Chapter 35

Fu Shiwu also woke up a second later. Not speaking a word, he quietly opened his eyes and looked at the light of Tang Xuhai’s watch.

Sometimes they both woke up at night but neither said anything, just waiting for the commotion to be over before falling asleep again.

It was just that between suddenly waking up and falling asleep again, Tang Xuhai had it much easier than Fu Shiwu. Fu Shiwu usually waited until he was sure that the alien had been killed before being able to get back to his sleep. He didn’t have Tang Xuhai’s ability to sleep within seconds, and sometimes he would even flip around awake till morning.

This time, both were awake and listening intensely to the noise outside.

All of a sudden, Tang Xuhai sat up. Fu Shiwu was taken back: “What’s wrong?”

Wen Zhaoming also immediately woke up, then he asked softly: “What happened?”

Tang Xuhai put on his tactical boots, grabbed the weapon belt, inserted his knife and picked up his Duo Dragonbone Swords.

He said briefly: “I think the aliens may attack the warehouse gate tonight! You two stay safe, I’ll go out and have a look.”

As the words fell, he ran out.

His voice wasn’t low, immediately waking up the people around, and the sounds of uneasy muttering soon rippled throughout the entire warehouse.

Wen Zhaoming turned on the flashlight and said to Fu Shiwu: “Let’s make some preparations too.”

“Uhm!” Fu Shiwu nodded.

Ever since Tang Xuhai talked about the evolution of aliens, Wen Zhaoming had been analysing the state of this central warehouse and come to the conclusion that sooner or later, the survivors in this place would attract those aliens that had evolved.

But, even he didn’t expect that the day would come so fast!

Fu Shiwu put on the brown tactical boots that Tang Xuhai gave him, loaded the pistol and released the safety catch. Wen Zhaoming put on his prosthesis, climbed into the wheelchair and flipped the switch.

The moment they finished all this, all the lights on the warehouse ceiling were suddenly turned on.

Wen Zhaoming tensed up: “Damn, the lighting will likely attract the aliens.”

Fu Shiwu was stunned and he quickly stood up: “What should I do? Should I turn off the lights?”

“No, don’t do it.” Wen Zhaoming shook his head: “People are freaking out at this moment. If you say such a thing, no one will listen to you. Now they only think that the aliens couldn’t be seen without the lights, and nothing is more terrifying than fear of the unknown .”

Fu Shiwu thought for a moment and said decisively: “Then we’ll go out too!”

Wen Zhaoming was shocked, but after thinking about it, he agreed that going out was the most favourable choice for them.

Once the aliens broke into the central warehouse, they might have to fight. His fire ability was likely no more useful than Fu Shiwu’s marksmanship, and they might accidentally suffer injuries at any point now. Moreover, there were too many people in this warehouse; with everyone pushing and trembling under panic, both of them might get hurt.

“Okay, let’s go out.” Wen Zhaoming nodded.

Since this wasn’t the time to pardon Wen Zhaoming’s feelings about his disability, Fu Shiwu directly pushed the wheelchair and walked out of their barricaded room.

Seeing them moving, the people around who knew of Wen Zhaoming’s ability asked anxiously: “What are you two doing? What’s happening outside?”

“We’ll take a look outside. It’s possible that an alien is attacking the gate.” Fu Shiwu said as he hurriedly pushed Wen Zhaoming’s wheelchair forward.

“Hey! You can’t go out!!” A man shouted in horror.

Fu Shiwu was almost feeling touched, but the man continued yelling: “If you’re not here, what do we do?!”

“Yes! That man is an ability user!” Someone else reacted.

These people didn’t think about Wen Zhaoming and Fu Shiwu’s safety at all, rather, they were only worried that if an alien would really turn up, without Wen Zhaoming’s fire ability, no one would protect them.

Fu Shiwu was frustrated. This was the first time he had seen such shameless people.

Why would Wen Zhaoming have to protect these people? Under what obligation did he have to do so?!

Fu Shiwu was very angry, but his communication skill was limited and his special ‘threatening aura’ was greyed out and unavailable for use at the moment. Even if he wanted to scold them aloud for being so shameless, he couldn’t let out a word.

Wen Zhaoming’s wheelchair suddenly shot to the front then turned around. He cast a sharp glance at the people who stood up after hearing the man’s shouts.

“Huff, huff, huff —” Several large fireballs appeared out of thin air and circled slowly beside him.

The people were shaken to the core.

Wen Zhaoming’s gaze stayed fixed on those people as he said coldly: “Are you going to stop me then?”

The man who shouted earlier completely shut up.

Wen Zhaoming gave one last fierce look at those people and turned his wheelchair around, then he rushed towards the warehouse door: “Shiwu, let’s go!”

The fireballs remained in their original place.

“I’m coming!” Fu Shiwu pushed his glasses up and glanced coldly at those people before quickly catching up with Wen Zhaoming.

Walking out of the warehouse, he looked at Wen Zhaoming, who was waiting for him at a spot outside the reach of the warehouse’s light, and said excitedly: “Zhaoming! You were amazing just now!”

Wen Zhaoming: “…”

To have such a remarkable teammate, Fu Shiwu was truly proud.

I’m nowhere as scary as you, don’t you know? Wen Zhaoming gently slapped his forehead and said helplessly: “Let’s go over there.”

Fu Shiwu followed Wen Zhaoming and stood by the wall of the warehouse. Beside them was the light projected by the ceiling lights.

Fu Shiwu whispered to Wen Zhaoming: “Xuhai once said that the aliens’ five senses are similar to human beings’, so with such a strong contrast between light and darkness, it won’t see us so easily.”

Wen Zhaoming nodded: “A contrast effect under the lights.”

At the moment, Tang Xuhai was running to the main gate at lightning speed.

Because the gate here ran on electricity, unlike the surrounding walls, it was a blockage that wasn’t so easy to break down. Meanwhile, the walls had also been enhanced to improve their safeguard ability. They had been heightened and thickened with quick-drying cement, so the aliens wouldn’t be able to jump through unless they had a leverage. Those trees or buildings outside had all been demolished, while those that couldn’t be demolished would be guarded carefully.

Because the main gate was their vital entrance, most of the troops were arranged around here.

The aliens were similar to the Earth’s creatures in many ways, for example, they had five senses and followed a specific routine of work and rest.

They generally hunted during the day and rested at night.

Such a characteristic at least allowed humanity to have time to rest and do other things. It was good enough that they didn’t have to fight 24 hours a day.

The aliens weren’t usually active at night, except for those that had just landed onto the Earth. Thus, to have aliens attack the gate at night was strange!

By the time Tang Xuhai arrived, the two sides were fighting vigorously.

The heavy machine guns were spitting out chains of fire, intertwined with other heavy firepower to form a fire net, successively killing waves of aliens that were rushing towards the scene.

“What’s going on? How could the aliens act up at night?” Tang Xuhai walked to Captain Xing’s side.

“I don’t know.” Captain Xing said solemnly: “The aliens have been following a pattern, but there must be some reason that this pattern is broken today.”

“This weird phenomenon has happened once at the fortification in Yun City’s main road.” Recalling the time when they broke into the fortification, Tang Xuhai continued: “At that time, the aliens ambushed us by jumping from high-rise buildings.”

“But the central warehouse is entirely made up of single-floor buildings.” The captain glanced at him: “Those aliens can’t jump high without the help of external force.”

“No, the evolved ones can jump high.” Tang Xuhai glanced at the walls, thinking that the walls here were actually not as high as those of the power station inside the garment factory.

“Are you saying that this is an organised attack from those evolved aliens?” Captain Xing’s expression hardened.

“Very likely!” Tang Xuhai said decisively.

The army’s strategy team had also figured out what Tang Xuhai just said. The aliens were socially intelligent creatures. Although they generally seemed to act alone, in some cases, they would come together to fight in groups. And when such teaming-up happened, it was because they wanted to make a big move.

The aliens were smart in the first place, and now, after their evolution, they became even smarter. Then the smart ones would gather those that were not as smart, cooperating together to launch a massive attack!
