Chapter 31

Fu Shiwu felt a lump in his throat. How could he greet someone with a gun? He was neither a policeman nor a soldier, and if he did that they might even think he was a gangster.

That said, receiving these bullets was still a good thing.

Fu Shiwu withdrew to the corner, solemnly loading the bullets one by one into the empty magazine in his gun, then carefully stuffed the spare magazine and extra bullets into the backpack.

Looking at his serious movements, Tang Xuhai’s mouth curled up.

Inspired by the first day, every time Tang Xuhai went out, he wouldn’t go home empty-handed. From time to time, he would pack up some items that he found useful. Slowly, the rear compartment of their SUV parked inside the army’s parking lot was filled to the brim with all sorts of things.

Because they were running out of dried noodles, the emergency rations were still reserved for future use, just in case the worst scenario happened.

The government was in charge of distributing food to everyone. Every head received five steamed buns and some pickles every day. During the initial period, there were still cooking trucks from the military base to provide hot food, but later, as the supplies were gradually depleted and fuel needed to be controlled, even hot porridge was no longer available.

Fortunately, the large water purifying machines that they brought back were successfully installed. People could eat steamed buns and pickles while drinking clean water, so even though some of them still complained, everyone had just enough to last through the days.

But the three grown men couldn’t be okay with just that — especially Tang Xuhai. Luckily, Tang Xuhai finally learned to look inside cupboards of the roadside shops. These shops sometimes made their own ingredients and thus left behind rice, noodles and oil, which were all wiped clean by Tang Xuhai.

On that day, Tang Xuhai followed the special operations team out to search for supplies as usual.

A heavy machine gun was fixed on the roof of the military truck, with a soldier lying beside it.

The number of aliens had been increasing steadily, and since their prey couldn’t be found in the city anymore, these aliens had gathered together, directly trying to attack the central warehouse.

The team that went out to search for necessities was also facing more and more waves of aliens, so much so that they had to utilise the heavy machine gun to hold their ground.

The situation in the central warehouse was even more severe. It was simply unrealistic to rely on fewer than four hundred soldiers to protect tens of thousands of people. Fortunately, the first batch of patients with high fever had recovered thanks to the massive administering of antibiotics, and as expected, these people all developed special abilities. With the support of the soldiers, these new forces joined in the defence line.

It was just that their abilities had strengths and weaknesses, all of which were hugely different. Abilities belonging to electricity, fire, metal, wind or even super power types were powerful and remarkably fit for attack, while the remaining wood and water types weren’t so, for they couldn’t deal damage to the aliens. There were also special abilities that no one had yet known how to apply, so they could only learn on experience.

But abilities of wood and water types weren’t at all useless. Wood-type ability could promote the germination and growth of plant seeds, thus allowing people in the central warehouse to eat vegetables again, temporarily solving the food crisis. Meanwhile, water-type ability could provide pure water, thus with their contribution, people could properly take showers and wash their clothes.

There were those that were enthusiastic to help, yet also those that took advantage of the situation to rob off other people. But the ones who wanted to use their abilities to dominate others would have to face retribution from the army.

After all, they were still mortal and couldn’t survive against bullets.

Tang Xuhai didn’t sit in the truck, instead, he stood at the vehicle’s door, guarding the surroundings with the soldier lying on the roof.

Their purpose today was to go to a garment factory on the outskirts of Yun City. It wasn’t because they needed to get more clothes, but because they heard that this factory was built very early on and later added with its own power station during renovation. Their target was the diesel generators inside the power station.

With the end of the world, the city’s infrastructure was slowly being destroyed. The water, fortunately, hadn’t been affected because it stayed underground, but both electricity and communication networks had been cut off. Beside mobile phones being unavailable, electricity lines had been damaged, causing power shutdown at the central warehouse.

Without electricity, many of the army’s equipment could neither be used nor connect to the satellites, so there was no way to receive information in time.

They had been constantly chased by aliens during their journey to the garment factory. Amid the machine gun’s bullets and the soldiers’ strikes, through much hardship, they finally arrived at the destination.

This garment factory was a star enterprise in Yun City in its early years. Its size was enormous, with affiliated residential areas for the staff’s families and even schools for their children. Relying on the population that lived off this factory, the surroundings were constructed into a neighbourhood with very comprehensive living facilities.

But because of its self-sufficiency, this garment factory suffered heavy casualties following the disaster.

At first, the people here didn’t come to the realisation that they should try to escape on their own. By the time they wanted to flee, there was no one to lead them to get past the aliens. As a result, only a small number successfully ran away, while most were killed in the hands of those aliens.

When the special operations team arrived, the garment factory was full of corpses whose stench had horribly ruptured the air.

Tang Xuhai’s expression couldn’t help but twist a bit.

“Be careful. Let’s act fast and try to shorten our stay in this area as much as possible, to not catch any disease!” The captain sternly instructed the fifty or so members of the special operations team.

After that, he said to Tang Xuhai: “Xiao Tang, you shouldn’t go alone today. We’re uncertain of the situation here, it’s too risky.”

“Sure, Captain Xing.” Tang Xuhai nodded.

He had no heavy weapons in hands, only a pair of swords and a dagger.

He stood near the vehicle and watched the soldiers jump off the truck then trot toward the power station.

The garment factory was very quiet and only the orderly footsteps of the soldiers could be heard.

Tang Xuhai walked forward with a grim expression as the hair on the back of his neck all stood up. He had an ominous hunch.

This intuition of his, which had been honed through countless battles and many near-death experiences, was rarely wrong. Tang Xuhai believed in his hunch: This garment factory felt odd and definitely dangerous!

Tang Xuhai ran to the front in large strides and chased after the team.

“Captain Xing!”

The soldiers’ movements were extremely fast. They had entered the power station and dispersed into small groups, carrying various tools to start disassembling the diesel generators.

Captain Xing heard Tang Xuhai yell and turned around, about to ask what the matter was. At this moment, an alien flew out from the roof.

“Hiss!!!” The distinct cry of the alien’s torn vocal cords pierced everyone’s ears.

“An alien!!!”

The soldiers hurriedly picked up their weapons to shoot at the alien, but the creature instantly knocked off three soldiers.

This alien moved incredibly fast and could attack several people at the same time, having everyone caught off guard.

“Ahhhhh!!!” A soldier screamed as a large piece of flesh was torn off from his face and the whole tip of his nose disappeared, leaving only two bloody hollows behind.

Another was directly dragged to the ground with the alien’s tentacles wrapped around his neck, and the last one’s suffering was the scariest sight. The alien’s mouthparts opened, and the tube that was thought to be used to suck up its victim’s brain suddenly jumped out, nailing directly into the soldier’s forehead.

“Motherf**ker! Go to hell, f**king alien!!!” A soldier was so frightened that he started firing frantically with the semi-automatic rifle in his hands.

“Do not hit our own men!!!” Captain Xing roared: “Stay steady! Don’t crack up!!!”

Amid Captain Xing’s continuous, irate screams, the soldiers finally stabilised their positions and shot at the alien.

But this alien that had knocked out three men didn’t seem to want to fight any further. With a pair of legs that could jump as high as springs, the creature flew to the other direction.

Its shadow drew a neat arc in the air, smoothly dodging all the bullets.

A soldier pointed the muzzle at the alien and tried to adjust the angle, but before he could pull the trigger, a tentacle coiled around the muzzle, and with a flick, both the soldier and the gun was thrown to the side.

“Is this still the same f**king alien?!” Another soldier screamed in astonishment: “It’s evolved!!!”

Compared with other aliens, this alien was significantly faster and stronger, and it had also learned to attack with its tube.

Which completely dropped a bombshell on the unprepared soldiers.

“Move away!!!” Tang Xuhai rushed forward and jumped up, holding his duo swords in both hands and waving them at the alien.

The steel glowed with a brilliant silver light as the two blades slashed at the tentacles, but the alien shifted its body in a blink and thumped down along the edge of the blades.

That force almost caused Tang Xuhai to have to let go of his swords, then at this moment, the alien seized the opportunity to break open its mouthparts, its tube poking out!

As his expression tensed up, Tang Xuhai quickly moved his neck, and the tube flew over, scratching against his hair.

Retracting the tube, the alien swung one tentacle towards Tang Xuhai. Tang Xuhai raised his long leg and kicked at its upper arm, sending the tentacle flying back.

“Squeak!!!” The alien screamed excruciatingly, a hint of fury flashing in its eyes, and the tube from its mouthparts once again aimed at Tang Xuhai’s head.

“Sh*t!” Tang Xuhai cursed, but it was too late to let go of his leg. His other foot stomped heavily against the ground and his whole body flipped backwards!

The tube rubbed against Tang Xuhai’s body but didn’t pierce him.

“Hisssssss!!!” The alien shrieked in anger, relentlessly tossing both its tentacles towards Tang Xuhai.

If Tang Xuhai stopped now, he would likely be entangled by the alien’s tentacles. Considering the strength of this alien, being caught was very dangerous. This forced Tang Xuhai to keep flipping back and forth for more than a dozen times, like an acrobat from the circus.

“Tang Xuhai!” Captain Xing raised his semi-automatic rifle and shot at the alien’s back.

As a series of bullets flew out, as though growing eyes on its back, the alien immediately jumped away from the spot with its spring-like legs.

Tang Xuhai finally got a chance to breathe. He supported one hand on the ground and steadily stood up on both feet.

“Damn!!!” A fierce light flashed in Tang Xuhai’s eyes as he rubbed his tactical boots heavily against the ground, running to pick up his duo swords that had been dropped due to the continuous backflips.

The alien continued charging at the soldiers. Tang Xuhai felt his rage explode as the alien just tossed him aside and obviously didn’t bother about him at all.

Fun fact; Even back in the 1990s, (in the west and likely in Asia too according to documents) majority of military equipment was actually non-electrical and instead ran off (glorified) batteries.
