieutenant kindly said to him: “It’s not enough to just remove the bodies, a thorough disinfection needs to be done. You can do it yourself.”

“No problem, we know. Every household should have some disinfectant, else we will go out and buy.” Wang Ziping bid farewell to the lieutenant, gratitude laced in his tone.

He thanked the lieutenant for many reasons. The other man had not only taken away the corpses, but also tipped him with some information.

The army was on the hunt for those monsters, and unarmed citizens shouldn’t head out and just stay in their own homes. They believed that it wouldn’t take long until these creatures were completely eliminated.

By this point, people hadn’t known much about the power of these monsters, but because the impression they had left so far was too revolting and horrifying, people had decided to just call them aliens.

Wang Ziping went from house to house to collect disinfectant, and Fu Shiwu joined the volunteer group. Together with a few other people, he put on a mask and disinfected the 20th floor.

As he finished this labourious work, Fu Shiwu’s arms were so sore that he couldn’t even raise them. He had stayed up all night then worked till noon, so he couldn’t stand the exhaustion any further and fell asleep on the sofa.

After he dozed off for some time, the doorbell woke him up.

Fu Shiwu rubbed his eyes, grabbed his glasses and put them on.

“What’s the matter? Have you used up all the water in your place?” Fu Shiwu said as he opened the door and found Tang Xuhai.

“Almost, but I’m not looking for you for that matter.” Tang Xuhai pushed him against the door without another word.

“What are you doing?” Fu Shiwu couldn’t quite comprehend what was going on.

“We’d better leave this building.” Tang Xuhai said.

“Why?” Fu Shiwu became even more puzzled.

Tang Xuhai looked at the sleep marks on his face for a second and patiently explained to him: “The army’s operation has failed and the casualties are not small. Now they are retreating towards the central warehouse in the eastern suburbs. If you don’t want to die without even knowing why, do as I say!”

Fu Shiwu was stunned, no words able to come out.

In the afternoon, while he was working and sleeping, the troops on the siege were attacked by those aliens. These creatures moved extremely quickly and in large numbers. Although the troops had strong firepower, the aliens just seemed to constantly charge towards them. The expert who said that these aliens had IQ was actually correct. There were even aliens who specifically sacrificed themselves to block the guns and create opportunities for their teammates.

In the end, both sides lost the battle and suffered heavy damages. The troops had insufficient ammunition and had to retreat.

“Then where are we going?” Fu Shiwu said with fear.

“We don’t have weapons. It’s best to go to the central warehouse in the eastern suburbs to join the army.” Tang Xuhai raised his hand and threw a tactical backpack to Fu Shiwu: “Bring something to eat and your box of chocolates. The rest is up to you. “

“Do we leave now? So fast?” Fu Shiwu held the backpack with widened, round eyes, but through the lens, they transformed into exquisitely sharp eyes.

Tang Xuhai was almost lost for words, then he said impatiently: “The red shroud that carries those aliens is not yet above us, so the number of aliens in the city is the least at the moment. When the shroud moves in the evening, will you still be able to run away?! You idiot!”

Why did he scold me? Fu Shiwu felt both wronged and lost at the same time.

Tang Xuhai slammed the door and walked back to his apartment angrily. How could that brat still blabber nonsense at this moment? He even dared to stare at me with those eyes.

Had it not been for the ride and the few jugs of water yesterday, Tang Xuhai wouldn’t have been so kind to call him!

Tang Xuhai returned to his home, walked into the bedroom and opened the cabinet door. Inside was a combat knife that he thought could only be reduced to a collectible, which was gifted to him by his comrade upon his retirement.

According to the rules of retirement, of course he wasn’t allowed to carry weapons and equipment anymore. His comrade-in-arms had to go through many troubles to give him this.

He put on clothes that were easy to move in and placed the knife into the tactical belt fixed on his right leg.

Tang Xuhai opened the backpack and stuffed all the things he had prepared inside. Having conducted frequent field operations in the past, of course he knew what to take. Although what he had on hands now wasn’t as good as military equipment, it was better than nothing.

Fu Shiwu was at a loss for a moment, then he hurried to pack his things.

The backpack Tang Xuhai gave him might seem nothing out of the ordinary, but it could hold a lot of things. That said, after considering his physical strength, Fu Shiwu decided that he should carefully choose what he wanted to bring.

First of all, Tang Xuhai asked him to bring his box of milk chocolates. In the situation that he became physically exhausted, this would be a good nutritious supplement, while other snacks would have no values. Fu Shiwu then simply filled his backpack with dried vegetables bars and dried noodles!

Thereafter, he ran into the study, took out the portable hard drive, wrapped it in clothes and placed it into the backpack.
